Abstract

Thermal comfort in Indonesian housing is increasingly challenged by hot-humid climates, urban densification, material changes, and rising cooling demand. This study employed a narrative literature review with thematic synthesis. Literature was identified through a Scopus search conducted on 10 May 2026 using thermal-comfort and vernacular-architecture keywords, then supplemented by Indonesian case studies, classic comfort theories, thermal-comfort standards, and policy reports. The selected sources were screened based on relevance to thermal comfort, vernacular or naturally ventilated dwellings, and architectural design, and were appraised according to evidence type, including field measurements, occupant surveys, simulations, reviews, and architectural interpretations. A total of 45 cited sources formed the basis of the thematic synthesis. The review finds that Indonesian vernacular houses do not provide automatic comfort; their performance depends on climate exposure, material integrity, ventilation potential, roof design, shaded transition spaces, and occupant control. Evidence from Acehnese, Banjar, Minangkabau, Bugis, Javanese, Balinese, Palembang, and East Nusa Tenggara houses indicates recurring mechanisms: raised floors, ventilated roof voids, porous but shaded envelopes, semi-outdoor spaces, and climate-specific materials. The article proposes a performance-based translation framework for contemporary low-energy housing. Vernacular principles are most useful when evaluated through measured air movement, radiant heat, humidity, occupant votes, and future climate resilience.

Abstract

The construction industry contributes significantly to global carbon emissions and environmental degradation, creating increasing demand for sustainable building materials. This research aims to formulate a green strategy for enhancing the value of shell brick as an environmentally friendly building material within the perspective of sustainable architecture and circular economy principles. The study uses a qualitative case study approach through SWOT analysis integrated with Olson’s Green Strategy framework. Primary data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation studies involving shell brick industries in Dumai City, Indonesia. The results identify seven strategic dimensions requiring development, namely raw material management, production techniques, processing technology, distribution systems, marketing strategies, institutional development, and architectural applications. The findings indicate that shell brick has strong potential as a sustainable architectural material due to its utilization of palm oil industrial waste through reuse, reduce, and recycle principles. The study also demonstrates that shell brick supports green building concepts through reduced embodied carbon potential, local resource utilization, and environmentally responsive architectural applications. This research contributes to the development of sustainable construction materials and green architecture practices in tropical regions.

Abstract

The Wuring coastal settlement in Maumere City is inhabited by the Bajo community, characterized by traditional wooden stilt houses built over the sea and connected by plank and bamboo walkways, as well as several houses on land with concrete foundations and brick walls. However, increasingly complex environmental conditions and inadequate sanitation facilities have degraded the quality of the settlement. Frequently observed issues include the accumulation of plastic waste, household waste and sewage on the seabed during low tide. This research aims to examine the application of the healthy house concept based on Bajo local wisdom in the Wuring coastal area. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, utilizing comparative and empirical analysis through field observations, interviews and literature studies. The results indicate that aspects of Bajo local wisdom can be integrated with healthy house standards in spatial planning, facade openings, sanitation management and waste systems. The implementation of a healthy stilt house concept rooted in local wisdom can enhance the quality of the housing environment while preserving the cultural identity of the Bajo people.

Abstract

Public open spaces (POS) play a critical role in supporting the social, ecological, and economic sustainability of urban areas. However, their functions are often compromised by criminal activities and inadequate safety provisions. This study evaluates the management of Baturaja City Park, a public open space in Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, South Sumatera, Indonesia, using the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) framework. Employing a mixed-method approach combining qualitative field observation, structured expert questionnaires, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for variable weighting, and SWOT matrix analysis for strategic evaluation the research systematically assessed biophysical, utility, activity, security, and management aspects of the park. Field observations were conducted over seven days (4–10 August 2025). Three expert respondents from the Local Housing and Settlement Office (Dinas PERKIM OKU) provided weighted assessments. Results reveal significant deficiencies in natural surveillance due to non-functional lighting systems, absence of CCTV, inadequate security personnel, limited evacuation routes, and overgrown vegetation obstructing sightlines. The SWOT-AHP analysis positioned the park in Quadrant I (Growth Strategy), with internal strength score (S=1.23) marginally exceeding weakness (W=1.21) and opportunity (O=1.36) surpassing threat (T=0.95). The study produced comprehensive design and management recommendations aligned with four CPTED principles: natural surveillance, territorial reinforcement, natural access control, and maintenance/management. Key recommendations include installation of 92 surveillance cameras (including smart CCTV), 396 lighting units across three typologies, redesign of access points, vegetation management, and digital maintenance reporting systems.

Abstract

Solar panel technology is expected to mitigate the impact of global warming with the use of Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) that incorporates solar panels into buildings. However, the application of BIPV still has limitations in architectural design, especially for  housing in Yogyakarta. This study uses a quantitative approach with a design-based simulation method through exploration of the best roof shape for BIPV type-72 houses in Yogyakarta. This study aims to identify the most optimal roof shape of type-72 houses in utilizing solar energy potential through the application of the BIPV system in residential areas in Yogyakarta. Through a quantitative design-based simulation approach, 72 combinations of roof models integrated with variations in orientation, plot shape, and floor plan shape are analyzed to measure the estimated annual energy production per installed PV area (kWh/m²/year). On average, the gable roof shape has the highest value in the application of BIPV on the roof for each orientation scenario, plot shape and floor plan shape. While the most optimal design per scenario is a sloping roof shape facing north, a 10m x 12m plot shape, and a single building mass floor plan with a garden in the middle. The optimal condition is obtained by combining all scenarios which gives 10.4% better performance compared to the average of all simulation results.

Abstract

Social-community integration is an important aspect in the development of Nature-Based Schools as an educational model that emphasizes interaction with nature and social collaboration. This study aims to analyze the role of architecture in promoting social-community integration in Sekolah Alam through a literature review. The method used is a systematic literature review of various sources discussing the concepts of educational architecture, social spaces, and Sekolah Alam. The findings indicate that architectural designs that accommodate open spaces, flexible circulation, and the use of natural materials can enhance social interaction and strengthen the sense of togetherness among school community members. In addition, the application of inclusive and multifunctional design principles also contributes to the creation of a supportive and harmonious learning environment. In conclusion, architecture plays a strategic role in building social-community integration in Alam Schools , and thus should be a key consideration in the planning and development of sustainable nature-based schools. This study provides a scientific basis for the design of educational spaces that optimize social interaction and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Modern heritage is understood as a legacy of the past that embodies ways of thinking adapted to contemporary demands. It represents a new type of architecture that emerged between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, encompassing architecture, urban planning, and landscape design, and is characterized by new modes of thought in which past and future converge, enabling collaboration between designers and conservators. Modern architecture constitutes a new symbolic form that directly expresses contemporary reality rather than continuously reproducing historical references. The characteristics and paradigms developed during the modern period have become an important part of global architectural development, contributing new knowledge and perspectives that give rise to what is referred to as new form architecture. This study aims to provide a new theoretical contribution to the concept of new form architecture within modern heritage, using a qualitative approach with descriptive content analysis. The findings show that modern heritage produces new form architecture derived from nineteenth-century modernism, introducing new building typologies as a result of the Industrial Revolution, which generated new technologies to support nineteenth-century societal activities. The emergence of these typologies is closely related to industrial developments in transportation, industry, and construction materials.
