Abstract

Osphronemus gouramy is a widely cultivated fish because it has economic value in the community and is high in protein. The addition of turmeric powder and maggot flour can increase the nutritional value of gurami fish feed. The study was conducted from January to May 2025 at the Parasite and Fish Disease Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Riau. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of adding turmeric powder (Curcuma domestica Val) and maggot meal (Hermetia illucens) to the feed on the hematology of O. gouramy infected with Aeromonas hydrophila. The method used was an experiment with a completely randomized design with one factor and five treatments, namely Kn (feeding without the addition of maggot meal and turmeric powder without infection with A. hydrophila), Kp (feed without maggot meal and turmeric powder, infected with A. hydrophila), P1, P2, and P3 (feed with 0.9 g/kg turmeric powder and 20, 30, and 40 g/kg maggot meal, then infected with A. hydrophila). Feeding was carried out three times a day to satiation. On day 32, the fish were infected with A. hydrophilla at a density of 108 CFU/mL, 0.1 ml. The results showed that feed containing 0.9 g/kg turmeric powder and 30 g/kg maggot meal resulted in a total erythrocyte count of 1.91×106 cells/mm, hematocrit of 38%, hemoglobin 9.06 g/dL, total leukocytes 11.15x10⁴ cells/mm³, phagocytosis activity 25.66%, absolute weight gain 11.71 g/fish, specific length 5.74 cm, and survival rate 80%. Water quality during the study was as follows: temperature ranging from 27.6-29°C, pH 6.51-7.61, and DO 4.6-5.9 mg/L. Based on the data, it can be concluded that the addition of turmeric and maggots to pellets can increase the growth and immunity of O. gouramy infected with A. hydrophila

Abstract

Empty fruit bunches (EFB) are the main solid waste product of the palm oil industry and have great potential to be processed into high-value organic fertilizer. However, the natural decomposition process is very slow. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of several types of decomposers (EM-4, Eco-enzyme, M-21, and MSG-3) in accelerating the TKKS composting process and to identify the socio-economic conditions and perceptions of the Lubuk Ogung Village community regarding community-based waste management. The method used was a mixed-methods design, with a completely randomized design (CRD) and three replicates for technical analysis and in-depth interviews for social aspects. The parameters observed included the C/N ratio, organic C, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The results showed that Eco-enzyme and M-21 were the most effective decomposers, producing final C/N ratios of 16.44 and 17.25, respectively, which meet the SNI 7763:2024 standard. Socially, the community showed a positive perception of TKKS composting, though they still faced obstacles in technical knowledge, market access, and program sustainability. These findings indicate that the application of decomposer technology, particularly Eco-enzyme, has the potential to strengthen waste management and promote community empowerment through circular economy practices at the village level.

Abstract

Sea stars, members of the Echinodermata phylum, are closely associated with seagrass beds and play a role in the food chain. High seagrass cover supports a variety of biota, including sea stars. This study aims to determine the types and density of starfish (Asteroidea) in the seagrass ecosystem of Pengudang Village, Bintan Regency, Kepulauan Riau Province. This research was conducted in September 2024 in Pengudang Village, Bintan Regency, Kepulauan Riau Province. Starfish sampling and observation were conducted at three station points, with each station having three transect lines.  Each transect contained ten observation plots measuring 1×1 m. Two species of starfish were found during the study in Pengudang village: Archaster typicus (73 individuals) and Protoreaster nodosus (14 individuals). The density of starfish found during research in Pengudang Village ranged from 700 to 13,700 individuals per hectare. Water quality conditions during the study were classified as good for supporting starfish life, with temperatures ranging from 29.7 to 31.3°C, current speeds from 0.055 to 0.076 m/s, salinity from 29.9 to 31.6 ppt, and dissolved oxygen from 6.82 to 7.66 mg/L.

