Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at describing the types of maxim violated in humorous verbal cartoon in Kompas, to find out the type of the maxims that is dominantly violated in it and to find out the causes. The method of research is descriptive qualitative research. The data is analyzed by interpreting the conversations and analyzing them based on the types of the maxim violated. From the data, it was found that the violation of the maxim of quality is 12 (20.33%), the violation of the maxim of quantity is 25 (42.37%), the violation of manner is 15 (25.42%), and the violation of the maxim of relevance is 7 (11.86%). The frequency and the percentage shows that maxim of quantity is the dominant type of maxim which is violated.   Key words: cooperative principle, maxim, cartoon, humor

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to investigate deixis found in the articles of Inside Sumatera Magazine, especially in Adventure, Destination and Travelling coloums. It was conducted to discover the types of deixis as proposed by Cruse (2000) namely: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The objectives of this study is to describe type of deixis and to find out the most dominant type of deixis in articles of Inside Sumatera magazine. This study was taken from the article of Inside sumatera magazine and ten article are taken as the samples. Documentary technique is due in collecting data. The findings show that the total number of deixis from the whole articles were 1504 occurrences, 656 occurrences (43.62%) was person deixis, 465 occurrences (30.92%) was place deixis, 227 occurrences (15.09%) was time deixis, 137 occurrences (9.10%) was discourse deixis, and 19 occurrences (1.27%) was social deixis. Abstract

ABSTRACT One aim of this article is to show through concrete examples about how Illocutionary Force used in Novel Darkest Hour By Cleo Virginia Andrews. The research are to describe the six types of illocutionary force in Cleo Virginia Andrews’s Darkest Hour to derive the most dominant type of illocutionary force, to explain the meaning of illocutionary force and to analyze the implication of that dominant the six types of illocutionary force to the novel itself. This study applied descriptive qualitative method.  They were taken randomly and found 108 the types of illocutionary force; Asserting   (21,29 %), Promising  (13,89 %), Excomunicating ( 12,04%), Exclaiming in pain (15,74 %), Inquiring (11,11 %), and Ordering (25,92%) occurs in the novel. It was found that the most dominant type of illocutionary force that is used in Cleo Virginia Andrews’s Darkest Hour is Ordering for expressing what the speaker wants (25,92%).  This implies that the Ordering for expressing what the speaker wants play a great role in the novel. It means that wishes as expression of speaker’s desire or wants in order to expect it becomes    a reality can be characteristic of the novel in case of applying order to express of Illocutionary Force within utterances. Abstract

ABSTRACT This article deals with types of process in Pitbull’s song lyrics. The objectives of this article is to find the types of process in Pitbull’s song lyrics, the dominant process in Pitbull’s song lyrics, and to investigate the implication of dominant process with hedonictics life style. Fiftheen songs were taken as the data and analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. The findings of this article showed that six types of process are found in the Pitbull’s song lyrics. The most dominant process was mental process, it implied that the songs lyrics in Pitbull’s song expressed hedonistics life style which are dealing with the process of sensing which covering thinking, feeling, and emotions which happened inside human beings.   Keywords: process, song, Pitbull, descriptive qualitative, hedonistics

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts Improving The Students’ Achievement In Writing Descriptive Paragraphs By Applying  Think-Talk-Write Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA 1 SMA PARULIAN 1 Medan that consists of 28 students. The data of this study were obtained quantitatively through writing test which shows that the range of students who got score 75 to up is 92.85% and qualitatively from interview sheets, diary notes and observation sheets. Based on the diary notes, observation sheets and interview sheets, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic and interested in writing. The result of research showed that the Think-talk-write Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. It is suggested that teachers should use Think-talk-write strategy to improving students’ writing especially in writing descriptive paragraph. Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to find out the five types of illocutionary acts, namely: Directive, Commisives, Expressive, Assertive, Declarative and the dominant one used in Transformers”Dark of the Moon”. This research was conducted by using quantitative descriptive design. It took 735 utterances taken from the subtitle of Transformers “Dark of the Moon” which were released in June 29, 2011. The result of analyzing found five types of process were used in Transformers “Dark of the Moon”, they were: Directive, Commisive, Expressive, Assertive and Declarative. There were 735 illocutionary acts in 735 utterances. The findings of data analysis showed that the total numbers of process from the five types of illocutionary acts were: Directive is 361 (47,94%) utterances. The total number of Commisive  is 39 (5,17%) utterances. The total number of Expressive is 58 (7,70%) utterances. The total number of Assertives is 294 (39,04%). And the total number of Declaratives is 1 (0,13%). It means that Directive is the most dominant type of Illocutionary Acts used in Transformers “Dark of the Moon” movie.
