Abstract

This research assesses the direct and indirect impact of emotional intelligence, work-life balance, leadership, and work ethics on employee performance at the Camait office in Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra. Employing a quantitative analytic approach, the study sampled 146 workers, from which 88 employees were selected using the Slovin formula. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings reveal that emotional intelligence, work-life balance, leadership, and motivation directly, positively, and significantly impact employee performance. In contrast, work ethic does not significantly affect employee performance. Moreover, motivation is a moderating variable that can indirectly influence the relationships between work-life balance, leadership, work ethic, and employee performance. However, motivation alone cannot effectively moderate the relationship between work ethic and employee performance at the Central Tapanuli Regency Head Office. This study underscores the importance of enhancing emotional intelligence, achieving a better work-life balance, and cultivating effective leadership to boost employee performance. Furthermore, it highlights the crucial role of motivation as a moderating factor in improving overall job performance. However, it emphasizes that motivation should be complemented with other strategies to address work ethic issues effectively.

Abstract

This study investigates the development of early childhood social skills within Banjarmasin, Indonesia’s riverside communities. Social skills are crucial for the holistic development of children, facilitating better interaction, cooperation, and communication, which are essential for their personal and social growth. The unique socio-cultural dynamics of the riverside communities in Banjarmasin provide a distinctive environment for examining how these skills are nurtured. Utilizing a qualitative research design, this study aims to comprehend the socio-cultural context, identify specific social skills developed in early childhood, and assess the effectiveness of various community-based initiatives designed to foster these skills. The purposive sampling method was employed to select informants who could provide in-depth and relevant data. Data collection involved a combination of observations, semi-structured interviews, and active participation in community activities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved. The findings reveal that children in these communities enhance their social skills through a learning process deeply embedded in community values, emphasizing interaction and play. Community values, interactive learning, and cultural integration contribute to social skill development. Reinforcing community values such as togetherness, sharing, and mutual respect plays a critical role in socialization. Activities that promote interaction and play are central to developing social skills, with group activities such as cooperative games, creative arts, and storytelling sessions proving particularly effective in encouraging children to work together, communicate effectively, and build confidence. Additionally, the unique Banjar River culture significantly influences social behaviors, with activities specific to the river culture, including riverboat play and traditional storytelling, imparting cultural values and enhancing social competencies among children. The study concludes that leveraging the cultural uniqueness of the Banjar River communities is essential in building social skills in early childhood. Children in Banjarmasin’s riverside communities develop essential social skills more effectively by integrating community values and interactive learning within this cultural context. This research highlights the importance of culturally relevant approaches in early childhood education and suggests that similar methodologies could be adapted to other cultural settings to support social skill development.

Abstract

This research investigates the strategies implemented by higher education institutions in Indonesia to enhance the career sustainability of their graduates while exploring potential strengthening opportunities that need attention. The study is motivated by several significant changes, such as the expansion of a flexible job market and the uncertainty of the transition for graduates from the educational environment to the workforce. The research was conducted at eight universities in four cities from July to October 2021. The selection of these cities aimed to encompass the geographical diversity of Indonesia and represent the educational centers in each region. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving each university’s students, alumni, and career development unit managers. Three main findings emerged regarding the efforts made by the universities, including curriculum adjustments by adding entrepreneurship courses, establishing or developing career development units, and expanding networks of partners to benefit students and alumni. However, institutional capacity, human resource availability, networks, and local contexts also influenced the selection and dynamics of the applied strategies. Consequently, the achieved outcomes varied and could not be measured with uniform parameters. This research argues that policy interventions to enhance the career sustainability of university graduates should consider this complexity. Therefore, we recommend policymakers get involved in implementing independent learning and independent Campuses to understand the diverse initial conditions of universities.

Abstract

This study examines the role of motivation as a moderator between career development and job satisfaction. Career development is crucial to job satisfaction, and motivation is believed to strengthen this relationship. This quantitative research employed a survey involving 85 respondents from Kediri Civil Servants in 2021. To ensure the validity and reliability of the data, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted using KMO and Bartlett’s tests, and reliability was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha. The classical assumption tests included the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality, the Glejser test for heteroscedasticity, and the multicollinearity test. Moderation Regression Analysis was utilized to identify the types of moderators involved in the relationship between career development and job satisfaction. The findings indicate that motivation is a pure moderator, fully moderating the relationship between career development and job satisfaction. This suggests that motivation is an intervening variable and a significant determinant in enhancing job satisfaction through career development. The study provides practical implications for organizations to consider the importance of motivation in career development programs to boost employee job satisfaction. It is recommended that further research be conducted with more respondents and in various organizational contexts to obtain more comprehensive and generalizable results.

