Abstract

The swift and profound societal changes triggered by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic have necessitated rapid adaptations in individual behaviors within daily life routines. This study addresses the vital role of sociological studies in reshaping societies amid globalization within the New Normal Era. Employing a sociological lens grounded in Talcott Parsons’ functionalism theory, this study employs a meticulous and rigorous descriptive qualitative research design. This study investigation draws upon an extensive and systematic collection of diverse bibliographic sources, encompassing previous scholarly research that sheds light on behavioral shifts before and after the pandemic, alongside credible information from mainstream media outlets. The intricate dynamics of societal metamorphosis during the New Normal epoch are intricately intertwined with the inherent complexities of the prevailing social system, actively grappling with the diverse and enduring aftermath of the coronavirus. Notably, Parsons’ AGIL framework emerges as pivotal in facilitating the establishment of a fresh and adaptive social equilibrium. The realization of the New Normal paradigm hinges on the ethical evaluation and calibration of precisely defined indicators, fostering seamless collaboration and integration among diverse community constituents. Ultimately, this study underscores sociological studies’ indispensable and central role in deeply understanding, critically analyzing, and effectively reshaping societies amidst the profound and multifaceted challenges posed by globalization and the transformative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Visiting tourist villages has become an alternative tourism trend favored by both domestic and international tourists. This trend is driven by tourists’ desire to gain new experiences and discover unique and distinctive natural and cultural attractions. Cireundeu Traditional Village is an increasingly visited destination, especially by students, university students, and academics. The management of these tourist villages is based on community involvement, known as Community-Based Tourism (CBT), where the participation of the local community is essential. This research aims to explore and analyze how the organizational communication of the Pokdarwis (Tourism Awareness Group) is carried out with mentors, fellow administrators, and the community in the context of managing the Cireundeu Traditional Village. The research seeks to identify communication patterns, obstacles, and the effectiveness of the communication strategies implemented. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data was collected through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with members of the Pokdarwis, mentors, administrators, and local community members. Data analysis was conducted thematically to identify key patterns and themes in organizational communication based on local wisdom. The results show that Pokdarwis’ organizational communication is mostly acquired autodidactically. They can effectively understand and implement organizational communication functions and flows based on local wisdom. The Pokdarwis can communicate vertically, horizontally, and diagonally with mentors, fellow administrators, and the community. They can also express ideas and views, inform, empathize, and coordinate in the management of the Cireundeu Traditional Village. The organizational communication behavior of the Pokdarwis is based on local wisdom communication traditions, which include the principles of mutual learning, caring, nurturing, and sharing. It also involves relational foundations such as compassion for others, respect for lineage, etiquette, courteous behavior, and self-control.

Abstract

In pursuing enhancing human resources’ quality, the state has ensured that private universities also have rights and obligations. The main objective of this study is to investigate whether personal selling and brand image influence college decision-making through the mediating role of brand trust. This research was conducted at the Politeknik Unggul LP3M in Medan, Indonesia. The study’s population was comprised of active students from the 2019/2020 academic year, totaling 257 individuals. A stratified sampling technique was employed, using the Slovin formula with a 5% margin of error, resulting in a sample size of 157 respondents. The study utilized a quantitative approach, with data collected through structured questionnaires. The analysis included descriptive statistics, reliability tests, and path analysis to determine the direct and indirect effects of personal selling and brand image on college decision-making through brand trust. The findings indicate that personal selling significantly affects brand trust, suggesting that effective strategies can enhance students’ trust in the institution’s brand. Similarly, brand image significantly directly affects brand trust, underscoring the importance of a positive brand image in building trust among potential students. Furthermore, the results show that personal selling indirectly influences college decision-making through brand trust, indicating that the trust developed through personal selling efforts can lead to positive college choice decisions. Likewise, brand image indirectly affects college decision-making through brand trust, highlighting the role of a strong brand image in shaping students’ enrollment decisions. In conclusion, personal selling and brand image are crucial in influencing college decisions, with brand trust as a key mediating variable. These findings provide valuable insights for educational institutions aiming to enhance their marketing strategies and build stronger relationships with prospective students. Future research could explore additional factors influencing college decision-making and examine these relationships in different educational contexts.

