Abstract

Communities across the globe are grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic by leveraging their local wisdom, and the Buddhist Kampong in Sodong Hamlet is no exception. Buddhist Kampong has experienced minimal COVID-19 exposure, demonstrating a proficient response to the pandemic. However, this success story remains largely unknown to various stakeholders, necessitating comprehensive research to delineate and elucidate the intrinsic value of local wisdom and its assimilation process. Using an ethnographic approach, this two-year research project was carried out in Sodong Hamlet, Gelangkulon, Sampung Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia. Primary and secondary sources were tapped, with research informants identified as traditional, religious, and community leaders. Data collection encompassed interviews, observations, and document recordings, all analyzed using an interactive model. The findings revealed a distinct value system within the Buddhist Kampong, shaping their approach to COVID-19 mitigation. This value system revolves around the principles of Memayu Hayuning Kulawarga, Memayu Hayuning Sasama, and Memayu Hayuning Bawana, influencing the community’s engagement in check-in rituals, care for sasomo and cooperation, and the restoration of padasan and diyang. The figures embodying this local wisdom guide community members in internalizing customs, religion, and parental teachings. The internalization process unfolds through exemplary habituation, socialization, and the cultivation of moral motivation, empowering citizens to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.

Abstract

Research on livelihood systems tends to focus on livelihood assets, the transformation of structures, processes, and livelihood outcomes. During disasters, livelihood systems are disrupted, and various socio-economic issues may arise if not properly addressed. This research provides a perspective on social-economic mitigation institutions in the context of community livelihood systems in disaster-prone areas. The research advocates the need for economic mitigation institutions in vulnerable communities in disaster-prone regions. The framework of these economic mitigation institutions emphasizes economic commodification schemes. This research examines the institutional dynamics communities implement in economic mitigation as part of their livelihood systems in disaster-prone regions. This research adopts a qualitative constructivist approach to construct a new conceptual framework for disaster mitigation. Data is collected through in-depth interviews and focused group discussions (FGDs). The findings show that various insights provide potential solutions for disaster-prone livelihood systems based on theoretical analysis and empirical findings from disaster-prone areas in Indonesia. Economic mitigation institutions are crucial for vulnerable communities and essential for sustainable development. Moreover, communities residing in disaster-prone areas naturally develop survival strategies by utilizing available resources.

Abstract

Since Indonesia gained independence in 1945, security dynamics have been intricately linked with conflict. The emergence of separatist movements, such as the Free Papua Movement or Free Papua Organization (Organisasi Papua Merdeka or OPM), has significantly disrupted Indonesia’s stability. This study aims to analyze the actions undertaken by OPM in their quest for independence, utilizing the perspective of the Montevideo Convention of 1933. Employing a qualitative descriptive research methodology, this research relies on secondary data from a literature review focused on the Papua region. The study reveals several key findings: The size and stability of a population are critical factors for the existence of a state. West Papua, with a population of 1.15 million, plays a pivotal role. The establishment of well-defined territories is crucial for distinguishing and representing nations. The proposed establishment of the Republic of West Papua has garnered support and recognition from nations like Vanuatu. Moreover, the Republic of West Papua actively engages in international organizations such as UNPO. Establishing and exercising effective government control over a nation’s territory is essential for asserting sovereignty and maintaining independence. This is exemplified by the Papua National Manifesto and the declaration of Papua’s independence in 1961. Building and maintaining relationships with other countries necessitate active participation in the global community. International recognition and support play pivotal roles in achieving long-term political goals. Challenges related to democracy, human rights, and environmental issues pose significant hurdles to Indonesia’s diplomatic relations. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle offers a framework for preventing mass atrocities and holding state actors accountable for crimes against humanity. International cooperation and dialogue are imperative in addressing these complex issues and safeguarding the well-being of affected populations.

Abstract

The increase in CO2 emissions has led to a rise in global temperatures. The rising CO2 emissions in ASEAN need further examination concerning the variables influencing this increase. This study aims to test and obtain empirical evidence on the determinants of CO2 emissions in six ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) during the period 2000–2021. The factors considered in this study include Economic Growth (GGDP), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Total Population (POP), Fossil Energy Consumption (EF), and Renewable Energy Consumption (GET). This research employs panel data regression using both time series and cross-sectional data. The Chow and Hausman tests were conducted to determine the appropriate model, and the fixed-effect model was selected as the best fit. This research demonstrates that GET has an insignificant relationship with CO2 emissions, whereas GGDP, FDI, POP, and EF have significant relationships with CO2 emissions. In conclusion, considering all the independent variables in this study that affect CO2 emissions, future efforts should focus on finding ways to control these variables to reduce CO2 emissions.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively map and evaluate the quality of E-Government services in local governments throughout Indonesia, focusing on public perceptions. Employing a descriptive method and qualitative approach, data collection involves non-participant observation. Researchers observed the implementation of E-Government within provincial-level local governments participating in the 2021 Electronic-Based Government Systems evaluation through Google Play. Data analysis utilizes an interactive model to provide nuanced insights. The findings reveal that E-Government implementation in Indonesian provincial governments is primarily concentrated within the E-Service category, comprising 50% or 89 applications. The most advanced category is E-Information, encompassing 38% or 67 applications. However, the E-Participation category is notably underrepresented, with only 15% or 19 applications implemented by provincial governments in Indonesia. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s current landscape of E-Government services. It underscores the importance of further developments, particularly in promoting citizen participation and engagement.

