Abstract

ABSTRACT This study dealt with Conversational Implicature in Inception Movie Dialogue. The objectives of this study were to find out the most dominant types of Conversational Implicature and the meaning of each implicature. This research on this thesis wasconducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were taken from Inception movie script that was released in 2010. The data were analyzed and classified into two types of conversational implicature in the procedures namely Generalized Conversational Implicature and Particularized Conversational Implicature.There were 36 conversational implicatures occured in the characters dialogue from Inception movie. The findings indicated that there were Generalized Conversational Implicature 21 (58,33%) and Particularized Conversational Implicature 15 (41,67%). Generalized Conversational Implicature as the most dominant type of conversational implicaturewas used in Inception movie, it means that most of the dialogue could be drawn from linguistic feature and general fact without considering the context.   Keywords:Conversational implicature, Generalized conversational implicature, Particularized conversational implicature

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of illocutionary act usedin Karate Kid’s Movie. The objectives of the study were to discover the dominant illocutionary act and to implicate for the use dominant illocutionary act in movie. The data were the transcript of Dre Parker’s utterances which were downloaded from internet.This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The findings showed that there were 220 utterances which contained 4 types of illocutionary act. Dre Parker tended to use the representative (54, 55%), directive (34, 50%), expressive (8, 18%),and commissive (2, 72%). The most dominant type of illocutionary act was representativebecause he mainly used the statement of arguing, asserting, informing and describing. Abstract

This research focused on communicative functions used in Ulaon Pogu ni Alaman in Exhumation (Mangongkal Holi) at funeral ceremony in Toba Batak. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the transcript utterances of Ulaon Pogu ni Alaman at funeral ceremony in Toba Batak. The findings of the study show that there are 100 utterances which consist of six communicative functions which is referential, emotive, poetic, conative, phatic, and metalinguistic. The most dominant type of communicative functions used in Ulaon Pogu ni Alaman in Exhumation (Mangongkal Holi) at funeral ceremony in Toba Batak is referential function. It means that the communication used in Ulaon Pogu ni Alaman intended to establish the description and contextual information that happened on that day. Keywords: communicative functions; Batak Toba; funeral ceremony; Ulaon Pogu ni Alaman.

Abstract

This study deals with Speech Acts used in Sydney White movie’s dialogue. Thepurpose of this study was to find out the types of speech acts based on GeorgeYule’s theory and to find out which types were dominant in the dialogue.Character that to be analyzed was Sydney White’s utterance. Sydney White wasthe main character in “Sydney White” movie. The research was conducted byusing descriptive qualitative approach. There were five types of speech acts inSydney White movie script. They were 7 Declarations (1.97%), 120Representatives (33.89%), 93 Expressives (26.27%), 125 Directives (35.33%),and 9 Commisives with the total percentage of 2.54%. The findings of this studyshowed that Directives was the dominantly used in this movie. There were 125(35.33%) utterances that uttered by the main character namely Sydney White in“Sydney White” movie. Directive was the dominantly used in the moviebecause Directives uttered when the main character intends to give commands,orders, requests, suggestion, warning, permitting, urging, questioning, advising,begging, challenging.

Abstract

Abstract One aim of this article is to show through a concrete example how illocutionary acts used in One Piece comic. The illustrative example is taken from the utterances of One Piece comic. Central to the analysis proper form of utterances in One Piece comic that contain of illocutionary acts; i.e. representative, directive, commissive, expressive, declarative. 90 utterances were interpreted by actor, and it was found that the use of iilocutionary acts.   Keywords: Comic One Piece, Luffy’s Utterances, Illocutionary Acts

