Abstract

The book al-Wāridāt al-Ilāhiyyah fī al-Tafsīr ‘alā Ṭarīqati al-Ṣūfiyyah bi al-Isyārah wa Ṣarīḥ al-‘Ibārah by Muhammad al-Bayṭār is a Sufi interpretation of the Qur’an that has received limited attention in academic studies, especially concerning the meanings of creation (al-khalq), humanity (al-insāniyyah), and prophethood (al-nubuwwah). This study aims to explore how these three concepts are interpreted within a Sufi framework. The method used was a qualitative literature-based study with an ishārī interpretation approach and thematic analysis. The primary source is the 2005 printed edition by Dār al-Kitāb al-‘Arabī, focusing on selected sections (wāridāt) that convey spiritual symbolism. The findings show that creation in this tafsir is viewed as a process of tajallī (divine manifestation), positioning humans as mirrors of the cosmos. Humanity is portrayed as a spiritual journey toward the knowledge of God (ma‘rifah), while prophethood represents the highest form of human perfection (insān kāmil), particularly as embodied in the figures of Prophet Adam and Prophet Muhammad. This tafsir is structured thematically and blends philosophical Sufism with Qur’anic symbolism. The study concludes that the book al-Wāridāt al-Ilāhiyyah deserves recognition as an important reference in Sufi exegesis. It contributes to enriching alternative approaches to understanding the Qur’an and encourages further philological and comparative studies of the work within the context of contemporary Qur’anic scholarship.

Abstract

Modern society, oriented solely towards worldly achievements, experiences inner emptiness, emotional instability, and a crisis of self-awareness. This is caused by a misunderstanding of the world’s nature. The Qur'an clearly states that the world is only a means and an intermediary to achieve true life, namely the hereafter. This paper examines the concept of the transience of the world in QS al-Kahf [18] 45 through the interpretation of al-Qurṭubī, which describes the world as a metaphor for rainwater that grows plants, then dries up and is destroyed by the wind. Using a descriptive-analytical approach and library research methods, this study explores the linguistic meaning and classical interpretations, linking them to the modern human need to cultivate self-awareness and mindfulness. The study shows that al-Qurṭubī identifies five reasons why the world is likened to water: its changeable, temporary, impermanent nature, its trials, and its capacity to contain both benefits and harm. These findings emphasize the importance of placing the world in proportion, not as the ultimate goal, but as a means to eternal happiness, so that fostering self-awareness and mindfulness in society is reflected in actions such as social awareness, the application of Islamic mindfulness in daily life, ecological awareness, and mental resilience that guide humans to live more consciously, balanced, and oriented towards spiritual meaning, not merely material achievements. The implication is that the Qur'anic concept of the transience of the world can be combined with modern psychological perspectives to enhance mental health, promote self-awareness, and cultivate full presence in daily life.

Abstract

The complexity of modern life has generated profound psychological, social, and spiritual pressures that require a multidisciplinary response. This article analyzes the interrelation between the Islamic concept of tawakal and the philosophy of Stoicism, focusing on both their conceptual foundations and practical implications. Using a literature review method, the study examines relevant books, scholarly articles, and academic works. The findings reveal significant intersections between tawakal and Stoicism, particularly in the principles of self-control, acceptance of what lies beyond human power, and cultivating composure in the face of adversity. While tawakkul is grounded in theological submission to God and Stoicism in rationality and virtue, both can be integrated into a spiritual-philosophical framework that strengthens personal resilience. This study introduces the notion of the “Stoic Muslim” as an integrative model that combines maximum effort, spiritual surrender, and rational emotional regulation. The primary contribution of this research lies in advancing multidisciplinary Islamic scholarship by creating a dialogue between Islamic theology, Western philosophy, and modern psychology. Nevertheless, the study remains limited due to its reliance on theoretical analysis without empirical validation. Future research is recommended to employ qualitative or quantitative methods—such as case studies, in-depth interviews, or psychological surveys—to test the applicability of integrating tawakal and Stoicism in contemporary contexts. Such an approach may provide a more practical framework for enhancing spirituality and psychological resilience in addressing the challenges of modern life.

Abstract

The worsening environmental crisis has become a global concern, necessitating in-depth studies from various perspectives, including those from a religious perspective. This research aims to examine the environmental crisis through the lens of ecological exegesis of QS. al-Rūm [30]: 41 by referring to several classical and contemporary tafsīr. QS. al-Rūm [30]: 41 highlights the destruction of land and sea caused by human actions, yet it is often understood only textually without exploring its ecological implications. This study aims to interpret the verse through an ecological exegesis approach, comparing and analyzing the views of classical and contemporary exegetes to uncover the concept of environmental degradation, along with its theological and practical implications. Thus, Qur’anic values can serve as a foundation for Islamic ecological ethics in responding to the global environmental crisis in a sustainable manner. Employing a qualitative method and library research, data from classical and contemporary tafsīr are thoroughly examined to understand the meaning of the verse. The findings show that QS. al-Rūm [30]: 41 contains both theological messages and practical guidance for humanity to restore its relationship with nature. These noble values can be implemented through a simple and moderate lifestyle, the strengthening of environmental protection regulations, and the development of environmentally friendly technologies. Through these concrete steps, humankind can preserve the sustainability and balance of the earth for future generations.

