Abstract

Career maturity is an important aspect of student development in high school, as they begin to make decisions that affect their future. However, in this digital era, students are faced with various new challenges that affect their career maturity. This study aims to explore the challenges and solutions faced by guidance services in helping students develop career maturity in the digital era. The systematic literature review in this study followed the PRISMA  (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, investigating the impact of career maturity and guidance services on high school students in the digital era. Key areas explored include the role of digital skills, social cognitive career theory (SCCT), and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in career guidance. The findings indicate that digital technology enhances career maturity. While the main challenges include low student awareness of digital skills and lack of technology support. Then there are barriers to technology acceptance, such as perceived difficulty of use and limited technical support. To overcome this, the results of the review suggest integrating digital skills training and tailored support for students and counselors. This approach aims to foster career maturity in students, which is in line with the demands of an increasingly digital workforce.

Abstract

Dysthymia, or Persistent Depressive Disorder, is a milder form of depression that lasts for years. This condition can cause problems in daily life and a decreased quality of life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach proven effective in treating various mood disorders, including dysthymia. This study discusses the case of a 17-year-old female adolescent diagnosed with dysthymia and with an IQ of 70, thus categorized as borderline intellectual functioning. Symptoms that appeared were suicidal thoughts, hopelessness, low self-confidence, and fatigue. The client's condition was worsened by limited problem-solving abilities and inflexible thinking patterns. The assessments used were the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI), SSCT (Sack's Sentence Completion Test), CFIT (Culture Fair Intelligence Test), and Graphic Tests (BAUM, DAP, HTP) which were used to determine the client's cognitive and emotional functioning. The intervention was structured, focusing on emotional regulation, cognitive restructuring, and improving coping skills. The intervention was repeated and simplified according to the client's understanding and interests. Results showed improvements in emotional regulation and social skills, improved self-perception, and reduced suicidal thoughts. These results indicate that CBT is effective and can be adapted for borderline intellectual functioning clients with dysthymia using simpler methods.

Abstract

This study aimed to contribute guidance and counselling approaches to character building among students in public secondary schools in Kinondoni Municipality, Tanzania. The study used a mixed research approach and a cross-sectional survey design. A sample size of 528, including secondary school teachers, students, heads of schools, and parents. From the findings, it is evident that 60% of the teachers employed dynamic interactions of a group of students’ approach, which aids in shaping and managing the behavior of students. Therefore, teachers tend to impose things on the students rather than making use of dialogue since they do not understand the environment created by students. The challenges recognized by the respondents were found to be the lack of separate counselling offices and necessary equipment, the absence of professionally trained guidance and counselling personnel, clear rules and guidelines and the lack of support from stakeholders. Last but not least, the study revealed that guidance and counselling are important to students and teachers; hence, they create a good relationship between students and teachers in school.

Abstract

Violence against women and girls in Nigeria has reached disturbing proportions, manifesting in various forms such as domestic abuse, rape, sexual harassment, forced marriages, and other harmful practices. This increasing scourge of physical violence and killings of women and girls for money-making rituals has further destabilised the lopsided gender balance in Nigeria, with the female gender being the most extraordinary sole victim. Violence against women and girls in Nigeria has become a serious contemporary problem that has to be addressed. Nigerian must create a new culture where women and girls are secured and valued by interrogating the underlying causes of violence, identifying its terrible impact on victims, and proffering preventive measures beyond legislations and public condemnations as well as, examine the existing legal frameworks that is targeted solely on meted minimum punishment on offenders, with no provision for compensation for the victims. Despite existing legal frameworks, public advocacy, and widespread media condemnation, the prevalence of gender-based violence continues to rise, revealing significant gaps in the effectiveness of current interventions. This study explores the imperatives of curbing the growing incidence of violence against women and girls in Nigeria by examining options that go beyond laws, sympathy, and media outrage. The study employs a qualitative approach, drawing insights from existing literature and policy reports to identify structural, cultural, and socio-economic drivers of violence against women and girls. The study finds that while legal instruments are necessary, they are insufficient in isolation from other measures. Therefore, sustainable solutions must include community-based education, empowerment programs for women, reform of traditional and religious institutions, rehabilitation of perpetrators, and the transformation of societal norms that normalise violence. The study concludes that a multidimensional, preventive, and participatory approach is essential to effectively curb the growing menace of violence against women and girls in Nigeria.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the awareness and readiness of Nigerian counsellors to propagate counselling services via social media platforms to attain national goals in the era of technology. The study used a descriptive research design and a mixed-method approach to collect and analyse data from Nigerian Counsellors in tertiary institutions. The study found that while Nigerian counsellors are generally familiar with social media platforms and tools, there are barriers to usage, such as poor internet connectivity, lack of training and support, and cultural and religious concerns. The study's findings highlight the potential benefits of social media use in promoting counselling services in Nigeria, including increased collaboration among counsellors and the ability to reach a wider audience, especially in remote areas. The study recommends providing training and support to educators with limited digital literacy skills and the need to address cultural and religious concerns that may impede the adoption of social media for counselling services and purposes. Overall, this study's findings suggest that social media has the potential to play a significant role in promoting counselling services in Nigeria. However, there is a need to address barriers to usage and provide appropriate training and support to counsellors.
