Abstract

Ignatian leadership training programs at Kolese Kanisius Jakarta need to be evaluated periodically. The goal of this study is to examine how the Ignatian transformation designated as the goal of the leadership training programs is experienced by the students involved. This study also aims to clarify the characteristics of an Ignatian transformation and its prerequisites. The methods used in this research were a literature study mainly on Jesuit education and in-depth interviews with 9 former members of the Canisius College students council. All respondents were determined according to the purposive sampling principle while the data analysis was done using Miles and Huberman’s method. Ignatian transformation in this study is discussed in the sense of the formation of “men and women for and with others” and “human excellence,” which together form two complementary aspects of a single transformative process. This transformation takes place in Canisians who have completed their Ignatian leadership training at Kolese Kanisius. The transformative effect manifests in four areas of human excellence, namely the 4Cs (competence, conscience, commitment, compassion), aimed at service to others. Canisians display the qualities of Ignatian leaders who can reflect on themselves and direct their actions towards addressing the needs of the world. The self-transformation experienced by the Canisians results from leadership training aligned with the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP). Additional factors to this transformation include: a school environment that encourages ongoing formation, a shared Ignatian language within the school community, peer accompaniment throughout the formation process, and role models from the former Presidium.

Abstract

This paper explores the multifaceted relationship between Yayasan (Pendidikan) Kanisius (YK) and the Archdiocese of Semarang (KAS), highlighting operational and relational challenges within a Catholic educational framework. The method used in this research was a literature study combined with empirical experience and interviews. Based on the author’s experience with YK Cabang Surakarta, the study outlines the foundational mission of YK to provide Catholic education, facing financial instability, declining enrollment, and limited support from KAS. The strained partnership was analyzed through Javanese social philosophy and Michel Foucault’s power dynamics, noting that hierarchical structures and inconsistent communication from KAS hinder YK's effectiveness. The author advocates for synodality through strengthened dialogue and mutual understanding, informed by Ignatian spirituality and Avery Dulles' model of the "servant Church." This approach calls for creative fidelity, where YK and KAS collaborate in decision-making to better address educational and social challenges. The study references theological insights from Evangelii Gaudium and Fratelli Tutti, urging KAS to actively support YK’s mission, especially to serve marginalized communities. In conclusion, the paper emphasizes a "servant church" model to transform the KAS-YK relationship into a partnership that honors both educational and ecclesial commitments. Improved communication and resource-sharing are essential for a sustainable impact, fostering a mission-centered community that aligns with the Church’s social teaching and the needs of Indonesia’s diverse society.

Abstract

Christians are pilgrims on this earth journeying towards the fulfilment of time. At the same time, they are also journeying along so many different axes of this world. Harmonizing the two journeys presents the Christians with a never-ending task of spiritually revitalizing themselves. The excess of progressing through secular journey as Christians brings a lot of toils to the center of their spirituality, the heart. Pope Francis's recent encyclic, Dilexit Nos, provides us with insights into the spiritual capacity of the heart. Especially, his treatment of St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises on the human heart may provide us with inspiration on the heart as the source of spiritual energy for journeying on the pilgrimage in this world. Applying different literatures of theology of spirituality to read the Encyclic, this paper will elaborate the role of the Exercises in nurturing our heart as the locus of spiritual pilgrimage. In combination with Pope Francis’ bull for the Jubilee of 2025, Spes Non Confundit, we can conclude that the sign of heart ready for a spiritual pilgrimage lies in its ability to grow eschatological hope. The spiritual pilgrimage of Christians needs to be based on the capacity of the heart to hope in the process towards the fulfillment of God’s Kingdom.

Abstract

Ignatian spirituality places particular emphasis on the meaning of suffering as a means of drawing closer to Christ. In the teachings of Ignatius Loyola, suffering is not seen as an end in itself, but as a path to respond to Christ’s call with fidelity. Through meditations such as The Call of the King and The Meditation on Two Standards, retreat participants are invited to understand suffering as an integral part of a life centered on God, where suffering becomes a way to experience a deeper connection with the Christ who suffered. In this context, suffering is not sought for its own sake, but as an expression of detachment and willingness to follow God’s will in all circumstances. By accepting suffering, one experiences the liberating love of God, leading to inner transformation and a deeper understanding of faith. Ignatian spirituality thus places suffering as an essential part of the spiritual journey, guiding the individual to a more meaningful life in unity with Christ.

