Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of group dynamics to students to improve their interpersonal communication skill in doing classroom discussions in English lesson. Using proportional random sampling technique, researchers selected 35 of the 2nd grade students of Odessa Secondary School No. 121. The type of this quantitative research is a pre-experimental research with pre-test post-test one group design model. The experiment was carried out in one group without a comparison group. Based on the research findings and discussion, the application of group dynamics to students was known to be effective in improving their interpersonal communication skill in conducting classroom discussions, especially in English lesson. With the implementation of group dynamics, all students confidently expressed their opinions in class discussions. The application of group dynamics also allowed students to appreciate the opinions expressed by others, and ultimately trained the students’ ability to find problem-solving solutions.

Abstract

The primary objectivity of this current small-scale qualitative study was to profoundly investigate Indonesian EFL teachers’ foreign language teaching anxiety in teaching practicum activities. To reach this pre-determined research aim, 5 open-ended written narrative inquiry questions were administered to 2 English Education Master Students, batch 2020 of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. The research procedure employed in this present qualitative study was asking an agreement from the research participants, sending the online narrative inquiry questions, and subdividing the frequently-appeared research findings into specific themes. Drawing on the obtained research results, it was revealed that foreign language teaching anxiety experienced by pre-service Indonesian EFL teachers could potentially be alleviated in the support of suitable teaching practicum programs as well as ingenious self-management strategies. As a final note, supportive teaching practicum mentors’ supports, critical identification of foreign language teaching anxiety factors, appropriate teaching training, and education faculty programs are indispensably needed to progressively supersede excessive foreign language teaching anxiety with high-quality teaching performances.

Abstract

Throughout the 17th to 18th centuries, slavery was practiced throughout the European colonies of America. Until the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865, slavery in the United States was legal. Under the law, enslaved people are treated as property and can be bought, sold, or given away. Slavery lasted in about half of the states of the United States until 1865. Our aim with this paper was to review a little about slavery that took place in the United States and freed slaves with the passage of the Amendments to the United States Constitution which was delivered at Martin Luther King’s speech. The researcher analyzed using qualitative descriptive approach. The researcher found that there are macro functions in the speech delivered by King on August 28, 1963. We discussed there are seven elements of communication of language, namely the addressed, the addressee, the channel, the message form, the topic, the code, and the settings. In conclusion is the addresser is Martin Luther King, the addressee is 250.000 people, the channel is RARE FACTS, the message form is “I Have a Dream” was born from the unrest of Martin Luther King, a black man who was familiar with racial discrimination since childhood. As a fighter for equality, he is no stranger to challenges from white citizens or the government. But his speech that afternoon, managed to make about 250,000 people who gathered at the Lincoln Memorial amazed and burned with enthusiasm. In the speech, Luther King touched on issues of unemployment, racial, social justice, civil rights, gender equality between whites and blacks, and hopes for the repeal of laws and policies that support segregation based on race. The whole world then remembered the “I Have a Dream” speech as Martin Luther King's personal vision that had a huge impact on many people, the topic is I Have a Dream, the code is American English and the setting is on August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC. Solemn and calm.

Abstract

Tokopedia introduced a boy group from South Korea named BTS as Brand Ambassador (BA). Through advertising, Tokopedia tries to attract people's attention, especially K-pop fans. This research was made to analyze the elements of communication of language, the elements of the macro functions, what maxims are obeyed, and what maxims are flouted in the Tokopedia x BTS video advertisement. This research uses the discourse analysis method. Discourse analysis is a qualitative method that concentrates more on the meaning of the data than on the generalization of the data. The results of this research are that the seven elements of communication of language are present in both Tokopedia x BTS advertising videos, while the elements of the macro functions are only fulfilled by the second video ad and the first ad video only obeys three maxims, while the second ad video has obeyed all maxims.

Abstract

Advertising in online shopping serves as a means to promote or advertise an item or service in the hope of obtaining maximum income of the advertised product. Usually an advertisement uses languages ​​that are very short, concise, clear and interesting to influence the public and the general public. This study aims to identify the form of place deixis found in online shopping advertisements. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study are in the form of clauses, sentences, and discourses containing place deixis in online shopping advertisements. The data collection techniques used in the research are listen and note technique. Meanwhile, data analysis includes (1) classifying advertising data online shopping; (2) classifying the place deixis form data; and (3) set aside data that similar but not the same based on the form of clauses, sentences, and discourses. The results of this study shows that the form of place deixis in online shopping advertisements with data of 5 data in the form of clauses, sentences, and discourses.

