Abstract

Background: Divorce is a significant life event that can have profound effects on children, particularly in their educational attainment. Previous research suggests that parental divorce can lead to various negative consequences, including psychological distress, social instability, and economic challenges. However, there is limited empirical evidence examining the impact of parental divorce on children's educational attainment in Indonesia. Methods: This study utilizes data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) waves 3, 4, and 5 to examine the educational outcomes of children with divorced parents compared to those with married parents. The analysis explores the relationship between parental divorce and children's educational attainment while considering potential influencing factors such as maternal characteristics and the possibility of reverse causality. Findings: The study found that children from divorced families generally had lower educational attainment than those from intact families. However, children whose parents were currently divorced had better educational outcomes than children whose parents remained married. This paradoxical finding suggests the influence of factors such as maternal education and potential reverse causality. Additionally, the study found that the age at which divorce occurs plays a crucial role divorce at an early age has a more negative impact on educational attainment due to children's higher dependency on parents and limited coping mechanisms. However, no significant differences were found between boys and girls in terms of educational outcomes after divorce. Conclusions: Parental divorce negatively impacts children's educational attainment, primarily due to economic hardship, changes in parenting roles, and psychological distress. However, some children from currently divorced families show better educational outcomes, possibly due to maternal characteristics and other mediating factors. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the impact of parental divorce on children's educational attainment in Indonesia, a context with limited prior research.

Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of illegal online lending (pinjol) in Indonesia has raised concerns regarding its impact on students. Despite their status as educated individuals, many students face financial hardships that push them to seek alternative financial solutions, including illegal online loans. This research explores the factors leading students to use illegal online loans, the victimization process, and the long-term consequences on their academic and financial well-being. Methods: This study employs a qualitative research approach using a critical criminology framework to analyze the structural factors contributing to student victimization. Data were collected through structured interviews with seven students from different universities in Indonesia, all of whom had firsthand experience as illegal online loan users. Findings: Many students refrain from reporting their cases due to fear of social stigma, legal repercussions, and the perception that authorities may not take their complaints seriously. Students face financial strain due to tuition fees, living expenses, and societal expectations to be independent. Many are forced to seek quick financial solutions, leading them to illegal lending platforms. Victims often face intimidation and threats from debt collectors, including exposure of personal information. Conclusions: Illegal online loans create significant financial, psychological, and academic challenges for students. The exploitative nature of these loans exacerbates existing economic inequalities, forcing students into cycles of debt and distress. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study offers a new perspective on the role of financial stress and social expectations in student involvement with illegal online lending. Unlike previous research that focuses solely on digital lending regulation, this study examines the personal experiences of student borrowers and the structural factors contributing to their financial victimization. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and educators in developing preventive strategies to reduce student dependency on illegal online loans.

Abstract

Background: Japanese office workers are widely recognized for their discipline, innovation, and strong work ethic. These values reflect Japan’s collective dedication to organizational and national advancement. However, this cultural rigor also creates psychological pressure and limited individual freedom. Understanding this phenomenon through Hofstede’s cultural dimensions offers insights into Japan’s distinctive work behavior. Methods: This study employed documentation and literature study techniques. Video interviews of six Japanese workers from the Takashi From Japan YouTube channel were analyzed using Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions: power distance, collectivism vs. individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity/femininity. Supporting literature was reviewed to validate findings. Finding: Results reveal a high power distance, with workers showing strong obedience toward superiors and organizational hierarchy. Japanese work culture is predominantly collectivist, emphasizing group harmony and social contribution over personal interest. A high level of uncertainty avoidance leads workers to remain in rigid systems to minimize risk. Although less explored, masculinity is evident through hard work, self-sacrifice, and achievement orientation. Overall, the culture fosters stability and loyalty but often causes psychological strain and reduced personal expression. Conclusion: Japanese work culture is characterized by hierarchy, collectivism, and avoidance of uncertainty, reinforcing discipline and organizational stability while creating pressure and emotional fatigue among workers. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study offers a unique qualitative exploration of Japanese work culture through Hofstede’s framework based on real worker experiences from digital media sources, providing fresh insights into cultural dynamics in modern Japan.