Abstract

The development of rural tourism villages has emerged as a significant alternative in transforming subsistence agriculture patterns in rural areas, often characterized by irregular income streams that barely sustain basic needs. The trend of rural tourism village development is observed in many subsistence farming communities, leveraging the unique potential of natural and cultural resources that can be tapped through village fund utilization. The initiation of rural tourism village development in Ngargoretno Village began with community-driven efforts and a communal spirit to realize the concept of such a village. The village authorities also provided support by allocating village funds and empowerment activities, including training sessions for the youth who play a pivotal role in driving rural tourism village development. This research aims to describe the collaborative efforts between the community and village authorities in realizing rural tourism villages and identify the success factors in rural tourism village development. This research adopts a qualitative approach, with data collection conducted through observations and interviews with key stakeholders from the community and village authorities involved in rural tourism village development. The theoretical foundation of this research lies in empowerment theory, emphasizing the involvement of various stakeholders, including village authorities, educational institutions, and community organizations in rural tourism village development. The findings reveal active community involvement in infrastructure development such as roads, enhancement of tourist attractions through cleaning and painting marble, and the establishment of public facilities such as toilets. Furthermore, partnerships with educational institutions like Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Magelang Tourism Office have enriched tourism packages by introducing additional attractions such as tea plantation tours and religious tourism and promoting local cuisine. The development of rural tourism villages is also expected to increase the income of Ngargoretno Village residents through a rise in tourist visits from outside the village and the creation of new employment opportunities for the younger generation. Optimism persists, fueled by the enthusiastic spirit of village authorities and the community in developing the concept of rural tourism villages.

Abstract

Panopticism in the medical world reflects a structural dominance of power. Panopticism takes the form of medical regime authority aimed at surveillance, regulation, and discipline to frame the thoughts and actions of individuals in line with modern health standards. The issue is that panopticism doesn't always work effectively according to the desires of the medical regime. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the mechanisms of panopticism and identify the spectrum of resistance to the modern healthcare system. Using an applied method, the study found resistance in modern health practices, namely: (a) accessing modern treatment but accompanied by skepticism and criticism of modern medicine; (b) developing a pluralistic or combinative medical orientation; (c) opting out and constructing alternative discourses about the healthcare system following autonomy of will and power. Health resistance is triggered by skepticism and distrust, asymmetrical relations based on scientific authority, limited access to modern medical products, and the existence of informal networks, as well as the strong role of local social and cultural figures in directing the choices of healthcare systems for the community.

Abstract

Character education is essential in shaping students’ morals and ethics. This study aims to examine the role of metacognition in character education through a comprehensive literature review. Metacognition, encompassing metacognitive knowledge and skills, enhances the effectiveness of character education by providing strategies such as self-reflection, goal setting, self-monitoring, and self-assessment. The research employs a literature review approach, selecting articles and studies from credible and relevant sources. Data analysis addresses the main question of how metacognitive strategies can be applied to shape students’ morals and ethics. Key findings indicate that metacognition significantly contributes to character education, although challenges such as limited teacher understanding and resource constraints persist. Identified opportunities include developing teacher training programs focused on metacognition and character education and the potential for improved student learning outcomes. This study concludes that integrating metacognition into character education not only enhances the formation of students’ morals and ethics but also offers practical strategies for implementation in schools. Practical recommendations and areas for further research are presented for ongoing development in this field.

Abstract

Traditional oral literature has long served to preserve and pass down cultural values and wisdom. In the Uluan society of South Sumatra, pantun, a traditional Malay poetic form, plays a central role in communicating messages related to societal norms and environmental stewardship. This study explores the environmental wisdom embedded in Uluan pantun, using a symbolic interactionism perspective to examine how these oral traditions convey ecological messages. The research employs a qualitative methodology with an ethnographic communication approach. Data were collected through documentation of ancient pantun texts, in-depth interviews with cultural practitioners and local community members, participatory observation in key Uluan regions, and focus group discussions (FGD) to provide a comprehensive view of how pantun is actualized in contemporary environmental conservation efforts. The results show that pantun is an important medium for conveying explicit and implicit messages about the natural environment, reflecting the community’s deep connection with nature. However, modern challenges such as deforestation and land degradation have threatened the sustainability of these traditions. The novelty of this research lies in its examination of pantun as an instrument for ecological communication, an area that has received little attention in previous studies. The findings imply that revitalizing the ecological messages within pantun could significantly promote environmental awareness and community-driven conservation in Uluan society today.
