Abstract

Poultry agribusiness is a key driver of food security and rural economic development in developing countries. However, the sector remains vulnerable to infectious diseases such as avian influenza and Newcastle disease, which can disrupt production systems and supply chain continuity. Although previous studies have examined poultry disease control, biosecurity, and supply chain disruption, evidence on how risk and crisis communication supports outbreak management and resilience in developing-country poultry agribusiness remains fragmented. This study applied a systematic literature review (SLR) approach under PRISMA guidelines to synthesize risk and crisis communication strategies in poultry disease management and their contribution to supply chain resilience. Only seven relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using the PICO framework. Quality assessment using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), combined with systematic data extraction in Microsoft Excel 2021, was conducted to improve methodological transparency and consistency. The novelty of this review lies in integrating communication strategies, enabling and constraining factors, digital tools, One Health perspectives, and public–private collaboration within a single analytical synthesis. The findings indicate that participatory, transparent, and coordinated communication can support disease prevention and crisis preparedness, particularly when strengthened by stakeholder trust, policy support, training, and accessible information channels. However, limited digital literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and cultural barriers may reduce communication effectiveness. Overall, this review highlights the need for inclusive communication systems and collaborative governance to strengthen poultry supply chain resilience in developing countries, while recognizing that the small evidence base limits broad generalization.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of different levels of beef liver addition on the nutritional, physicochemical, and color characteristics of chicken patties. Beef liver, an underutilized animal by-product with high nutritional value, was incorporated at different levels (0%, 20%, 40%, and 60%) into chicken patty formulations. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and five replications. The collected data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that the addition of beef liver had no significant effect (P>0.05) on protein content, water activity (aw), and b* values, but had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on moisture content, fat content, cooking loss, texture, and color characteristics (L* and a*). Increasing beef liver levels improved the nutritional profile and modified the physical and visual characteristics of the patties. These findings demonstrate the potential of beef liver as a value-added functional ingredient for developing nutritious chicken patties while promoting the sustainable utilization of underutilized livestock by-products.

Abstract

Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) is an insect with considerable potential for organic waste bioconversion and sustainable protein production. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of fermented coconut dregs combined with fermented chicken manure on the size of prepupae, pupae, adult BSF, and abdominal development. The research was conducted using a laboratory experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of five substrate formulations. Parameters observed included body length, width, and weight of prepupae, pupae, adult BSF, and abdominal dimensions. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the different combinations of fermented coconut dregs and fermented chicken manure did not significantly affect (P > 0.05) the length, width, or weight of prepupae, pupae, adult BSF, or abdominal size. Although numerical differences were observed among treatments, the variation was not statistically significant. The treatment containing 90% fermented coconut dregs and 10% fermented chicken manure tended to produce higher values for several prepupal and pupal growth parameters, while the treatment containing 80% fermented coconut dregs and 20% fermented chicken manure tended to produce larger abdominal dimensions. These findings indicate that the tested substrate combinations were able to support BSF development, but none provided a statistically superior effect on morphometric characteristics. Further studies with broader nutritional variations and larger sample sizes are recommended to better understand the influence of substrate composition on BSF growth and development.

Abstract

The increasing generation of organic waste has highlighted the need for sustainable bioconversion technologies, including the use of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae as efficient decomposers. This study evaluated the effects of fermented coconut pulp (FCP) and fermented rumen contents (FRC) as rearing substrates on the morphometric characteristics of BSF prepupae, pupae, and imago. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five substrate formulations and 40 replications per treatment was applied. Morphometric parameters, including body length, body width, body weight, and adult abdominal dimensions, were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results indicated that different substrate formulations did not significantly affect any morphometric parameter (P > 0.05). Nevertheless, numerical variations were observed, with the substrate containing 85% FCPand 15% FRC (T3) tending to produce greater body dimensions, while the substrate containing 80% FCPand 20% FRC (T4) showed the greatest abdominal width. Overall, fermented coconut pulp, either alone or combined with fermented rumen contents, provided comparable nutritional conditions that supported normal BSF growth and development. These findings suggest that both organic waste materials can serve as promising alternative substrates for sustainable BSF cultivation and organic waste bioconversion.