Abstract

This study deals with The Sexism in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This study was aimed as analyzing the types of sexist language that was consisted in the story of the novel Pride and Prejudice and to show the discrimination of sex in the novel Pride and Prejudice. This research used qualitative research. The data was taken from the sentences in the novel Pride and Prejudice. The research deals with the theory which was conducted by Janet Holmes (2001), where she said there were three types of sexist language. There were three types of sexist language found in the novel Pride and Prejudice, they were English Metaphors (10,60 %), Marked and Unmarked (89,02 %), and Generalization (0,38 %). It was find that the Marked and Unmarked (89,02 %) dominantly used in the novel Pride and Prejudice to shows that there are discrimination, especially found in women side as the discriminated sex in the novel Pride and Prejudice.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on semiotic used in A Mild Go Ahead. The aims are to find the use of semiotic and identify the meaning in A Mild Go Ahead.The data werethree television advertisements from A Mild Go Ahead entitled “Satu Aksi = Segalanya, We Are One and Free, and Orang Pemimpi. The researchwas conducted by using descriptive qualitative research.The findings show that there were three elements of semiotic used, such as representamen (qualisign, sinsign, legisign), object (icon, index, symbol), and interpretant (rheme, decisign, argument),which then devided into 9 types of semiotic;Qualisign (0),Legisign (9), Sinsign (34), Icon (12), Index (27), Symbol (4), Rheme (9), Decisign (19) and Argument (16). The most dominant type of semiotic in the advertisements is sinsign, and it means that A Mild Go Aheadpersuade their audiences by showing the real example of their products. Abstract

This study deals with Conversational Moves in Ace Ventura Movie. The purpose of the study is to find out the moves are played by the main character of Ace Ventura movie 1st series, describing how the moves are played by the characters of Ace Ventura movie 1st series and to find out the reason why the Moves are played in the way it is. The data were analyzed based on the Structure of interaction theory by Martin (1992). The analysis showed the moves are played by the main character of Ace Ventura Movie are K1 (primary knower) 37,9 %, K2 (secondary knower) 21,07 %, K1f (primary knower follow-up) 4,64 %, K2f (secondary knower follow-up)13,6 %, A1 (primary actor) 3.2 %, A2 (secondary actor) 7,14 %, A1f (primary actor follow-up) 0,35 %, A2f (secondary actor follow-up), Da1 (delay primary actor) 0,35 %, Bch (backchannel) 0,35 %, Cl (clarification) 0,35 %, Cf (confirmation) 3,2 %, Rcf (response to confirmation) 4,64 % and Ch (challenging) 0,71 %. The moves that are played by the characters is dynamic because the speakers on that dialogue staged clarification, confirmation, back-channel and challenging move on the dialogue.Keywords: ConversationalMoves, Dynamics of Exchange.

Abstract

The writer was found the result of this study about Terms of Address in Pesisir Barus Notrth Sumatera Kecamatan Barus, Kabupaten Tapanuli Tengah. this study aims to determine the kinds and factors of using Address Terms in Pesisir Barus community. And the data use by applying descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. The source of data was taken from the interviewing, video, recording and conversation in community. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research based on Wardaugh’s. The result of this reserach was kinds, factors and function in Pesisir Barus Community. The most dominant kinds the terns of address are used by pesisir barus community is RT (62 times), the most dominant rarely used by pesisir barus community is KT (56 times), PN (16 times), FN (11 times), and MT (2 times), IT (4 times) is seldom used by Pesisir Barus Community. There are four kinds factors and function of the terns of address in Pesisir Barus Community can be divided as G (Gender), A (Age), FR (Family Relationship). R (Respect). With the total factors of address terms used by Pesisir Barus Community was analysis G (27 times), A (28 times), FR (36 times), R (60 times).

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the cultural values in song lyrics Endeng- endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. The objectives of this study were : (1) to find out the types of cultural values in song lyrics Endeng- endeng, (2) to find out the dominant types that used in song lyrics Endeng-endeng and (3) how the realization of the cultural values in wedding ceremony of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. There were 18 data of cultural values that were taken from song lyrics Endeng-endeng transcriptions. The findings of this research were : (1) There were nine cultural values of Batak that found in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, that contained kinship (16.7%), religion (16.7%), hagabeon (extended family)(11.1%), hasangapon (respect) (11.1%), hamoraon (wealth) (5.5%), hamajuon (modernization) (11.1%), patik dohot uhum (rules and laws) (11.1%), pangayoman (nurture) (5.5%) marsisarian (conflict) (11.1%). (2) The most dominant types of cultural value was kinship and religion (16.7%). (3) The realization of cultural values of song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency was described by interview the informants that understood about Endeng-endeng. The meanings in song lyrics Endeng- endeng were the advices for the groom that should be applied by them in their life after got marriage.
