Abstract

The existence of Kalipasir Mosque as a Cultural Heritage building is one of the character-defining elements of the Pasar Lama Cultural Heritage area in Tangerang, Banten. Currently, Kalipasir Mosque is situated in the middle of a densely populated settlement and has become one of the tourist destinations in the Pasar Lama area. A prominent characteristic of the settlement's growth around the mosque is the large number of migrants who have moved and settled there, primarily due to the convenient and easy access to Tangerang city center. This phenomenon leads to a research question: Can the Kalipasir Mosque building sustain itself as a cultural heritage site amidst the changing characteristics of its surrounding settlements? A descriptive-analytical research method is employed to examine the place-making that occurs in the spaces around the mosque, shaped by the activities carried out by residents living in the adjacent settlement. Data exploration was conducted through interviews and data collection via questionnaires distributed to residents and worshippers around the mosque. The results of this research show that place identity plays a crucial role in the resilience of Kalipasir Mosque as a Cultural Heritage building. This place identity is shaped by several factors: the designation of Kalipasir Mosque as a Cultural Heritage building, the occurrence of religious and educational tourism, and the resulting pride felt by residents in the surrounding settlements.

Abstract

This article analyzes the role of langgar in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta during the period of village development from 1773 to 1930. The three periods are when Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta first appeared, the second is during the batik industry period, and the third is during the birth of community organizations in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta, namely Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah. Langgar is a space for religious and social activities in Muslim-populated villages in Java, Indonesia. This study aims to explain the role of the seven langgars that still exist today in the socio-cultural life of Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta, related to local values, public space, and social roles. This research uses a qualitative method with the Grounded Theory method. This research explains that langgar in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta is not only present as a place of worship but also as a role of a node for the development of village settlements and community social spaces. The output of this article is expected to be the basis for a research framework that needs to be developed to study the role of the langgar and the sustainability of settlements in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Light will fall on an object and be reflected back to our eyes so we can see these objects. Visual comfort will be achieved when there is sufficient lighting in a room. If the light that comes in is less or more, it will disturb the comfort of human vision. The objective of this study is to delineate the area in the Gedhong Hinggil Dalem Mangkubumen Building to see whether it meets comfort standards for office buildings. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the Gedhong Hinggil building is suitable to be used as a workplace, so that it can provide input to campus managers to be able to improve the condition of the workplace without eliminating the authentic hierarchy of the traditional Gedhong Hinggil building. On average, the intensity values for rooms in the rectorate do not meet SNI requirements. The west side and east side areas already have quite wide openings. This building is a cultural heritage building that cannot be changed, to comply with the established SNI standards for work spaces or offices, the light intensity in the room can be increased by adding artificial lighting (lamps). The final result of this study shows that the Gedhong Hinggil Dalem Mangkubumen building does not meet the standards if used as an office building. This is because the building originally functioned as the residence of the Crown Prince.

Abstract

Gorontalo, a city rich in history and culture, has many elements of traditional architecture that serve as symbols of the identity and cultural heritage of its people. One important element in Gorontalo's traditional architecture is the Pahangga. Although previous research has discussed Gorontalo’s traditional architecture, limited studies have explored how Pahangga can be adapted in contemporary architecture while preserving its symbolic meaning. This study aims to explore the meaning and value of Pahangga as a representation of the identity and image of Gorontalo City. Pahangga, which is an ornament of Gorontalo culture, has a deep history and meaning in local culture. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with a semiotic approach, which analyzes signs and symbols to explore the philosophical meaning and cultural values contained in the Pahangga elements. The results of the study show that Pahangga has been used as a decorative element in various public buildings, such as school gates, city parks, and boundary gates. Pahangga not only has a symbolic meaning related to social hierarchy and cultural values, but also plays a role in shaping the identity and visual image of the city. This study concludes that Pahangga has great potential to be strengthened as an element that forms the identity and image of Gorontalo City through wider application to urban elements such as pedestrian paths and landmarks. Thus, the contributions and practical implications are expected to be a guide for city planners such as architects, urban planners, and parties involved in adopting local cultural elements as part of efforts to create inclusive, iconic, and culturally meaningful public spaces amidst city modernization.

Abstract

To know more deeply the traditional knowledge and practices of the indigenous people, such as Malaysia’s Orang Asli, is vital for environmental conservation and sustainable development. However, challenges like displacement, cultural erosion, and exclusion from decision-making, worsened by climate change and economic growth-focused policies—threaten their resilience. This paper examines these issues and highlights barriers such as poor legal protections, environmental degradation, and cultural marginalization. The method used is a literature study and field observation in the indigenous people’s village of Pahang, Malaysia. The results of the study, despite these obstacles, the Orang Asli Pahang display resilience through their heritage and selective integration of modern technologies. The study calls for rights-based, participatory approaches to create inclusive policies that protect cultural heritage and leverage indigenous wisdom for sustainable development.

Abstract

The interior design of the living room in a Muslim residence needs attention, because privacy in the house is strictly maintained, so it is necessary to implement a living room interior design that is based on Sharia. The objectives of this research are 1). Developing a living room interior design concept, 2) implementing an Islamic home interior design that is functional, aesthetic, and Islamic. This design is a combination of Islamic and sustainable concepts. The Sharia referred to is the mahram structure of the Muslim family, which has an impact on the hierarchy of spatial zones. The supporting approach is Islamic ethics in space and Islamic decorative arts. Sustainability is realized in the choice of environmentally friendly materials. The method used is a mixed literature study that takes references to Islamic values mentioned in the Al-Qur'an and Hadith and then applies them to research related to the concept of sustainable housing. The results of this research are the concept and implementation of sustainable living room interior design, including the hijab, Islamic decorative arts, sustainable architecture, and environmentally friendly materials.

Abstract

This research explores the implementation of a smart home system using the Internet of Things (IoT) with Google Nest as a voice-command interface to control lighting and CCTV in residential environments. The system integrates smart touchscreen light switches and IP-based surveillance cameras within the Google Home ecosystem. Through design, installation, and user testing, the system was evaluated for functionality, convenience, and user satisfaction. The study found that voice control enhanced accessibility, while touchscreen switches offered practical manual control when needed. Real-time CCTV monitoring via IP cameras provided added home security. However, challenges such as internet dependency and post-blackout functionality of smart devices were identified. Overall, the research demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of integrating IoT in modern homes and presents a user-friendly model that could inform future smart residential designs. The findings were also validated through practical implementation, as documented in a video published by Herlian Architecture Studio.