Abstract

Spatial utilization constitutes a critical dimension of regional development, frequently characterized by discrepancies between planned spatial structures and their empirical realization on the ground. This study aims to evaluate the degree of conformity between the 2023–2043 spatial pattern plan and the existing agricultural land use in Babulu District, Penajam Paser Utara Regency. The methodological framework employs a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial analysis approach through overlay techniques integrating spatial pattern planning maps with agricultural land use data derived from satellite imagery interpretation, particularly Sentinel-2A imagery. The research procedures encompass data processing, on-screen digitization, overlay analysis, and field verification to assess the accuracy level of land use interpretation results. The findings indicate that the total area of existing agricultural land use covers 8,235.54 hectares, of which 7,898.61 hectares are classified as conforming areas, while 336.94 hectares are non-conforming. Sebakung Jaya Village exhibits the largest extent of conforming agricultural land, reaching 1,422.42 hectares (99.96%), whereas the highest degree of agricultural land-use inconsistency occurs in Gunung Makmur Village (197.97 hectares or 34.33% of its existing area). The accuracy assessment based on Groundcheck verification yielded an accuracy value of 83.3% for the agricultural class based on 12 observation points. Several factors contributing to spatial non-conformity include expansion of built-up areas driven by population growth, lack of synchronization with the latest village development, and weak zoning regulation enforcement. The study concludes that while agricultural space protection in Babulu District is relatively strong, local inconsistencies require immediate integration into the upcoming detailed spatial plan (RDTR) to support food security in the new national capital (IKN) buffer zone

Abstract

The growing trend toward a healthy lifestyle has driven increased consumer interest in organic food products, including organic chicken. This study aims to analyze the influence of product knowledge, health consciousness, and price affordability on the intention to purchase organic chicken in Malang City. Data were collected from 100 respondents using a structured Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression with IBM SPSS Statistics 22. The study population consisted of the general public in Malang City who serve as household food purchase decision-makers, with sampling conducted using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling technique across five subdistricts. The results showed that health consciousness and price affordability had a positive and significant effect on purchase intention (Sig. 0.000), whereas product knowledge did not have a significant effect on purchase intention (Sig. 0.967). This indicates that consumers rely more on health-oriented motivations than on technical product knowledge. An Adjusted R-Square value of 0.741 indicates that the three independent variables collectively explain 74.1% of the variation in purchase intention. These findings reveal that the organic chicken market in Malang is a niche market driven primarily by families with stable incomes and young, independent consumers. The practical implications of this study emphasize the importance of expanding product distribution and implementing health-value-based marketing communication strategies to convert consumer hesitation into actual purchase intent.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of Arabica coffee extract supplementation in a skim milk–egg yolk extender on sperm motility, viability, abnormality, and plasma membrane integrity in Boer goat semen. Semen was collected once weekly using an artificial vagina. A randomized block design with five treatments and four replicates was used: skim milk–egg yolk extender without coffee extract (P0) and extender supplemented with 0.2 (P1), 0.4 (P2), 0.6 (P3), or 0.8 mL (P4) of Arabica coffee extract. Semen was evaluated macroscopically for pH, volume, color, odor, and consistency and microscopically for motility, viability, abnormality, and plasma membrane integrity. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance using SPSS, followed by Duncan’s multiple range test. Fresh semen had a mean pH of 6.45 ± 0.55 and a volume of 1.175 ± 0.204 mL; it was yellowish white, had a characteristic odor, and exhibited a thick consistency. Arabica coffee extract supplementation significantly affected all microscopic parameters (p < 0.001). The 0.6 mL treatment (P3) produced the highest motility (74.50 ± 5.26%), viability (87.25 ± 6.34%), and plasma membrane integrity (90.00 ± 3.46%) and the lowest abnormality (17.00 ± 8.28%). These findings indicate that supplementation with 0.6 mL of Arabica coffee extract may improve the quality of Boer goat semen extended with skim milk–egg yolk.

Abstract

Customary communities govern forests and water through institutions embedded in everyday practice. This study examines how such institutions organize resource use and support social ecological resilience in Kasepuhan Gelar Alam, West Java, Indonesia. An exploratory qualitative case study involved semistructured interviews with 22 purposively selected participants, with interview sessions lasting approximately 40 to 60 minutes, alongside observation and field documentation. Thematic analysis examined customary authority, role distribution, forest zoning, water allocation, collective labour, knowledge of natural boundaries, and moral sanctions. Findings reveal an integrated governance system. Forest access is differentiated among hutan garapan (cultivation forest), hutan titipan (entrusted forest), and hutan tutupan (protected forest). Water for rice fields is organized through ulu-ulu or maningtim, conveyed through susukan, and maintained through gotong royong. Hukum cowal discourages monopolization, while kebendon, pamali, and kualat reinforce compliance through internalized moral responsibility. These arrangements connect forest protection, irrigation, rice production, reciprocity, and intergenerational obligations. Rather than demonstrating measured ecological outcomes, the study identifies institutional mechanisms through which the community regulates access, coordinates maintenance, and sustains continuity amid change. Customary governance can contribute to resilience when rules are locally legitimate, responsibilities are distributed, and resource use remains tied to reciprocal obligations. Policy engagement should recognize customary knowledge and authority without romanticizing or administratively simplifying living institutions.
