Abstract

Today, multilingualism is extremely common. In the Indonesian context, it has its own phenomenon in which the Indonesian and English languages coexisted and frequently earned special emphasis among the mother tongues of each region. Surprisingly, multilingualism has been practiced in pesantren for a long time, with Arabic becoming the primary choice alongside Indonesian and regional languages. Now, Pesantrens are currently developing and adding more languages as learning targets, including English. However, according to the authors’ preliminary research at several renowned pesantren, English has not yet surpassed Arabic in terms of its practice in their daily usage. In fact, pesantren is an ideal setting for language environmental conditioning using the Multilingual Education technique. The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of the language imbalance as viewed through the students' perspectives and how they influence the students’ language behavior. The authors utilized a descriptive qualitative method to analyze data gathered from interviews with 40 grade X-XII students at two Pesantrens in Central Java and Yogyakarta. The recorded data was then analyzed using framework analysis method. The results showed 5 main factors from the case: 1) students’ anxiety, 2) lack of language exposure, 3) unsupporting language environment, 4) students’ religious identity, and 5) students’ future needs. There were also different perceptions between Arabic as a language for studying religion and worship, while English only means for communication and preparation to advanced study. These findings also concluded that these perceptions influence their imbalance in multilingualism practices.

Abstract

This study applied experimental research with a quantitative approach to investigate the effectiveness of graphic organizer (GO) to enhance reading comprehension of EFL learners with good and poor reading habits. The study involved EFL learners from Duta Bangsa University in Indonesia. The samples were taken from two classes, the first was control group and the second was experimental group. Data collection in this study was conducted by using tests (including pre-tests and post-tests). The analysis of statistics was aimed to determine the mean, frequency, total score, standard deviation, and percentage. The pre-test values for the experimental group with good reading habits and poor reading habits were 55.17 and 43.41 respectively, while the post-test values for the experimental group with good reading habit were 79.88 and 61.23 for the poor reading habit. The average scores revealed that the experimental group, taught by using the GO strategy, outperformed the control group which received conventional way. Thus, it could be concluded that the GOs strategy significantly improved students' reading comprehension. This was evidenced by the experimental group's average score of 75.64 compared to the control group's average score of 62.44. The mean value of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, and the t-test value was 4.241, with a 2-tailed significance of 0.001. This suggests that the GO strategy can be effectively integrated into teaching reading instruction of EFL learners to accelerate their reading comprehension.

Abstract

English is mostly used by people throughout the world because of its role as an international language. This situation makes many non-English language speaking countries apply English Language Teaching (ELT). The existence of Native English-Speaking Teacher (NEST) then becomes an alternative way to create better atmosphere in language teaching. This research revealed how actually the students’ perceptions toward the existence of NEST in ELT at the school. As the descriptive quantitative research, this research used questionnaire as the main instrument and interview as the supplemental instrument. The subjects of this study were the eleventh-grade students from a public vocational school. The students’ perceptions in this research were classified into 3 aspects. They were students’ perceptions toward NEST’s teaching, NEST’s strengths and weaknesses, and NEST’s behaviour. The research found that they perceived the NEST’s teaching was not understandable but they still could follow his explanation in some particular points. The students also perceived that the NEST was good in developing positive attitudes through his teaching, his confidence in using English, and his original accent. In another hand he was not really good in understanding the students’ culture and he could not use the students’ first language. Finally, they perceived that the NEST was a disciplinarian and strict teacher. However, he was perceived as a friendly and humorous person who totally used English in the class. and used various teaching materials.

Abstract

The National Examination (NE) is abolished in 2021, marking the beginning of a new educational evaluation paradigm in Indonesia. The regulation considers some reasons: the suitability of the test, the development of teaching methods, and the enhancement of the quality of national education. Under the abolition of NE, the regulation constitutes the establishment of School-Based Assessment (SBA), conducted by the teachers in the forms of portfolios, assignments, tests, and/or other assessments following the regulation from each school. Therefore, the present research aims at investigating English teachers' perception towards the abolition of NE and the washback of the abolition of NE on the teaching plan of English language learning in the aspect of classroom instructional behaviours and the content of the curriculum. The sequential mixed-methods research (MMR) works with quantitative and qualitative data from 51 respondents in an online questionnaire and four teachers participated in a semi-structured interview. It was then found that the establishment of SBA replacing NE obtains positive responses from the teachers as it is perceived more reliable with objectives of the English curriculum, which attempts to elevate students' high order thinking skills. The abolition of NE triggers the teachers to vary their teaching methods and techniques by using more communicative approaches; however, the change in assessment does not influence teachers' domination in classroom activities and talking activity. The teachers highly emphasize the use of previous exam papers in the preparation of SBA. In addition, the teachers remain highly prioritizing students' success in SBA, which retains exam papers, as the level of students' language proficiency is relatively low. Referring to the findings, the related parties can measure the washback of the abolition of NE for further improvement in the language assessment.

Abstract

This article presents an assessment of the implementation of flipped classrooms and the use of Edpuzzle for this purpose. Four elementary schools engaging in the School Transformation Programme 2025 (TS25) across various subject areas were included in the study. As part of this programme, teachers received training in pedagogical and technological knowledge. A mixed-methods design was employed to collect and analyse both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings indicate that teachers demonstrated a strong understanding of the pupil-centred concept in the flipped classroom model. However, while teachers universally used Edpuzzle for pre-class activities, there is a need for them to fully leverage its features and enhance creativity to develop more engaging video quizzes.

Abstract

The growth of English language learning in Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) leads to a challenge as the subject contains the culture of target language. Integrating English language instruction into traditional Pesantren education requires a comprehensive understanding to avoid conflicts with religious values and traditional pedagogical methods. There are cultural constraints as human relationships in Pesantren based on social hierarchies which embed the philosophy of “total obedience” affecting the students who tend to be less engaged with the material and less motivated to express their thought. Therefore, this paper explains teaching culture at English language learning in Pesantren in Indonesia. This conceptual paper aims at designing the material and teaching plan of English learning for the students at the age of the first year of secondary school. They share the same culture as the Javanese ethnic group, with the same local and national language. Their level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is A2 - Elementary English as they have been learning English since the late year of primary schools. The sequence of tasks in cultural teaching in English language teaching comprises of four stages; preparation, collection, implementation and reflection stage.