Abstract

Advertising is a form of displaying messages by non-personal communicators through the media to audiences in exchange for consideration. In other words, advertising is a form of impersonal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods, or services advertised by a particular sponsor and for which consideration must be paid. Some interpret from a purely communication, advertising and marketing point of view, others from a psychological point of view. The communication perspective tends to emphasize the process of delivering messages from the communicator to the audience. From an advertising perspective, the emphasis tends to be on aspects of delivering creative and persuasive messages delivered through special media. The marketing perspective emphasizes the importance of advertising as a marketing tool, namely selling products. Speech act events are usually useful for confirming certain information. Speech act events are characterized by the presence of speakers and speech partners. The problems studied in this analysis are speech acts, idioms, utterances, and phrases contained in television advertisements for an instant noodle products. This research is important because in production, promotion is one of the important aspects to boost product sales. A qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach was used to conduct this research. The data for this study were generated and analyzed using the instant noodle advertising language. Data collection techniques used are observation and note-taking techniques. Data is obtained by viewing and monitoring it. The instant noodle advertisements and recording data from selected advertisements for study. The results of this study indicate that there are verbal speech acts, nonverbal speech acts, and verbal speech acts.

Abstract

The problems of this study are how the perlocutionary speech act of electric car is advertised and how to deliver the car advertisements. Thus this research will further improve students’ language skills. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach for the Indonesian version of the electric car promotional video by Prestige Motorcars Indonesia. Data collection techniques used were listening and taking notes. The listening technique in question is listening to the speech contained in the car advertisement in the video and the note-taking technique in question is recording the results of the speech contained in the Tesla electric appliance advertisement on YouTube. The equivalent of the method, which is a means to determine whether the language is outside, separate, and not part of the language in question. While the method of presenting the results of the analysis uses an informal method because the data is in the form of speech. Based on the analysis of perlocutionary speech acts in the Indonesian version of the Tesla electric car promotional video by Prestige Motorcars Indonesia, there are direct perlocutionary speech acts that refer to aspects of sentence meaning; meaning of speech, mode of speech act.

Abstract

In the pragmatics analysis, there are various kinds, one of which is deixis. It takes five forms according to Levinson (1983) that are person deixis (the first person, the second person, and the third person), place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The research was created to analyze the five degenerative forms found in Cruella movie. This research uses descriptive method. The data is drawn from the sentences of the characters in the Cruella movie and analyzed using the theory of Levinson (1983). The results of this research are that deixis consists of five forms, namely: [1] person deixis, consisting of the first people (I, my), the second person (you), and the third person (they), [2] place deixis, which are London and outside, [3] time deixis, which are afternoon, now, and 5:00 a.m., [4] discourse deixis, which are it and that, and [5] social deixis, which is madam.

Abstract

Gestures and speech are significant features that collaborate to create meaning in an interaction. The current study aims to investigate the use of these gestural strategies in English sport TV interviews. This study is based on the hypothesis that interlocutors in TV interviews employ various gesture strategies. The selected interviews have been analyzed in the light of an eclectic model based on model Kulkarni (2013) and Searle (1979). The former is used to analyze the various types of body movements and gesticulation, while the latter is used to analyze gestures as speech acts. The results of the selected interviews revealed that gestural strategies are closely tied to the context of situation. Each gesture performs a specific speech act. The interlocutors in sport interviews express their feelings and attitudes through gestures in an efficient manner. They use gestures to express agreement, openness, sympathy, grief and anxiety. In sport interviews, the interlocutors use gestures freely by moving their hands, arms, heads, and every other part of their bodies.

Abstract

Poetry — as one of literatures, evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm. This qualitative research was conducted through interviews. In addition, there are several interview questions that concern problems in the learning process, namely how to apply poetry during the English learning process, the methods used in the learning process, supporting and inhibiting factors during learning, and a place to increase students’ interest in the field of literature in the use poetry as learning material. The aim is to find out how the teacher uses poetry as learning material in English class. The results of this research, the means and facilities of English teachers to improve the application of literature in Islamic Middle Schools is to hold training that brings in. This method is a new method for memorizing English vocabulary quickly. This strategy is appropriate and in line with research conducted by Yang and Dai (2011) that most students learn English by memorizing as many vocabulary words as possible. Implementation of literature in the classroom focuses more on poetry. Poetry can improve English language skills which include four core things, namely reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Poetry also provides a lot of new knowledge, increases students emotional feelings, and the use of poetry can also arouse students’ enthusiasm.
