Abstract

Abstract

It has been contextual nowadays to observe the traditional feng-shui theory currently  becoming popular topic of discussion. The discussion covers the stake holders in building industry, developers, home owners, professionals, and among the academics of architecture education in the universities. What is the essence of the feng-shui concept? This paper approaches this topic from the different aspects of culture, socio-history, anthropology, ethnography, semiotics, and hermeneutic. It analyses in brief about its history, the major premises in feng-shui, any changes through the Chinese cultural history timeline,  the application tools to transfer the concept into real construction, the persistence of feng-shui in modern life, and the discussions within current contextual situation.

Abstract

This articlewas written in 1987 and was not published to date. It deals withKelsen's concept of justice that is based on his theory of pure law. Kelsen's work was written in the speculative tradition of the European Staatsrecht, which does not necessarily resemble constitutional law in the English analytical tradition. The positive law that governs the daily life should be the result of legal studies that in turn has to be liberated from political interests. For that sake man has to revert to the Grundnorm, by means of continuous application of teleology (which is commensurate with the term "hermeneutics" in modern philosophy). Kelsen was concerned about the trend of formalism as a short cut in the pursuit of justice, which could fire back on the coherence of the social process.

Abstract

Reading Schleiermacher’s Speeches might give rise to different experience of religion. It appears that the more important issue today is not the identity (being), but the communality and sociality, for communality is a ‘space’ where one’s being is able to move in its ‘becoming’. The importance of experience is now considered much more than before. In this article the emphasis on one’s experience and its connectedness with that of others is refreshed and further elaborated. Schleiermacher’s ideas question the traditional patterns of (Christian) communities, which to some extent have implanted uniformity, dogmatism and oppressions, as being responsible for the emergence of indifferentism today. Community, as Schleiermacher has pleaded in the Speeches, must be fluid and broadly inclusive. The immediate self-consciousness is depicted in the moment of ‘listening’—the world might have been blinded by appearances and made deaf by the voices, but there remains the process of listening. Maybe a time for a ‘listening’ religion? A ‘listening’ religious community? Keywords :*religion *fragmentation *virtuality *indifferentism *power*rational Christianity *institutional representation *fascination*'true' religion *appearances to experiences *intuition *feeling*continuous reciprocity *fluid and inclusive community

Abstract

Pope Francis’s statement “I am the Vatican II” sounds a manifesto. To which direction is the wind blowing the Church’s ark, we might have already guessed. The existing dichotomy between the liberal and the conservative as well as the tension between the primacies of the pastoral and the dogmatic will yet be conflicting and colliding with each other. After 50 years, the 2nd Vatican Council and the ongoing future discussions about the basic pastoral directions within the Catholicism are to this day white-hot. The Pope could be anyone. But theologians, for these are who make the lineamenta of a new document, will continue to colour the trend of the Church in giving responses to the signs of the time. The future of Catholicism will not be viewed as limited as the lens of the Vatican II. The future humanism will challenge the Church with wider and more complex considerations rather than dwelling on the problems of dialogue with other religions apologetically or racketing with traditionalism, liberalism, and sekularism. There are pressing matters such as ecology, global warming, terrorism, and the sprawling gap between the poor and the rich. Macro-ethics has become more imperative than micro-ethics. The Catholic Church is called out to create “a better world for all” – the Kingdom of God that is inclusive and at a stroke pluralistic.

Abstract

The value of every social ideal, including democracy, is always determined by two criteria, coherence and applicability. The power of democracy to fulfill these criteria  depends on its ability to solve two kinds of social problems, the normative and the factual problems. Scepticism toward democracy usually concerns its ability to handle the latter, in which there is an old Platonian challenge that it must deal with. Democracy would be able to answer the challenge satisfactorily as long as we recognize the distinction between procedural and substantive rationality.

Abstract

“God makes each thing beautiful in its time.” This quote has somewhat found its common usage in social media. People have some habit of quoting this expression whenever they encounter difficulties so as to comfort themselves. Through these words, a person might hope earnestly that “God will help me or provide me with the ‘beautiful’ time someday.” But the question that immediately follows is “When?” What if the burden stays and life remains unchanged? Not many of the fans of these wise words know that the saying originates from the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:11), which in itself is a form of ancient Hebrew literature. In the complete verse of the Book, the clause “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time is followed by another clause, “also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.” The later part of the verse (3:11b) is often ignored. However, by accepting the words that “God hath set the world in their heart”, one realises that he or she cannot fathom God’s mind, but might make peace and accept that divine question. Hence, one might realise that both good times and the not-so-good times could be but “beautiful times” for oneself.
