Abstract

The rapid growth of digital financial services presents new opportunities for enhancing cross-border trade and financial inclusion in Africa. This study aims to examine how fintech adoption can empower small businesses and improve cross-border payment systems within a community-based service framework. This community service initiative employed a Community-Based Research approach involving 30 participants, including small business actors, policymakers, and fintech practitioners across Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Rwanda, and South Africa. The program consisted of participatory training, technical assistance, and continuous mentoring. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and participatory evaluation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that 83% of participants experienced improved transaction efficiency, while 76% reported increased access to financial services. Transaction costs decreased from 9.0% to 3.8% (57.78% reduction), and transaction time improved from 2–5 days to less than 24 hours, with 65% achieving real-time transactions. Additionally, 72% of participants reported increased confidence, and 68% reduced reliance on intermediaries. Challenges remain, including regulatory barriers (73%), limited internet access (60%), and low digital literacy (55%). The study confirms that fintech adoption significantly enhances operational efficiency, financial inclusion, and community empowerment. These findings align with key theoretical frameworks, including financial inclusion theory, transaction cost theory, and diffusion of innovation. However, structural challenges such as regulatory fragmentation and digital inequality must be addressed to ensure long-term sustainability. The study highlights the importance of integrating technological innovation with community-based approaches to achieve inclusive and sustainable economic development.

Abstract

Despite national macroeconomic efforts to improve Nigeria's Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) through regulatory reforms and digital infrastructure investments, economic formalization remains inconsistent at the grassroots level. This stagnation is largely due to a significant gap in digital literacy and the underutilization of e-governance tools by micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs). This community service project aimed to bridge this macro-micro divide by operationalizing digital infrastructure to empower local SMEs through targeted digital capacity building. Utilizing a Community-Based Service Learning (CBSL) approach, the project integrated academic frameworks with practical community intervention. The program engaged 150 SME owners in Kano State, Nigeria. The intervention comprised a three-day intensive technical workshop followed by a one-month, one-on-one mentorship phase. Training focused on navigating online government business registration portals and integrating mobile digital payment systems. Program efficacy was evaluated utilizing pre- and post-intervention surveys alongside qualitative participant observations. The CBSL intervention yielded significant, measurable improvements in digital adoption and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Post-intervention data indicated that 82% of participants successfully registered their enterprises online, compared to a baseline where only 18% possessed basic portal navigation skills. Additionally, the cohort demonstrated a 65% increase in the active adoption of mobile digital payment applications. Qualitatively, participants reported a 90% increase in confidence regarding regulatory compliance and formal business administration.

Abstract

Indonesia's high vulnerability to natural disasters significantly impacts the psychological well-being of school-age children. While teachers play a strategic role in the recovery process, they often lack specialized psychosocial training. This community service aimed to enhance teachers' capacity to provide post-disaster child support by integrating resilience-building techniques with Toraja culture-based animated media. The Participatory Action Research (PAR) program was conducted at SDN 3 Buntao, involving 15 active teachers. The activity consisted of three systematic stages: preparation, implementation, and reflection. The implementation stage included presentations on fundamental resilience concepts, mentoring simulations, and hands-on practice in developing interactive animated videos using the Interacty application. The training resulted in a significant improvement in participants' understanding of identifying children's trauma symptoms and delivering appropriate emotional support, marked by a 75% increase in teacher confidence. Teachers successfully developed practical skills to produce culturally tailored animations and interactive quizzes. Integrating Toraja cultural elements into the digital media provided a highly positive impact, accelerating emotional closeness and making the psychosocial support more relatable for the students. This capacity-building initiative effectively empowered educators to deliver structured post-disaster psychological support. By combining evidence-based resilience strategies with culturally responsive digital tools, the training strengthens teachers' readiness to facilitate sustainable and engaging psychosocial recovery in the classroom.

Abstract

Rural communities in Indonesia frequently face limited access to high-quality Islamic education due to geographical distance and financial constraints. This community service programme addresses these barriers by optimising local resources at Rumah Tahfidz Zhillaalul Qur’an in Solok Regency to enhance Qur’anic and Arabic literacy through an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The methodology commenced with asset mapping, identifying 3 highly qualified local educators. Data was triangulated through participatory observations of 45 active students, in-depth interviews with 15 local stakeholders, and online surveys completed by 120 prospective nationwide learners, alongside continuous social media analytics across 4 digital platforms. The implementation integrated offline and online learning models across four developmental stages. The optimisation of local expertise successfully strengthened existing programmes, significantly improving the recitation quality (makhārij al-ḥurūf and tartīl) of the 45 students. Digital innovation effectively expanded institutional outreach, directly facilitating the evidence-based development of three new hybrid initiatives: online adult tahfidz-tahsin, offline Arabic language instruction for local youth, and nationwide online Arabic courses. The findings demonstrate that synergising the ABCD approach with hybrid learning models provides a sustainable and replicable framework for rural Islamic education. The programme not only enhanced religious literacy but also fostered a paradigm shift, proving that high-quality religious education can be locally based, affordable, and highly effective in transforming communities from dependent recipients to empowered agents.

Abstract

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a strategic role in driving economic growth and improving community welfare in Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Province. However, low levels of financial literacy remain a major obstacle for MSME actors, especially concerning business financial management, transaction recording, and effective financial decision-making. This community service activity adopted a Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology, conducted as a collaborative training intervention involving the Association of Indonesian Accounting Lecturers (ADAI) and the Belitung Regency Government. The program was attended by 159 participants, including MSME partners, local residents, and regional leaders. The implementation consisted of four systematic stages namely preparation, counseling on simple financial management, interactive discussion and mentoring, and an evaluation utilizing pre-tests and post-tests. The intervention yielded a highly positive response and a measurable improvement in financial management knowledge. Evaluation results demonstrated that the average pre-test score of 44.25% increased sharply to 79.50% in the post-test. This reflects a significant average knowledge increase of 35.25%, successfully bridging the initial gap between passive theoretical knowledge and practical business application. The community-based education effectively raised MSME actors' awareness regarding the importance of financial literacy for making sound, sustainable business decisions. This enhanced capacity provides a strong foundation for better financial choices and supports local economic development. To maximize future community empowerment efforts, providing continuous post-training assistance and integrating user-friendly digital technology for financial record-keeping are highly recommended.