Abstract

This study examines social solidarity in Islam, focusing on taʿāwun (mutual assistance) as articulated in the hadith and analyzed through Robert D. Putnam’s social capital theory. Contemporary Muslim societies face increasing individualism and weakening communal cohesion, while the practical application of the Prophet’s guidance on mutual help remains limited. Although previous studies have addressed Islamic social ethics and social capital separately, a gap persists in linking authentic hadith sources with systematic social science frameworks to explain community cohesion. This research employs a qualitative library-based methodology, drawing on primary data from canonical hadith collections, including Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and Sunan Abī Dāwūd, supported by relevant scholarly literature. Data analysis proceeded in three stages: textual analysis (ʿIlm al-Maʿānī al-Ḥadīth), intertextual thematic analysis, and contextual-social analysis using Putnam’s social capital framework. The findings reveal that hadiths on mutual assistance consistently embed key social capital elements, including trust (al-thiqah), reciprocity (al-muʿāwānah), norms (al-qawāʿid/al-aʿdāb), and networks (al-shabākāt/al-ʿalāqāt), within an ethical and spiritual framework, enhancing collective action, community resilience, and social cohesion. Unlike secular theories, Islamic social capital integrates moral and spiritual dimensions, providing a sustainable mechanism for enduring social solidarity. Conceptually, this study contributes by integrating Islamic teachings with social capital theory, offering a systematic analytical tool to understand the mechanisms of cohesion and sustainability in Muslim communities.

Abstract

Western scholars’ studies on the historicity of the Qur’an have been ongoing since the 12th century to the present day. In their development, some of these studies tend to undermine Islam by employing source criticism and tradition criticism to cast doubt on the authenticity of the Qur’an in early Islamic history. This article aims to examine the debate between revisionist-skeptical and academic-dialogical groups regarding the historicity of the Qur’an. Using qualitative-descriptive methods and critical data analysis, this article finds that studies conducted by revisionist-skeptical scholars such as Abraham Geiger and John Wansbrough view the Qur’an as an imitative text of previous texts and parallel to the Hadith. However, the studies of these revisionist-skeptical scholars are countered by Angelika Neuwirth and Fred M. Donner, as part of the academic-dialogical group. They reject and refute this view by pointing out methodological weaknesses and ideological biases that lead to erroneous conclusions by the revisionists. It is due to initial assumptions based on a negative perspective and a polemical-apologetic attitude towards Islam. They offer a more open and positive approach to Islam. The theoretical implications of these two major schools of thought demonstrate that the initial paradigm for viewing the Qur’an significantly influences the results and direction of research. This article contributes to enriching the study of Orientalism by opening up a more objective, constructive, and relevant scientific dialogue for the development of Qur’anic studies in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study analyzes the power relations between Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as the majority group and the adherents of Sapta Darma as a minority in Lamongan Regency, specifically in Kalitengah Subdistrict, Mungli Village. Using Michel Foucault’s power relations theory, this phenomenological qualitative study examines how NU’s dominant religious discourse, constructed through the Qur’an, hadith, fiqh via Baḥth al-Masā’il, and kitab kuning, functions as an instrument of power to shape the practices and identities of the Sapta Darma community. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with thirteen key informants from both groups and twelve months of field observation. The findings indicate that power relations are productive and relational, in which NU establishes dominant norms that define the boundaries of tolerance, while Sapta Darma adapts socially without relinquishing the core of its beliefs. Foucault’s mechanisms of power are manifested through subtle oversight by NU elites and state institutions, alongside internalization of norms by Sapta Darma, creating self-regulation. The study concludes that social harmony in Mungli is built upon an uneven power structure, where the minority remains vulnerable despite formal recognition. The contribution of this research lies in providing a nuanced understanding of local religious majority-minority power dynamics, offering insights for policymakers and scholars to design inclusive strategies that enhance tolerance and respect for religious diversity.

Abstract

QS al-Ḥujurāt [49]:13 is frequently invoked in discussions of ethical equality, particularly amid contemporary tensions involving race, class, and identity. Despite its prominence, studies that examine how the concept of taqwa is systematically constructed as a normative foundation for egalitarianism remain limited. This gap frames the present inquiry. Employing a qualitative library-based approach, the study applies thematic exegesis and comparative analysis to Anwār al-Tanzīl and Taysīr al-Karīm al-Raḥmān. The analysis proceeds through mapping the exegetical arguments, identifying hermeneutical divergences, and synthesizing their social and conceptual implications. Findings indicate that al-Bayḍāwī conceptualizes taqwa through a filological lens while simultaneously critiquing hierarchical Arab social structures, positioning taqwa as a theological mechanism that nullifies genealogical prestige and affirms the equality of human origins. In contrast, al-Saʿdī foregrounds the social dimension of taqwa as an ethical orientation that regulates interaction, strengthens solidarity, and curbs group dominance in plural societies. These differing emphases reveal a conceptual shift from taqwa as a spiritual category to a moral principle operative within social life. The study contributes a conceptual framework linking taqwa and egalitarianism and offers an interdisciplinary vantage point for contemporary justice-oriented scholarship.