Abstract

Striped catfish is a consumable fish with a good selling price and is a leading export commodity in Indonesia. Striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypopthalmus) often experience slow growth due to several factors that affect metabolic efficiency and nutrient intake. This study aims to determine the optimal dose of rabal probiotics to improve the growth and survival of catfish using a recirculation system. This study was conducted from April to June 2025 for 50 days at the Aquaculture Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Universitas Riau. The method used was an experiment with a completely randomized design (CRD), using four treatments (P1 = control, P2 = Rabal probiotic 30 ml/100g feed, P3 = Rabal probiotic 35 ml/100g feed, P4 = Rabal probiotic 40 ml/100g feed) and three replicates. The results showed that administering Rabal probiotics at different doses affected the growth and survival of P. hypophthalmus in including average weight and length growth, specific growth rate, feed efficiency, feed conversion ratio, and survival. The best treatment was found in treatment P4 (40 ml/100 g feed), which showed significant growth (P<0.05), namely absolute length of 3.72 cm, absolute weight of 6.74 g, specific growth rate of 2.08%, FCR value of 1.43, feed efficiency of 69.93%, and survival rate of 85%.

Abstract

Tiram Beach, located in Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra Province, is one of the coastal areas under environmental pressure from coastal abrasion. Abrasion leads to shoreline retreat and negative impacts on local socio-economic activities. This study aims to analyze the rate of coastal abrasion and sediment fractions at Tiram Beach over 20 years (2003–2023), and to identify the dominant sediment characteristics in the area. The research methods included analysis of Landsat satellite imagery (2003, 2013, and 2023). Results show that Tiram Beach has undergone consistent shoreline retreat, with abrasion rates ranging from 2.2 to 3.1 meters per year. The sediment is predominantly composed of coarse sand and gravel, classified as poorly sorted, with skewness values indicating a dominance of coarse particles in certain zones. Contributing factors to abrasion include high-energy waves from the Indian Ocean, strong coastal currents, and human activities such as tourism and coastal infrastructure development. In conclusion, coastal abrasion at Tiram Beach is significant and poses a threat to the sustainability of the coastal zone if left unmanaged. Mitigation measures such as the construction of coastal protection structures, rehabilitation of coastal vegetation, and integrated coastal spatial planning are recommended to reduce future impacts.

Abstract

ngroves are coastal ecosystems that play a very important ecological and economic role. This study aims to analyze mangrove species, density, and importance index. The method used was a survey method with the determination of research stations using purposive sampling, where the research location was divided into 3 stations based on criteria, namely station 1 mangrove forest located in Damai Village with relatively good mangrove conditions, station 2 mangrove forest located in Rukun Village which is a mangrove ecotourism area, and Station 3, a mangrove forest located in Murni Village, which is adjacent to a residential area. The results of water quality parameter measurements in Pangkalan Jambi Village showed salinity values of 19-22, pH values of 5.4-6.5, and temperatures of 29-30 ℃. Based on the study, five mangrove species were found in the mangrove forest area of Pangkalan Jambi Village: Rhizophora apiculata, Xylocarpus granatum, Nypa fruticans, Avicennia marina, and Talipariti. tiliaceum. The density in the tree category at station I had the highest density, 1566.66 ind/ha, while the lowest was at station II, 300 ind/ha. In the seedling category, the highest density was found at station I with a density value of 4800 ind/ha, while the lowest density was found at station II with a density value of 3466.67 ind/ha. In the seedling category, the highest density was found at station I with a density value of 7500 ind/ha, while the lowest density was found at station II with a density value of 5000 ind/ha. Based on the average Importance Value Index calculation, the highest INP value was R. apiculata at 249.295%, and the lowest was S. alba at 178.588%.

