Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Keroncong” music, as a treasure of Indonesian national music, has been experiencing a long phase since the arrival of the Moorish as Portuguese slaves to Indonesia in the 16th century. In the long period, the “keroncong” music then, as other kinds of traditional music, has to face industry music, especially Western music. The power of financial capital, the superiority of technology, and the sophistication of marketing ground down traditional music. This paper tries to analyze the “keroncong” music in Indonesia that can still be maintained or popularized through various ways and by making a proper media of promotion such as through television and radio so that society are familiar to “keroncong” music. Therefore, “keroncong” artists should make innovations or changes that can attract people’s interest to “keroncong” music. They should create song lyrics that reflec the life of society or take themes that is in accordance to their period. Although there are many new “keroncong” compositions, but the new “keroncong” songs are rarely published in media. The emergence of “campursari” in the 1990s, pioneered by Manthous, brought a power of interest and became a magnet for fans and activists of “keroncong” and traditional music so that they appreciate the music and many groups of “campursari” music which is rooted from “keroncong” grew. The same effort was done by Didi Kempot and Koko Thole who has given new colour to “keroncong” music. They made efforts to spread “keroncong” music to a wide range of society and also develop the music itself.      KEY WORDS: “Keroncong” music, time of revolution, Indonesian society, “campursari” music, and innovations in traditional music.   About the Authors: Linda Sunarti, M.Hum. and Wiwin Triwinarti, M.A. are Lecturers at the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities UI (University of Indonesia), UI Campus Depok, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

Microblogging has taken a quotidian position in the scope of internet usage. This research explores the pragmatic of ughtea, a slang form of ukhti, as a term of address slang and identity in Twitter’s prominent behaviour on virtual sphere: tweeting. Semantically, ukhti refers to “sister” of a possessive pronoun of the first person i.e. the speaker, both in biological and ideological contexts. For the last two years (2018—2019), the usage of the term ukhti has undergone the extension of its meaning through its use among Indonesian Twitter users by changing its form into ughtea as a slang with degenerative meaning, in order to insinuate the exclusivity of the use of the term ukhti among Indonesian conservative Muslims and the misbehavior of ukhti. As a result, the meaning of the term ukhti experiences pejoration. These certain Indonesian Twitter users, according to McCulloch’s classification of Internet People (2019) are classified as Post Internet People. This research problem focuses on the analysis of the speakers, terms, and how both terms used in the context of pejoration. This study aims to analyze both terms in terms of shifting meaning in terms of speakers, speech, and usage by implementing corpus linguistic approach and Martin and White (2005)’s appraisal system. Data sources were obtained from Twitter users' tweets during a certain period (October 2019).

Abstract

This research studies phatic particles translation from Indonesian to Arabic. The discussed translation here includes phatic expression equivalence and translation and form shift. The aim of the study is to analyse the equivalence of phatic expression from Indonesian to Arabic and to look over shift of translation and form so the message from source language is delivered reasonably to target language. The method applied in the study is qualitative descriptive. 105 data were gathered from a webtoon entitled “Flawless” episode 1-10, in Indonesian and Arabic version. To analyse the data, theory of phatic particles in Indonesian from Kridalaksana (1994) is employed. From 105 data, only 24 data were analyzed. The analysis shows that the phatic articles are not completely translated. There are some articles translated accordingly, and some are translated into other forms or absorbed the sound phonetically. There are 7 untranslated particles; 13 translated according their phatic functions; 2 translated into other forms; and 2 absorbed phonetically.

Abstract

This article analyzes message switching, idiomatic expressions, characteristics of idioms, idiomatic forms, and Quranic idioms. The data source of this research is 28 idiomatic expressions in the Quran. The method used is content analysis using a lexical, grammatical, and Arabic stylistic approach. Idiomatic expression is a form of combination of words whose meaning is not the same as the meaning of each word that forms the combination. This article will analyze idiomatic patterns in the Quran whether the Quran tends to use verbal phrase idioms, nominal phrase idioms, prepositional idioms, clause idioms, sentence idioms, and idioms in Arabic translated to non-idioms in Indonesian. Equivalents for idioms in Arabic are sought from among the idioms in Indonesian whereas non-idioms in Arabic are translated as idioms in Indonesian. Quranic idioms mentioned in this article are idioms found in the Quran. In Arabic tasybih baligh (the eloquent analogy) is a very sophisticated language style, there is nothing more sophisticate than tasybih baligh. The conclusion of this article is that the translation or transfer of the meaning of sentences in the source language (SL) into the target language (TL) is much easier than transferring the meaning of surface structures which are sometimes complex, have multiple interpretations, and difficult to understand. Translations of the Quranic verses are more likely to use a faithful translation approach, namely a translation that is faithful to the linguistic form of the source language (SL).

Abstract

The speech act of criticizing is a statement that contains assessment, expression, and emotion towards the behavior and words of the speech partner or the object of criticism. The data corpus studied in this research is the speech act of criticizing in the Arabic series from Saudi Arabia جايبة العيد or Crashing Eid which aired on Netflix in 2023. This descriptive qualitative research data is processed with free listening and note-taking techniques. This study aims to analyze the form of criticizing speech acts in the Hijazi dialect of Arabic contained in the series and classify criticizing speech acts with direct and indirect categories based on Nguyen's theory (2005). The results show that the strategy that is more widely used in the data corpus is direct criticism speech, which acts as an expression of disagreement.