Abstract

The threat of terrorism in Indonesia is not a new phenomenon but has persisted since the early years of independence. Presently, perpetrators of terrorism come from various groups with diverse motives, encompassing ideology, politics, and security disturbances. This study aims to delineate the profile, characteristics, and motives of terrorism in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive research method with a qualitative approach, data collection involved non-participant observation. The findings reveal that from 2017 to 2022, there were 97 recorded instances of terrorism actions in Indonesia. Political motives predominantly drove these actions, constituting 88 cases. Moreover, the targets of terrorist actions exhibited minimal disparity between non-civilian and civilian objects, with 59 and 38 cases, respectively. The terrorism action networks are primarily associated with Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (69 cases), East Indonesia Mujahideen (10 cases), and Lone Wolf operatives (7 cases). The study’s findings highlight the role of political factors in terrorist activities in Indonesia, informing policymakers and law enforcement agencies about the need for targeted interventions to address underlying grievances and enhance social cohesion. Furthermore, identifying terrorist networks offers valuable intelligence for disrupting these groups, ultimately improving national security and public safety.

Abstract

This article examines how cultural perspectives have emerged and shifted the managerial perspective in studying corporate culture. There is no single approach to understanding organizational culture, as many factors influence its formation. The shift from functional to symbolic approaches is viewed as a form of resistance. A qualitative approach, employing literature review methods, is used in this study to view organizations as cultures and to see communication as a cultural performance. The study explores the opportunities and developments of corporate culture studies in Indonesia. By outlining these aspects, the article aims to contribute to the enrichment of organizational culture literature. This work is expected to enhance research and studies on organizational culture in Indonesia and provide a comprehensive view of the emergence of cultural perspectives in corporate culture studies. The author believes there are numerous opportunities for developing corporate culture studies in Indonesia, alongside the paradigm shift in evaluating corporate culture not only from a managerial perspective but also from a broader cultural perspective.

Abstract

The Indonesian government strives to achieve environmental sustainability and economic growth as integral components of its development strategy. Two perspectives are applied to evaluate whether Indonesia’s economic growth adversely impacts environmental preservation: the Business as Usual approach and the Green Growth framework. This study examines Indonesia’s financial commitment to green growth, which is being implemented nationwide. Employing a quantitative research approach, this study analyzes the Green Growth Framework (GGF) concerning Financial Deepening and its impact on Sustainable Development Goals from 1973 to 2014. Methodologies include the Error Correction Model (ECM) and Vector Auto Regression (VAR). The research explores the dynamics between Indonesia’s economic growth and the implementation of the GGF, highlighting how various indicators within the GGF demonstrate both immediate and long-term relationships with the framework. The analysis provides insights into the extent of Indonesia’s progress in integrating green growth principles within its financial and economic systems. The ECM and VAR methodologies reveal the short-term fluctuations and long-term trends, respectively, offering a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between economic policies and environmental sustainability. Results indicate that implementing the GGF significantly impacts financial deepening, influencing sustainable development outcomes. The findings suggest that while there is a strong connection between economic growth and environmental preservation initiatives, continuous efforts and policy adjustments are necessary to ensure the long-term success of green growth strategies. This study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development by presenting empirical evidence from Indonesia, serving as a potential model for other developing nations aiming to balance economic expansion with environmental stewardship. The research underscores the importance of adopting a green growth framework to achieve sustainable development goals, providing valuable implications for policymakers and stakeholders.

Abstract

Millennial farmers are part of the farmer regeneration acceleration program aimed at increasing the number of farmers and expanding the supply of entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. This study was conducted to predict the behavior of millennial farmers through their intentions, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), comprehensively integrating individual aspects with their environment. The purpose of the study is to analyze the factors that influence the entrepreneurial intentions of millennial farmers. The research method employed a survey method, with sampling carried out using a saturation sampling method involving 54 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis utilizing Smart Partial Least Squares (PLS) 3.0. The research findings revealed that 81.49% of millennial farmers have entrepreneurial intentions, specifically in agriculture. Entrepreneurial intention is significantly influenced by variables such as attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control. The entrepreneurial intention of millennial farmers is predominantly influenced by attitude toward the behavior and subjective norms. For millennial farmers deciding to venture into entrepreneurship, relying solely on the importance of belief and self-evaluation is not enough; the motivation and desire to meet expectations also play a crucial role in enhancing intention.
