Abstract

Jabiri's philosophical thought has had a very broad influence both at the global and national levels. The concept of reason is formed and active and the episteme trilogy allows a critical reading of Islamic law. It helps distinguish between the transcendent and absolute normative values of Islam and the contextual historical and methodological side of Islam. Using Jabiri's thinking, this study will formulate a critique of the Islamization of Psychology movement that has been developing for a long time. The problem is that the Islamization of psychology works by consolidating the bayani episteme and making the bayani psychology dominant. This creates a theoretical dead end in Islamic psychology because it is bound by the text and context of the holy book, thereby ignoring the dynamics of modern science. It is also shown that other Islamic epistemes can give different forms to the Islamization of Science with the development that has been carried out by several Muslim scholars on a limited basis as an example. The implication is that Islamic psychology must present an alternative epistemological structure that overcomes old limitations before being followed by an Islamic psychology that is able to provide benefits throughout the ages.

Abstract

The paper aims to highlight Muhammad Asad’s epistemological postulate on Islamic politics as reflected in his works on Islamic state. It seeks to address these fundamental problems: what is the legal basis that support and establish Asad’s position of founding an Islamic state? and how could this idea fairly accommodates with the prevailing notion of nation state in post-colonial context. Thus, the study set forth to find the answers based on such range of objectives: to analyse the underlying ideas of Islamic state as advocated in the classical sources, to define the basic constitutional framework as developed by Asad in the context of historical Pakistan, to estimate the implication of implementing Islamic law and its impact on the global politics and its compatibility with international law. In this regards, Asad had formulated the constitutional ideas of Islamic state whose constitution contains the provision of Islamic law that practiced and implemented the norms stated in the Divine Writ. This ideas was partly enshrined in the Pakistan constitutional law whose political establishment was formed in 1947. The paper essentially discussed Muhammad Asad’s political ideas and its underlying philosophy as espoused in his works. The study conducted based on qualitative approaches of the type of library research. The data were analysed by way of descriptive, analytical and comparative technique. The finding shows that Muhammad Asad had formulated comprehensive theoretical framework of legal aspect of Islamic governance drawn up from the fundamental principle and doctrine of the shariah, and its moral norms deriving from the explicit Qur’anic and sunnah text, while also advocating democratic ideals and principles based on conventional practice and requirement of modern context of nation state. Based on this main finding, it is concluded that Islamic teaching and its spiritual norms were compatible with democratic ideal and values of human right, participatory and constitutional government as implemented in the democratic space of Pakistan.

Abstract

Religious radicalism is a serious problem because it can trigger conflicts between believers. This problem comes from certain religious groups that claim their beliefs are the most correct, such as radical Muslims. Negative behaviors such as the phenomena of blaming others, violence, and even terrorism, occur due to religious radicalism. This research discusses the thoughts of a Muslim scholar named Buya Syakur about the theology of harmony as an effort to overcome religious radicalism. This type of research is a document research with descriptive-analytical method. The primary sources are two videos of Buya Syakur's lectures, Moderasi Beragama Merajut Nasionalisme & Toleransi Beragama and Dialog Kerukunan Islam–Buddha, as well as two of his works entitled Merawat Pluralitas and Berbagi Kebahagiaan: Mengenal Maqom-Maqom Tasawuf. The research findings showed that the concept of theology of harmony perspective of Buya Syakur is divided into three aspects, reviewing the concept of kafir and taqwa, looking critically through the life history of the Prophet Muhammad, and the importance of maintaining plurality and cooperation between religious communities.

Abstract

Does Islam advocate inequality? This question has been a concern of Muslim scholars in recent centuries, notably Qasim Amin and Asma Barlas. Hence, this paper aims to make a comparative study of Amin and Barlas’s thoughts on the liberation of women. The data will be analyzed through a descriptive-analytic approach. The analysis finds that Amin and Barlas have similarities and differences in voicing women's freedom. They criticize and reconstruct some concepts considered established within the Islamic tradition, such as hijāb and polygamy. They firmly oppose the established idea of hijab, which means covering women's entire bodies except for their eyes, which is contrary to Islamic teaching. They disagree, however, on which a hijab should cover parts of a woman's body. Furthermore, Amin broadens the definition of hijāb, which restricts women's movements (qasr al-mar’ah fī al-bait). In terms of polygamy, however, they critically assessed the classical understanding of the permissibility of polygamy. Therefore, they impose strict conditions on the permissibility of polygamy. Nevertheless, Amin seems to advocate that polygamy is not permissible. Amin and Barlas were inspired to reform Muslim society, specifically women's liberation, by their social context and experiences. Despite their good intentions, their ideas have received both criticism and praise. This mixed reception emphasizes the continuous struggle in the Muslim world about gender, tradition, and modernization.

Abstract

This article explores the concept of moderation held by the State through the program run by the Ministry of Religious Affairs named Moderasi Beragama (Religious Moderation). The discussion consists of religious moderation throughout history of Indonesia, highlighted it as a moderate approach supported and organised by the state, including its strategies and challenges. This qualitative research uses content analysis as an analytical method of collecting data from primary and secondary sources. The study showed that Religious Moderation was campaigned by the State through several programs, strategies and a similar proposed agenda started even from the New Order era to the disruption era. Constructed by the multi-religious theological concept of moderation and strengthened by the State constitutional basis, the program met challenges that should develop some strategies to implement religious moderation effectively and efficiently. Although radicalism has not been completely eradicated, at least the state has committed to fostering religious harmony and moderation through inclusive state policies and collaborative efforts with various religious and community stakeholders.

Abstract

Global challenges are becoming increasingly difficult to address, largely due to competition between major world powers and conflicts rooted in identity. These dynamicspose significant risks to peace, security, and well-being both within countries and internationally. This study aims to assess the role of religion in contributing to the development and humanitarian efforts at global and national levels through a qualitative analysis, the study examines the G20 forum, which includes the world’s major economies, to explore how religious influences shape global policies and initiatives. The discussion highlights four key functions of religion: strengthening unity, promoting interfaith dialogue to counter the misuse of religion in politics, opposing wars while supporting victims of conflict, and encouraging ethical behavior to ensure lasting peace. On a national level, with a specific focus on Indonesia, religion has historically served to advance the concept of ‘maslahah’ (the public good) and now holds an increasingly vital role in shaping political systems. Because of upcoming humanitarian missions, this analysis emphasizes the need for spiritual values to be integrated into efforts to enhance global harmony. It also calls for reflection on how effectively these values are being put into practice to support peace and solidarity across nations.