Abstract

Drawing class as an extracurricular may seem simple. Drawing class may be considered a hobby that does not have a significant impact on learning. However, if drawing class is implemented dialogically using the Curriculum based on Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm, the results will be very creative and contextual. The dialogue process was implemented using 3 types of dialogue, i.e. daily dialogue, epistemological dialogue, and ontological dialogue. This article was the author's reflection on the drawing lesson process facilitated by the author and the results of the lesson. It showed how dialogical drawing lessons can achieve the basic things needed in learning, namely creativity and contextualization. The main source of reflection was the author's experience in holding drawing lessons and the book Kanisius Muntilan Middle School, Bethlehem van Java (2024), which contains drawings and writings from 4 students from Kanisius Muntilan Middle School. The reflection was carried out based on the Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm Based Curriculum framework published by the Indonesian Jesuit School Association.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) in Analytic Geometry instruction and assesses student outcomes following its application. Given the importance of holistic education in mathematics instruction, this study explores how IPP can enhance both cognitive and affective student development. A qualitative approach was employed, with the data collected through evaluation sheets measuring competence, compassion, conscience, and commitment among 14 undergraduate students at Universitas Sanata Dharma. The IPP was implemented through its five stages: context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation. The findings suggest that IPP fosters deeper conceptual engagement, ethical development, and teamwork through attitudes that promote holistic learning. However, challenges were encountered in assessing the depth of student reflections, particularly in evaluating students’ ability to critically analyze their learning experiences and in measuring the consistency of individual commitment within group activities. This study contributes to educational research and practice by providing a comprehensive overview of the application of IPP in Analytic Geometry learning and demonstrating its potential to foster meaningful, holistic education while identifying areas for improvement in assessment practices.

Abstract

This article examines how Henri Nouwen’s theology of vulnerability, grounded in his personal struggles and pastoral experiences, reinterprets Christ’s kenosis (self-emptying) as a transformative spiritual practice. The study aims to analyze the resonance between Nouwen’s spiritual journey and the principles of Ignatian spirituality, particularly the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. Employing a qualitative literature research method, the article draws on Nouwen’s autobiographical writings and key Ignatian texts, using comparative and hermeneutic analysis to highlight both similarities and distinctions. The results show that while Nouwen was not directly shaped by Ignatian spirituality, his approach to discernment, daily reflection, and accompaniment in weakness naturally aligns with Ignatian themes. The article concludes that embracing vulnerability as kenosis not only deepens personal spiritual growth but also offers a resilient model for pastoral ministry in contemporary contexts. This synthesis deepens our understanding of Christian formation, highlighting that human fragility can be a sacred space for encountering God and fostering authentic community.

Abstract

Context is the beginning of the learning process based on the Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm (IPP) which must be built before starting learning. Context needs to be built through a dialogue process. The problem is that the dialogue process does not appear in the IPP book published by the Association of Indonesian Jesuit Schools (ASJI), meaning that dialogue is not applied in the learning process. Without dialogue, the learning process will not touch on real problems in the school environment. This paper uses a literature study method that analyzes the book published by ASJI to place the dialogue process in building context. The dialogue process plays a role in building a context that is the basis for making learning materials so that the learning process can change the old context into a new context that is more humane in accordance with the objectives of IPP-based learning. This study uses the content analysis method of 3 series of Jesuit School books, namely: Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm Curriculum, Education Quality Standards, and Teacher Professionalism Development Design, which are summarized by the Indonesian Jesuit School Association (ASJI).

Abstract

In education, especially secondary education, attention to the formation of students' personalities as whole human beings is crucial. Cura personalis, a distinctive principle in Ignatian education, provides a pedagogical approach that emphasizes personal and reflective accompaniment throughout the process of student growth and transformation. This study is a Systematic Literature Review of 13 selected scientific articles from Google Scholar during the period 2015–2025, using the PRISMA framework and Boolean techniques. The results of the study indicate that cura personalis plays a significant role in transformative education, encompassing spiritual, pedagogical, and social dimensions. In addition to being a relational approach, cura personalis has been proven to be operationalized in online learning, mentoring, discernment, and value-based leadership. This study also highlights the gap in empirical measurement and its application outside Jesuit institutions. This study aims to affirm the relevance and urgency of developing cura personalis as a path of education that liberates and humanizes students. This study also aims to provide a conceptual foundation for its broader application in the context of secondary education.

Abstract

This study aims to implement the Reflective Pedagogy Paradigm (PPR) in mathematics learning, specifically on rational number material in class VII of SMP Advent Bandar Lampung. PPR emphasizes holistic learning through five main stages: context, experience, reflection, action, and evaluation, with the aim of forming competent, conscientious, compassionate, and committed students. This study is a qualitative study. Research data were collected through observation, student reflection, and work results in the Student Worksheet (LKPD). The results of the study indicate that the application of PPR through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can improve understanding of mathematical concepts, critical thinking skills, collaboration between students, and attitudes of responsibility and discipline. Meanwhile, the student's reflection reflects active involvement in the contextual and meaningful learning process. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of PPR contributes to improving learning outcomes.
