Abstract

The lack of priests in some dioceses in Indonesia has become a constant problem due to the dearth of candidates for the clergy. This situation  cannot be overcome if the diocesan Bishop of the mentioned dioceses would con-tinue to entrust parochial ministries only to the ordained  ministers. A question then could be raised: Can parochial ministry be entrusted to a lay person? This is a fundamental question because this is not just a case of maximizing the participation of the laity in handling parochial ministries, but also a question about the legality of allowing the laity to handle parochial ministry. Canon 517 § 2 provides the possibi-lity of entrusting the pastoral care of a parish to a person other than priest. For the purpose of this study, I focuse on the person of lay cate-chists due to their specific preparation for such important service. By virtue of law and given by the parti-cular condition of some dioceses in Indonesia as well as their personal capability, some of lay cathecists should be appointed as parochial administrators by the diocesan Bishop given the needs of the people and the place.

Abstract

Intercultural encounter  is something inevitable and crucial today. Its significance for religions depends on how religions conceive of intercultural translatability  and the meaning of ‘the other’. Concerning the former, there are three possibilities : different cultures can be seen as radically untranslatable, mutually translatable in terms of universal economic medium, or  mutually translatable in terms of  universal doctrinal message. Each brings its own consequences.  Concerning the latter, the other may be viewed  as the outer-other or the inner-other of which both require some kind of self-relativization on the part of religion. If  Christianity is consistent with its ‘logic of love’, it would be governed by heteronomous reason in which the self lives from out of itself , whereas its dwelling place is not the privileged centre.

Abstract

Most of the content of the Scriptures are conveyed in narratives telling God’s acts of salvation. The communication of the narratives in a vigorous way can give weight to faith confession, liturgy, and catchesis. Christian faith proclamation is basically a series of narratives telling the story of life, death, and resurrection of Christ as has been told by the Scriptures and retold in narratives. A ‘narrative analysis’ is a method that has its advantages on the ‘narrative world’ with all the images and imagination. By entering the narrative world constructed by the authors of the Scriptures, the reader participates in the ‘world of images’ presenting the meanings contained in it and that brings a useful faculty for the contextual praxis of proclamation. This model of communication places the author and the reader in the same ‘narrative world’ though with different experiences. A narrative analysis is not so much a ‘door’ opening to the past behind the narratives as a ‘mirror’ projecting particular images, i.e. the narrative world, so as to provide an ability to the reader to absorb the meanings conveyed in the narratives and to experience their saving power.

Abstract

The message about Jesus the Christ is always contextual in nature. The message serves as the answer to particular quest, including the quest for basic orientation of life. It should be noted, however, that contextualization is also fragmentation which presupposes certain kind of functionalism.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Axel Honneth gives a new direction for Critical Theory from Frankfrut School. He points out that the theoretical foundation of intersubjective relationship is not merely based on the dimensions of human communication as indicated by Habermas, but also on the recognition dimension. He proposes a shift of normative paradigm from the presuppositions of communicative action to the presuppositions of human identity development. This article summarises some of the main ideas of the critical theory of Honneth. It will describe the theoretical direction taken by Honneth that distinguishes it from Habermas, who later helped to find the problem arresting people into various forms of injustice, a pathology that occurs on the level of rationality, which will be described in the second part of this article. The third part will describe Honneth’s thought about recognition as a moral grammar, followed by a review of the three areas of recognition as a practical basis of critical theory. Some conclusions will be drawn concerning the importance of the small dimensions of recognition in contemporary society.

Abstract

Living under Economic Colonization: A Philosophical Remark on Arendt’s Human Condition Ujan, Andre Ata

Abstract

The culture of economic colonization is at the background and yet at the center of Arendt’s Human Condition. This colonizing culture is perfectly actualized through work and labor under a rhythmic coordination of a pater familias. It is more than ever enslaving and alienating, since it excludes possibilities for self-emancipation and provides no room for individuality. Work and labor therefore stand on the opposite side to the political. The culture they offer is in nature contradictory to the one promoted by the political. Hence the political is believed to be the remedy of economic and political problems. It in essence promotes action, i.e., the culture necessary for human self-emancipation. Arendt’s position on the idea of the political, however, must not be taken for granted. Arendt’s insistence on direct participation in political life has reminded us that citizens must be able to take care of their own desires and interests. It would be naïve to uncritically entrust one’s destiny, life, and future to the political authority or to the state.
