Abstract

Penghargaan atas kebebasan berbicara haruslah memungkinkan individu melawan arus umum.

Abstract

Romantic heritage, as a philosophical current, is still central to our recent culture. The ecological issues and pluralism not only exist in the realm crucial problem of the weakness in political commitment, but first of all it is that of ethics and moral. Thus, it is the problem of inner voice, personal and spiritual. Romanticism disagree with rationalism and materialism  epistemology, subsequently, they look for 'philosophy of nature' as a source and their basic worldview. Prophetically speaking, the primacy of intuition, imagination, feeling and passion, as an aesthetics terminology, are the words which they strived to answer the problem. The wisdom of nature have teach our human beings. Back to 'noble savage' is an imperative action, because history has teach us.

Abstract

Death is a boundary situation that all human beings face at the end of their life. Even when Church’s teaching on afterlife has been widely accepted by the faithful, most Christians still find it hard to accept death as part of their life. Some of the faithful tend to avoid or to question the situation and the people accompanying them because of their unreadiness in facing death. Christians are invited to accept and to recognise death as an inevitable fact, but also as a reality that brings hope for resurrection and everlasting life. This article attempts to explore some biblical, philosophical, and theological perspectives that can underline interrelatedness among death, resurrection, and the everlasting life. Christian reflections of death can be illuminating when seen as perfection and fulfilment of humanity, as a transformation process of human’s life, and as the faithful’s journey towards God the Father.

Abstract

This paper analyses the changes in production’s pattens, distributions and consumptions of Indonesian contemporary art by way of comparing the regional and international art exhibitions participated by Indonesia during the last two decades (1990-2010). There were two dominant and different patterns in each decade. The development during the 90s showed the dominance of the state's role, notably Japan and Australia, through large-scale exhibitions with the support of government funding and infrastructure. However, Indonesian contemporary art later became more prominent among the non-government initiatives, especially through the market activities at the auction houses and art fair in Asia. By referring to cultural theories and globalisation process, this paper wants to show how the development of Indonesian contemporary art might have been related to the changes in the constellation of geo-political and geo-economic developments in Asia Pacific which lead to the triumph of neoliberalism. The growing popularity of international art fair involving commodities and capital in large quantities can be seen as an evidence of how the fine arts are increasingly following the pattern of trade and free markets. As an institution that previously was doing the 'validation' of art, public museum now 'competes' with the free market fundamentalism loaded with some elite’s interests. Keywords:*globalisation, *Indonesian contemporary art, *postmodernism, *geopolitics, *geo-economics, *artmarket, *neoliberalism, *regionalism, *art fair, *sociopolitical art

Abstract

John Dewey never publishes a special work on theory of democracy. Nevertheless, his concern with democracy is undoubted. What is his main thought of democracy? This article is a textual analysis of the idea of democracy spread on his various works. As an experimentalist, his thought on democracy is to respond social problems. He views that two fundamental problems of democracy in his era are a tendency of reducing the meaning of democracy and social movements using violence in the name of political democracy. Dewey does not only look for the solution of the problems of democracy, but also put democracy in living process. The idea of liberty, equality and fraternity, as the democratic trinity, is ethical ideal of humanity. As an ethical idea, it should inspire each person in developing society for a better life. For this reason, he underlines the important of actualizing democracy through education.

Abstract

After comparatively analizing Rerum Novarum and Octogesima Adveniens, this paper examines how the historical context of the documents has influenced the Catholic Church's stance on the role of women in public life. Leo XIII, in his encyclical Rerum Novarum, despite his denouncement of inhuman situations of the working class under capitalistic system, gave little attention to the unjust and inhuman situations endured by women. He still held the view that women are primarily destined to do domestic works and not to involve themselves in public areas. Paul VI in his Octogesima Adveniens gave better role to women in society. He promoted the principle of equal opportunities among men and women in social, economic, politic and cultural activities. The research shows that the sensibility of the Catholic Church  towards the real problems of injustice does grow along with the sign of the Times and with the changes of contexts.

Abstract

It has been said that the advance of human reflectivity is a menace to orthodoxy. Some brilliant philosophical ideas have been accused of threatening the teachings of religious institutions. That might be the reason why some thinkers were condemned or even punished by religious institutions. In truth, however, human reflectivity is not always a threat. It, instead, can be a torchlight: it can help reformulate traditional teaching afresh and anew. And this can apply to the thoughts  of Martin Heidegger. His investigation of the meaning of Being can be deployed to help shed new light to the way Christians understand the revelation. Understanding truth as aletheia, that is, Being that is revealing itself continuously, paves the path to understand God who is unceasingly revealing Godself. Revelation takes place at an ontological level. Revelation is something that besieges human inevitably. Human should not simply linger within the humdrum banalities of daily business, but instead, should be courageous to penetrate into their authenticity to hear the real whispers of God. KeyWords:*Watchman State, *das Geviert, *otentisitas, *aletheia, *wahyu, *bahasa, *Sang Ada, *degodization, *Eigentlichkeit, *Interrelatedness, *'YangLain’

Abstract

The old polarity between hyper-liberalism and hypercollectivism is in fact still very much alive until now. This article seeks to do justice to both poles by utilizing Hegel's “Philosophy of Mind”. The concept of 'worldconsciousness' is elaborated as Absolute Reason in which individual and society are united without losing themselves, without letting one be swallowed by the other. The ethical life developed by Hegel is a process in which individual comes to find her/himself through the dialectic between subjective and objective good. Society is viewed as an organism by which individual finds her/his dignityas a person.

Abstract

The paper studies the essence and doctrinaire interpretation of ‘transcendence’ from the religious perspective covering the creeds of Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Baha’i. The paper also reviews the philosophical roots of ‘transcendence’ discussing its original definition, the medieval usage, colloquial usage, transcendent theosophy and the Kantian and modern philosophy of transcendence within which the views of Socrates, Plato, David Hume, Mulla Sadra, Jean-Paul Sartre and Stephen Palmquist, were brought to bear on the discourse. Essentially, the paper contends that there is an eternal scuffle that is taking place between higher and lower forces and the main arena of this struggle is in the human mind as encased in the human body. The paper furthers that in every individual, there is the tri-unity of the senses, the soul and the spirit. The senses are as imbedded in the human body with the sense of touch, taste, sight, sound and smell; the soul is the essence of man’s existence here on earth while the spirit is a spark of God in human. In its journey on earth, the soul continually utilizes the mind in choosing between the essence of the soft whispers of the spirit and the compelling demands of the senses. The soul is, therefore, constantly caught between these two forces; and this is what is dubbed the Battle of Evermore. The author holds that this second-by-second non-violent eternal conflict takes place in all human beings irrespective of color or creed and station or location on earth. Ascendancy in the single super consciousness of the ethereal is a direct product of the cumulative of the degree to which the soul defeats the compulsions of the senses. That, the paper concludes, is the essence of transcendence. Key Words:*Transcendence, *Human mind, *Senses, *Soul, *Spirit, *Philosophical perspective, *Religious perspective, *Transcendent theosophy, *The end of transcendence, *Personal enterprise, *Universal phenomenon.