Abstract

The province of Riau has many freshwater bodies that play a very important role in the lives of the surrounding communities. This study aims to determine the relationship between chlorophyll a and Total-P (Total Phosphorus) concentrations, and to evaluate the trophic status of Lake Perupuk in Perhentian Raja District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. This study was conducted from October to December 2024 at three stations: Station 1 (estuary, without settlements), Station 2 (main lake area with fish cages), and Station 3 (estuary with settlements and agricultural activities). Sampling was carried out five times at one-week intervals at the surface and at a depth of 2 Secchi. The parameters measured included chlorophyll a, Total-P, temperature, transparency (Secchi depth), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), free carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrate. The results showed that chlorophyll a concentration ranged from 11.04 to 14.14 µg/L, with the highest value at Station 2 (14.14 µg/L) and the lowest at Station 1 (11.04 µg/L). Total-P concentrations ranged from 0.0168 to 0.0338 mg/L, following the same pattern: highest at Station 3 (0.0338 mg/L) and lowest at Station 1 (0.0168 mg/L). Simple regression analysis showed an insignificant relationship between Total-P and chlorophyll-a (R² = 0.0266–0.0774), indicating that, in mesotrophic waters, other factors, such as light and nitrogen availability, also affect chlorophyll-a concentrations. Based on chlorophyll a and Total-P concentrations, Lake Perupuk is categorized as a mesotrophic water body, with supporting parameters within the optimal range for aquatic organisms

Abstract

Aeromonas hydrophila is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause systemic disease and mass death. The disease caused by A. hydrophila bacteria is MAS (Motile Aeromonas Septicemia). One alternative treatment for A. hydrophila infection in fish is papaya seed extract (Carica papaya L.). This research was conducted from June 2024 to June 2025 at the Laboratory of Parasites and Fish Diseases, Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Universitas Riau. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibition zone of papaya seed extract, as seen from the inhibition zone formed in inhibiting the growth of A. hydrophila, and also to determine the best MIC dose that can inhibit the growth of A. hydrophila. As well as to get a safe dose by conducting LD50 tests of papaya seed extract within 24 hours against common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with immersion techniques. The research method used was the experimental method, using the Kirby-Bauer disc method and a 6 mm diameter blank disk, with 3 repetitions per treatment. The results of the research indicate that papaya seed extract can inhibit the growth of A. hydrophila bacteria at concentrations of 100% - 1%, with an average inhibition zone diameter of 9, 86-6.2 mm. The MIC (Minimum Inhibition Concentration) of papaya seed extract inhibits the growth of A. hydrophila at 3.5%, with an average bacterial colony count of 280 CFU/mL. The LD50 value of papaya seed extract against common carp with the immersion technique for 24 hours is at a concentration of 3.73%.

Abstract

Jungga acid (Citrus jambhiri L.) contains compounds such as limonene, flavonoids, and essential oils that have potential as natural antibacterial agents. This study was conducted from September 2024 to June 2025 at the Parasite and Fish Disease Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Universitas Riau. The objective of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of jungga lime against Aeromonas hydrophila and to determine the MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration). The methods used were experimental, employing the disk diffusion technique (Kirby-Bauer) to measure the clear zone and dilution methods (turbidity test and total plate count) to determine the MIC. The treatments consisted of jungga lime concentrations ranging from 100% to 1%, with a positive control using the antibiotic Oxytetracycline. Each treatment was repeated three times. The results showed that Jungga lime could inhibit the growth of A. hydrophila at concentrations ranging from 100% to 1%, with clear zone diameters of 13.93 mm to 6.56 mm. The best MIC value for inhibiting the growth of A. hydrophila was 0.6% (285 CFU/mL). It can be concluded that Jungga lime has potential as a natural antibacterial agent for controlling diseases in farmed fish

Abstract

Black cumin oil (Nigella sativa) is a natural ingredient that contains various bioactive compounds, including thymoquinone, flavonoids, and essential fatty acids, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulating effects. In the field of aquaculture, the use of black cumin oil as a feed supplement is being developed due to its potential in improve the growth performance and immune system of farmed fish. This article aims to systematically review research on the application of black cumin oil in aquaculture, focusing on improving fish growth rate and immune response. Based on a literature review, it was found that N. sativa supplementation in oil form in various fish species, such as Oncorhynchus mykiss, Clarias gariepinus, Oreochromis niloticus, and Anabas testudineus, was able to improve growth, feed conversion ratio, as well as immunological parameters such as phagocytic activity, immunoglobulin levels, and resistance to infection.
