Abstract

The pluralist digital age presents a fundamental challenge to Christian apologetics, demanding a model that goes beyond traditional propositional argumentation. The epistemological environment of the internet, characterized by a thirst for novelty, flat authority, and fragmented personal narratives, often renders classical apologetic approaches ineffective. This study aims to construct a contextually relevant model of apologetics by performing a narrative exegesis of Paul's speech on the Areopagus in Acts 17:22–31. Using a qualitative method based on narrative criticism, this study analyzes the rhetorical and theological strategies used by Paul as described by Luke. The results of the study show that Paul did not simply accommodate or confront Hellenistic philosophy, but applied the strategy of "Narrative Subversion" to enter the mindset of his audience, retelling their narrative from within, and offering it to the truth of the Gospel. The results obtained from this study are that the "Areopagus Model", which is based on the strategy of Narrative subversion, is based on four principles: compassionate engagement, identification of an altar to a God unknown in culture, and dialogical posture. This model offers a powerful framework for contemporary apologetics, capable of meaningfully interacting with digital culture without compromising the core of the Christian message.

Abstract

Supervision in ministry is an essential aspect of developing and improving the performance quality of church ministers such as Elders, Pastors, Deacons, and Sunday School teachers. This article examines the concepts, purposes, strategies, and challenges of ministry supervision within the Indonesian church context, with a particular focus on the ONKP Church (Orahua Niha Keriso Protestan) as the primary object of study. Within the ONKP Church, supervision is understood as a pastoral process that not only guides the spiritual growth of church workers but also supports their professional development in accordance with ONKP’s organizational structure and ministerial traditions. Through planned, contextual, and continuous supervision, the quality of teaching and ministry can be significantly enhanced amid the dynamics of ONKP congregations spread across various regions. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to evaluate the effectiveness of supervision in developing ministry workers within the ONKP Church. The findings indicate that supervision contributes substantially to improving both the spiritual and professional competence of ONKP ministers, particularly when implemented through reflective guidance, ongoing evaluation, and strong community support. However, challenges such as limited human resources, the diverse contexts of ONKP congregations, and insufficient understanding of supervision as an integral component of ministerial formation remain significant obstacles. These findings highlight the need for a more systematic and adaptive supervisory model to strengthen ministry quality within the ONKP Church.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of the command in 1 John 3:18, which emphasizes that love must be demonstrated through deeds and truth, not merely words or tongue. As the core teaching of the Apostle John—the “apostle of love”—this verse is relevant in the historical context of the early Christian community facing false teachings, where genuine love needed to be distinguished from empty rhetoric. The study's purpose is to explore the theological and practical implications of this verse, focusing on the manifestation of authentic love through concrete actions, emulating Christ's sacrifice. Believers are called to demonstrate love through concrete concern for the needy, including counsel, rebuke, and warnings that encourage growth in righteousness, not cover up errors. An exegetical analysis of the verse and context of 1 John finds that God's love is active, sincere, and aligned with biblical teaching. Conclusion: Love is a concrete commitment that reflects divine truth, challenging believers to live it out in all aspects of life.

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of “convenant” in the Old Testament as the main framework for the relationship between God and His people. In Hebrew, convenant is called berith, and in Greek, diatheke, which indicates that a convenant is not only a legal bond, but also a reflection of God’s love and faithfulness to mankind. These convenants incolve several figures, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, who share a common thread og God’s faithfulness in carrying out His plan of salvation for His people. Each convenant highlights various theological aspects, namely creation, salvation, elction, law, and kingdom. Thus, this article helps readers see that all these conevnants are fulfilles in Jesus Christ through the new convenant, where God’s law is no longer written on stone, but in the hearts of men. This study affirms that the convenant is the main foundation of biblical theology, which shows the relationship between God’s grace and man’s responsibility to live in obedience.

Abstract

This study analyzes the theological meaning of simplicity and holiness based on 1 Timothy 2:9 through a contextual hermeneutical approach and lexical analysis. This verse instructs women to dress “modestly and modestly, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothing,” in the context of first-century Ephesus influenced by the cult of Artemis and the “new Roman woman,” where the opulence of ostentatious appearance interferes with Christian worship. The lexical analysis of katastolē (modest clothing) and kosmios (modest/orderly) shows simplicity as an anti-materialist rejection of worldly vanity, prioritizing spiritual focus over externals. Holiness is related to aidos (godly humility) and sōphrosynē (self-control/moderation), reflecting a transformed heart, spiritual identity, and socio-spiritual harmony. Contemporary implications transcend gender/culture, encouraging all believers to counter consumerism/social media with humility, resource stewardship, and Christ-honoring witness through inner integrity.