Abstract

Stakeholder involvement is essential to destination development. They may serve as catalysts or impediments to the growth of tourist sites. This study explores the barriers to tourism destination development associated with the role of local tourism authorities. A qualitative approach, employing semi-structured interviews, was utilized to examine the root causes of these challenges. Sixteen stakeholders, including ten government officials responsible for regional tourism development and six community leaders, were selected as informants in this study. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data. The investigation revealed four main barriers to destination development from government agencies. There are bureaucratic hurdles, contrived program activities, overlapping roles of local governments, and the community’s misconceptions about the government’s role in destination development. These factors collectively hinder the successful implementation of government-led tourism programs. The study suggests that understanding and addressing these barriers are vital to fostering a progressive, sustainable, competitive tourist destination. On a practical level, the findings can help policymakers redesign their strategies to create more community-centric programs, clearly define roles, and manage community expectations. Conceptually, this study expands the existing literature on the role of government and bureaucracy in developing tourist destinations. The study highlights the importance of a participatory approach that engages all stakeholders in the planning and implementation tourism policies and programs.

Abstract

The circular economy seeks to maximize resource utility while enhancing waste materials’ added value. Herbal beverages are derived from biopharmaceutical plants, commonly using ginger, cardamom, turmeric, aromatic ginger or lesser galangal, and curcuma. This study had two primary objectives: (1) to analyze the physicochemical characteristics of instant ginger, instant turmeric, and instant ginger beverages, and (2) to enhance the economic value of production waste by converting it into liquid organic fertilizer (POC). The research was conducted at the small and medium enterprise “AIG Bunda Nisa” in Semarang Regency, Indonesia. Physicochemical characteristics were assessed through proximate analysis, and the quality of the POC was evaluated based on the standards set by the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (No.216/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019). The findings revealed that waste from the production of instant herbal drinks can be effectively repurposed as POC. The analysis showed that instant ginger beverages have higher ash and carbohydrate content than fresh ginger but lower total fat and protein content. Additionally, instant ginger beverages’ caloric value and carbohydrate content are higher than fresh ginger. Conversely, instant ginger’s protein content is lower than fresh ginger’s. In the case of turmeric, the ash, total fat, moisture, and protein content in fresh turmeric were lower than in instant turmeric beverages.

Abstract

The relocation of Indonesia’s capital city from Jakarta to East Kalimantan (IKN Nusantara) is an ambitious project aimed at reducing pressure on Jakarta and promoting more balanced development across the country. However, land development regulations in IKN often conflict with the customary land values held by local communities. Additionally, land rights regulations under the IKN Law contradict the agrarian reform goals intended by the Basic Agrarian Law of 1960. A similar situation occurs in Rempang, where Indigenous communities are burdened with proving ownership of land that is being “seized” under the National Strategic Project (PSN). This is in stark contrast to the constitutional spirit of protecting indigenous rights, which only requires recognition “as long as they still exist.” This study aims to assess the impact of land development regulations on customary land values, focusing on case studies in Rempang and IKN Nusantara in Indonesia. A qualitative approach is used in this research, with data collection methods including in-depth interviews with local stakeholders, policy document analysis, and participatory observation. Rempang and IKN were chosen as case studies because they represent conflicts between development regulations and customary land values. The research found that land development regulations often disregard the rights of indigenous communities, leading to conflicts and dissatisfaction among local communities. In Rempang, Indigenous communities face significant challenges in proving their land ownership, which is constitutionally recognized but overlooked in the implementation of PSN policies. In IKN Nusantara, the implementation of national policies shows significant gaps with local practices, exacerbating tensions and dissatisfaction. Additionally, the study reveals a lack of effective mechanisms to involve indigenous communities in the decision-making process regarding land development, leading to further exclusion and marginalization. To achieve sustainable and inclusive development in IKN Nusantara and Rempang, policymakers must consider and integrate customary land values into development regulations. Policy recommendations include more intensive consultations with indigenous communities, stronger recognition of indigenous land rights, and revising regulations to respond more to local needs. A more participatory and inclusive approach is necessary to reduce conflicts and ensure development benefits all stakeholders. In Rempang, in particular, fair and transparent mechanisms are needed for land rights proof in line with the constitutional spirit.
