Abstract

As one of the most popular forms of cultural production, film does not merely function as entertainment for society but also serves as a medium for highlighting social issues that have occurred or are currently unfolding within it. One Russian film that raises such social issues is Chelovek, kotoryj Udivil Vsekh (The Man Who Surprised Everyone), which implicitly addresses gender equality in modern Russian society. This study examines the representation of equality between women and men within the domestic sphere and how it relates to social realities in contemporary Russia. The theories of gender equilibrium and feminism, along with character analysis, are employed to analyze the issues in the lives of Egor and Natalya. The findings demonstrate that the idea of equality in spousal roles can be conveyed, with the hope of contributing to a shift in the reality of household life in Russia toward a new condition in which husbands and wives hold equal positions within the family.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the boycott by Indonesian fans against the K-pop group ATEEZ as part of the dynamics of South Korea’s cultural diplomacy in Southeast Asia. Building on the understanding of K-pop as an important instrument of soft power in South Korea’s cultural diplomacy strategy, this research highlights how regional audiences do not always passively accept such practices. Using a qualitative approach with digital discourse analysis, the study analyzes boycott-related discourses circulating on social media and in online news coverage to explore the narratives, meanings, and cultural implications of this action. The fan boycott is not merely an expression of emotional disappointment, but a form of fan activism constructed through narratives of fan contribution, regional inequality, and demands for symbolic recognition. Through digital media, Indonesian fans position themselves as non-state actors with agency in negotiating cultural relations with the K-pop industry. These findings reveal the limitations of cultural diplomacy that relies solely on global market logic and underscore that the effectiveness of soft power depends on the quality of fair and inclusive relationships with regional audiences. This study is expected to contribute to the field of cultural diplomacy by positioning Southeast Asian audiences as active subjects in the negotiation of soft power through popular culture.

Abstract

This study examines the subtitling strategies used in translating Korean terms of address into Indonesian, with a focus on how sociocultural meanings embedded in Korean address systems are conveyed in the target language. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyses a corpus of dialogue excerpts taken from two Korean drama series. The findings identify seven categories of address terms: proper names, occupational titles, kinship terms, common nouns, attention-getters, pronouns, and child name-derived forms. Proper names are the most frequent category, followed by occupational titles, kinship terms, common nouns, and attention-getters, whereas pronouns and child name-based forms occur less frequently. This distribution reflects the Korean sociolinguistic preference for personalized and hierarchical forms of address that signal respect, familiarity, and social harmony. The analysis reveals six main subtitling strategies: borrowing, substitution, literal translation, explicitation, omission, and compensation. The results indicate that translating Korean terms of address requires sensitivity to sociocultural context and audiovisual constraints. These findings highlight the importance of context-sensitive decision-making in achieving pragmatic and cultural equivalence in audiovisual translation.

Abstract

It is known that proverbs have existed for a long time, but today researchers have identified many proverbs, especially those that use animal symbolism, and these proverbs are being republished on social media. This study aims to analyze the meanings and origins of these proverbs so that we can understand the context of their current use on social media. The research was conducted using a qualitative method with an in-depth semantic approach. Data were collected through social media research techniques, drawing from YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. The findings indicate that animal symbols in Arabic proverbs contain both negative and positive elements. The use of animal symbolism in Arabic proverbs on social media is mostly intended to offer advice, while others depict human behavior in contexts such as satire, criticism, praise, and mockery.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the humanitarian crisis and popular resistance in the poetry of Sudanese demonstrators, drawing on the documentary film Sudan, Remember Us (2024) by Hind Meddeb. Using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzes data that have been recontextualized through social media. The results show the use of dehumanizing lexicon (lāji'an, mumazzaqan) and hyperbolic metaphors to depict the suffering of the Sudanese people. The poetry employs intertextuality with the story of the Prophet Job to morally legitimize the victims, and is distributed through social media platforms. At the macro level, this poetry functions as a counter-discourse to deconstruct military hegemony and challenge international compassion fatigue. This phenomenon demonstrates digital poetry as an important space of resistance for oppressed groups to maintain human dignity.

Abstract

This article discusses how legal discourse related to PACS in France reflects and shapes social norms and values that develop in society, particularly in relation to the existence of the mariage pour tous law which was passed fourteen years after the PACS was passed. Both laws were passed by the French government aimed at heterosexual and homosexual couples in order to create equal rights for its citizens. The purpose of this study is to show PACS in France and its relationship to changing social norms, particularly after the passage of the mariage pour tous law in 2013. The theory used in this study is the Critical Discourse Analysis theory by Norman Fairclough which is divided into three dimensions, namely the textual dimension, the discourse dimension and the socio-cultural dimension. In addition, this study uses the concept of individualization by François de Singly. The data used are PACS law number 99-944 dated November 15, 1999 and the official government website. The results of this study indicate that the presence of mariage pour tous which is considered as the answer to the acceptance of all types of couples, both heterosexual and homosexual couples, in fact, the individual, economic, and flexibility values in PACS are still an option for couples who live together today, especially for those who live in big cities, college graduates, and young couples.

Abstract

This article analyses the cultural connectivity between India and Java from the first century to the tenth century CE. The primary method employed is chronological synchronisation, namely the alignment of political events in India with the emergence and development of kingdoms in Java, combined with a multidisciplinary approach drawing on epigraphic, archaeological, and historical data. The analysis identifies four stages of connectivity. The earliest stage, spanning the first to the third century CE, is marked by maritime trade and early encounters between Austronesian sailors and Indian traders, evidenced by Indian Rouletted Ware pottery found in the Buni cultural complex and at Sembiran. The next stage, from the fourth to the sixth century CE, corresponds to the decline of the Gupta Empire following Hūṇa invasions and the rise of the Tārumānagara Kingdom in western Java under King Pūrṇawarman. The following stage, from the seventh to the eighth century CE, is characterised by the Pallava-Cālukya rivalry in South India alongside the growth of the Holing Kingdom and religious architecture on the Dieng Plateau and its surroundings. The culminating stage, from the ninth to the tenth century CE, demonstrates reciprocal relations between the Pala Dynasty in Bengal and the Sailendra Dynasty in Java, evidenced by the Nālandā Copper-Plate that records the construction of a Buddhist monastery by Maharaja Balaputradeva in the Nālandā complex with the support of King Devapaladeva. This study argues that political dynamics on the Indian subcontinent constituted a push factor for elite migration to Java, while local communities played an active role as both recipients and developers of Indian cultural elements. At its peak, the India-Java relationship evolved into a reversed flow in the form of religious patronage from Java to India, demonstrating that this connectivity was not a one-way relationship but rather a mutually enriching dialogue of cultures.
