Abstract

Education has been developed in the western part as well as in the eastern part of the world, although each might have brought forth quite different methods and values. Education also has evolved in Indonesia since long before the contemporary systems. Sewaka Darma, an ancient Sundanese text, contains a particular model of education by way of teaching the wisdom of life. This text inspires further discussion on how education has been understood long time ago in its particular Sundanese context. Sewaka Darma is a kind of textbook for teaching that contains discourses between a teacher and his or her student. The teacher presents the teachings in a form of kawih (advice). By implementing a narrative model, the teacher conveys philosophy of life, the way of perfection, and moksha. The core of these teachings could be summarized: (a) that life is about suffering, being mortal, and a temporary condition, and (b) that life moves towards the perfection in moksha. On the level of practical everydayness, in order to gain perfection human strives to be a knowing and integral person. Sewaka Darma shows particular educational elements, that is, (a) virtue teachings for the sake of finding the basis of life through a spiritual outlook and (b) virtue advices that insinuate a learning methodology: on the wholeness and integrity of the self, on the character education by way of nyantrik (to be a follower in order to learn) method, on teachers as the role-model, and on the educational community.

Abstract

A critical outlook on democracy in general and Pancasila Democracy in particular is a necessary reflection through the course of times. This paper examines Pancasila democracy in descriptive ways as well as prescriptive way. These approaches are an attempt to explore Pancasila democracy as an open ideology in its essence. In Indonesia’s history, Pancasila democracy was once used as a tool to legitimize power. However, discourses on the subject matter in its nature must be done in the diversity of rational arguments and cannot depend on the interpretations of the ruler alone. When democracy is isolated from rational discourses, it can get caught up in various problems such as “money politics” and “identity politics” which eventually destroy democracy itself. This article portrays the dynamics of democracy in Indonesia, both in its formal settings and as a building that allows humanity reach its dignity. Pancasila Democracy can be a space for a change towards Indonesia that is more animating to the spirit of divinity, humanity, and nationalism and towards a society with solid physical and spiritual well-being.

Abstract

Keindahan hidup, sebuah keindahan sebagaimana adanya, sebagaimana dirasakan, sebagaimana diucapkan.

Abstract

This study attempts to come up with a contextual theological understanding of the biblical concepts of the Kingdom of God in the light of the armed conflict in Mindanao. It seeks to understand the roots and causes of conflict in Mindanao (hermeneutical situation), into which the meaning of the biblical message of a peaceable kingdom is interpreted and understood in a meaningful manner. Taking into account the current socio-political, economic and cultural realities that contribute to the on-going armed conflict in Mindanao, this study raises the issue of how the kingdom of God which embodies God’s love, peace, liberation and justice should be understood and concretized in a way that it could inform and influence the different religious groups and organizations involved in the Mindanao peace process. This attempt for contextualization is based on the principle that theological formulation in the context of conflict in Mindanao, can only be meaningful and intelligible if it reflects critically on the lived-experiences that is shared by different Muslim and Christian communities in Mindanao, especially the poor and marginalized masses in their search for well-being and self-determination.

Abstract

The main tasks of the university are implementing learning, research, and community service. In a multicultural and multireligious Asia, the actualization of these tasks requires a dialogue with cultures, religions, and the poor. Today, the university must consider radical movements and fundamentalism that threaten harmony in the society. This paper is focused on opportunities that can be explored to realise the task of the Catholic universities in Yogyakarta in developing dialogue and harmony in Yogyakarta. This task might need a new and effective model of dialogue for a better living together in harmony. By applying a method of documental study and interviews, this study is focused on the exploration of challenges encountered by the Catholic universities in Yogyakarta in developing a community transformative dialogue. There are three main points. First, a description of the meaning of the community transformative dialogue. Second, an exploration of cultural potentials in Yogyakarta for developing community transformative dialogue. Third, a proposal for developing community transformative dialogue. These are three important results of this study. This transformative dialogue is a contextual and cultural dialogue that could be effective and appropriate for the multicultural and multireligious societies. In Yogyakarta, unity and harmony (keselarasan) are the core of the community that is necessary for the development of dialogue towards the well-being of the society. Catholic universities should encourage student activities in the campus and in the society as a praxis of continuous dialogue for a harmonious living together.

Abstract

The scriptures of all the world religions are written with hidden meanings; this is to ensure that only the initiated, the adept and the ardent seeker of knowledge can understand the deeper meanings of the text and this is done through the utilization of proverbs, metaphors, anecdotes and parables, which the literature of Judeo-Christian theology refers to a “dark sayings.” This paper subjects the God-human covenant, which is metaphorically captured in Psalm 23, to critical analysis within the context of the essence of the relationship between God and human and how that covenants human attitudinally and behaviorally in his or her  interpersonal relationship in the human community including his sensitivity to the earth environment and other non-human occupants of the earth. The paper argues that it is this attitudinal and behavioral disposition of the individual to his relationship with his fellow human beings, his lower neighbors in the animal kingdom and the earth environment that determines the degree to which he lives in harmony with the Creator and, consequently, his transcendence and, therefore, ascent on the eternal journey towards oneness with God, the Good Shepherd. This, the paper emphasizes, has nothing whatsoever to do with the color, creed, station or location of the individual; it is purely a one-on-one relationship between God and every human being in creation.

Abstract

Abstract

In the information-saturated culture today identity of the self is getting blurred and pulverized. The situation is disorienting and calling into question the concept of ‘identity’, ‘selfhood’, ‘subject’ or ‘authenticity’. Despite various kinds of method of ‘self-mastery’, the self remains elusive, even more than ever before. This article discusses the problem of ‘self’, not in terms of its ‘essence’, but rather in terms of what s/he does in the practice of the self. Identity is something constructed by the act of searching for meaning. Through ‘moral imagination’, the search for meaning becomes moral responses toward events of humanity. Self is the subject of history that actualizes him/herself through the history of humanity.