Abstract

This article examines the contextualisation of the Gospel within the Aluk Todolo tradition by conducting a historical and theological analysis of the Dutch Zending mission in Tana Toraja. The proclamation of the Gospel in the early 20th century did not occur in isolation, but rather encountered a system of beliefs and local culture that was already deeply ingrained in the lives of the Toraja people. Through a descriptive qualitative approach and a literature review, this study examines the characteristics of Aluk Todolo, the process of the Gospel’s introduction, and the missionary strategies adopted by the Gereformeerde Zendingsbond (GZB), particularly through the figure of Antonie Aris van de Loosdrecht. The research findings indicate that the proclamation of the Gospel was carried out in a contextual manner through the use of the local language, the translation of theological concepts such as ‘Puang Matua’, and educational and social methods that respected local cultural values. The interaction between the Gospel and Aluk Todolo created a dynamic that was not merely adversarial, but also dialogical and transformative. This adaptation allowed the Gospel to be accepted without entirely erasing the Toraja cultural identity. This study emphasises that a mission approach that is contextually appropriate and sensitive to local culture is vital in conveying the Gospel in a relevant and meaningful way within the community.

Abstract

This research focuses on the exploitation of women and children by their own parents. This research focuses on the hermeneutics of biblical texts that tend to discriminate against women and children. The qualitative research method uses a literature study approach with an ideological criticism approach, which is divided into three stages, namely, dominant ideology, counter-ideology, and alternative ideology as a solution to the inequality of justice in the text. Next, the author conducted a literature study as a data collection method to process the research material. The author uses information sources obtained from the literature in the form of reference books, the Bible, journals, and dictionaries. This is an attempt to rediscover the textual messages contained in the Bible, which are connected to the present day to see and raise the experiences, struggles, and struggles of women and children towards liberation from male-centered biblical texts. From the results of the interpretation, several dominant ideologies were found, namely patriarchy, extreme survivalism, the normalization of domestic sexual violence, scapegoating against women, and ethnic exclusivism. From this, the author proposes an alternative ideology as a middle way to address the problems found. The alternatives offered are the ideology of restoring human dignity, the ideology of trauma awareness, the ideology of relational responsibility, and the ideology of human solidarity. Ultimately, all of these alternative ideologies culminate in the formation of a transformative theology of life, one that reads texts not simply as documents of the past but as sources of critical reflection to confront the realities of violence and injustice in the present.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of a theological crisis within the Indonesian church ecosystem, particularly the trivialization of the cross, where the pulpit often reduces the essence of suffering to mere rhetorical embellishment and a prosperity theology that is purely anthropocentric. The primary objective of this study is to uncover the original exegetical meaning of the text 1 Corinthians 1:18–25, construct a comprehensive biblical theology regarding the doctrine of the cross, and develop a contemporary restorative homiletic paradigm. This study employs a qualitative method through a triadic integrative approach, namely historical-grammatical exegesis, biblical theology of the history of redemption, and the empirical analytical framework of the four tasks of practical theology. The main findings of the study demonstrate that the message of the cross is a radical antithesis to worldly wisdom, functioning as an eschatological demarcation sword that shatters the arrogance of human rationality. The findings indicate that pastors and church councils must absolutely deconstruct managerial pragmatism and return to the expository homiletic model in order to restore spiritual depth, the integrity of ministry, and its prophetic relevance in the current era of digital advancement.

Abstract

Revelation 21:1 is one of the biblical texts that presents eschatological hope through the imagery of “a new heaven and a new earth.” This passage is often misunderstood as a description of believers escaping from the world into heaven, leading to a neglect of earthly reality. Therefore, this article aims to examine the theological meaning of Revelation 21:1 by emphasizing the concept of the renewal of creation as the core of Christian eschatological hope. This study employs a qualitative method through a literature review of Indonesian theological journals that discuss the Book of Revelation, particularly from theological, socio-political, and symbolic perspectives. The study finds that Revelation 21:1 does not describe the total destruction of the world, but rather the complete restoration of creation that has been damaged by sin and injustice. The expressions “the first heaven and the first earth have passed away” and “the sea was no more” are understood symbolically as the end of the old order characterized by suffering, chaos, and oppression. Furthermore, this text reflects the fulfillment of Old Testament promises and serves as encouragement for early Christian communities living under social and political pressure during the Roman Empire. Thus, Revelation 21:1 presents an eschatological hope that is active and contextual, rather than an escape from worldly reality. This hope calls believers to remain faithful and persevering while viewing the future as the total restoration of creation under God’s sovereign reign.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamic relationship between church and state through the ideas of Reformers such as Matin Luther, John Calvin, and Huldrych Zwingli, as they relate to their understanding of public authority. This study employs are analyzed descriptively, historically, and comparatively. The findings reveal that each of the three Reformers adopted a distinct approach. Luther emphasized the doctrineof the two kingdoms, distinguishing beetwen spiritual and secular authority, both of which are subyek to God’s sovereignty. Calvin described the complementary duality of governmental functions between church and state without dimishing the authority of either. Zwingli, on the other hand, developed an integrative approach that unites the roles of church and state in shaping the social order. These differences demonstrate that there is no single model for the relationship between church and state, but rather various approaches influenced by social, political, and theological contexts. Therefore, the ideas of the Reformers have made a significant contribution to the further development of understanding regarding the relationship between church and state in the modern context.
