Abstract

This study examines the effect of an integrated teaching model that combines Flipped Classroom, Authentic Learning, and Ignatian Pedagogy. The study was conducted to observe the learning motivation of Biology Education students in Biosystematics, specifically addressing the topic of “The Role of Biosystematics in Research.” A mixed-methods approach with a Convergent Parallel design was implemented to obtain the quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were collected through a learning motivation questionnaire using a 6-point Likert scale, and the qualitative data were gathered from open-ended questions to support the analysis of the quantitative data. The results show a high average motivation score from 5.37-5.40, with 82.86% to 97.14% of respondents choosing scores 5 and 6 for each item. These findings show that the integrated teaching model encourages engagement through intrinsic reflection and commitment to being morally responsible. Qualitative data reveal that students had been able to experience meaningful learning within real-world contexts, so they felt challenged to be morally responsible. In conclusion, the integrated model supports learning motivation by acting on character development through Ignatian Pedagogy as well as the 4C values (Competence, Conscience, Compassion, and Commitment).

Abstract

Discernment is one of the important points in Ignatian leadership, i.e. leadership that refers to Ignatian spirituality. Higher education leaders are required to exercise discernment in solving problems as part of their responsibilities. This study aims to explore the practice of discretion among Jesuit higher education leaders in Indonesia. The research design was qualitative content analysis. The study involved 46 Jesuit higher education leaders in Indonesia as respondents. Data were collected through an open-ended online questionnaire with questions on issues requiring discretion, reasons/considerations, and skills needed to exercise discernment. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis through three steps, namely coding, determining themes, and determining categories based on similarity of themes. The findings of this study are: (1) reasons/ considerations in discernment include seven categories, namely: practicality, urgency, uncertainty, life values, predicting solutions, external support, and organizational development; (2) things needed in discretion include support, interpersonal skills, self-regulation, soft skills, values, experience, knowledge, and spirituality. The implication of this study for the development of leadership in higher education is the need to strengthen the leader capacity related to the themes in the findings of this study.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the application of dialogic learning as a method for discovering learning materials based on students’ lived experiences. Through dialogue, students are positioned as the subjects of learning, while teachers act as dialogue partners, facilitators, and designers of the learning process. The results of these dialogues are used by teachers to design learning based on the Reflective Pedagogy Paradigm (PPR), with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI). This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with two teachers and seventeen Phase C students at Kanisius Kenalan Elementary School, Borobudur, Magelang as the primary participants. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and photo and video documentation. Data analysis focused on the stages of dialogue, the pedagogical shift by placing students at the center of learning, and the relevance of the resulting learning materials. The results demonstrate that dialogue plays a crucial role in discovering meaningful, contextual, and reflective learning.

Abstract

Members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) are formed with a self-understanding as sinners loved by God. God’s love is the first and foremost impetus for transforming a sinner to repent. This self-image is cultivated through their formative experiences, particularly during the 30-day retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises (SE) of St. Ignatius of Loyola. This article presents the results of a literature-based study of the First Week of the SE. In this section, Ignatius guides retreatants to understand conversion as a dynamic transition from attritio to contritio. The meditative materials provided by Ignatius are intentionally designed to lead retreatants to a deep sense of horror and sorrow for their personal sins, while simultaneously reminding them that they are always loved by God. This approach is rooted in St. Ignatius’ own experience of conversion, especially during his time of ascetic practices in the town of Manresa between 1522 and 1523.

Abstract

This article examines Ignatian Spirituality as a spiritual framework capable of fostering and sustaining unity in family life amid differences in character, cultural background, and life values. Departing from the reality of conflicts commonly encountered in contemporary families, the study argues that spirituality functions not merely as a reinforcement of faith but as a transformative force in relational life. Employing a qualitative approach through a case study method, this research focuses on a Catholic married couple who have lived their marital vocation for more than five decades. The primary data consist of personal reflective documents, which are thematically analyzed in light of the principles of Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises. The findings demonstrate that key practices of Ignatian Spirituality—such as self-denial, discernment of spirits, freedom from disordered attachments, magnanimity, and humility—play a significant role in managing conflict, deepening mutual understanding, and nurturing relational unity within the family. Concrete practices, including reflective prayer, shared spiritual exercises, open communication, and the courage to undergo personal transformation, emerge as effective pathways for relational healing and growth. This article concludes that Ignatian Spirituality is not merely a personal devotional practice but a holistic and effective approach to building sustainable family unity. By orienting family life toward Christ as its ultimate end, Ignatian Spirituality offers a concrete spiritual resource for families to grow in love, interior freedom, and faithful commitment.

Abstract

The First Spiritual Exercises is an adaptation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignasius Loyola, designed to make them more accessible to a wider audience. In Indonesia, The First Spiritual Exercises have been introduced as Latihan Rohani Pemula (LRP) and are conducted through online accompaniment, enabling participation from people of diverse backgrounds, including Muslims. This study aims to explore the experiences of Muslim participants in LRP and its impact on their spiritual life and inner well-being. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, this research examines the experiences of three Muslim participants who took part in LRP: two active (registered) participants and one passive (unregistered) participant. Data were collected through telephone interviews, written reflections, and triangulation with facilitators and significant others (family members or companions). Descriptive analysis was conducted through processes of data organization, coding, and reduction into key themes. The findings show that despite differences between active and passive participants, both experienced meaningful benefits, including growth in prayer, experiences of God’s love, reconciliation with themselves and others, and more realistic changes in attitudes and behavior. This study affirms that LRP can contribute to the development of interfaith spirituality, support mental well-being, and open spaces for practical dialogue between Islam and Christianity.

Abstract

The Spiritual Exercises (SpEx), written by Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), offer significant perspectives on religious education theory and practice. This research addresses how such a spirituality can be practiced as interreligious education without overlooking its confessional nature. Employing library research, it offers a content analysis of SpEx through the framework of communicative theology developed by Matthias Scharer and Bernd Jochen Hilberath, which facilitates interreligious education by presupposing fundamental panentheistic ideas, employing synchronic and diachronic approaches through its three-level theology and four-factor religious identity, and incorporating nonverbal communication actions. SpEx fulfils these religious principles by embracing the conviction that God is to be discovered in all things, employing a cura personalis approach, and engaging in personal prayer. SpEx can serve as a model for interreligious education by drawing on the Ignatian educational framework, which includes the phases of context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation. This paradigm can be incorporated into a fractal model illustrating the dynamics of religious identity, constructed from four factors (I, We, It, and Globe) that manifest at the levels of concrete experience, experiential reflection, and scientific reflection, transcending the collective memory of a specific religious tradition.
