Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : 1) the motivations influencing Kitty Pong to becoming a social climber in China Rich Girlfriend (2015), 2) how the power of connection in China Rich Girlfriend (2015) can be used to gain high social status. This research uses a qualitative method to analyze the novel China Rich Girlfriend (2015) written by Kevin Kwan as the object of study. The data collection methods include reading, identifying, and selecting. The researcher utilizes A. H. Maslow’s theory of the hierarchy of needs, Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social capital, and John Storey’s theory of consumption to analyze the data through steps of classifying, analyzing, and interpreting. The result of this research shows that the motivations influencing Kitty Pong to becoming a social climber in China Rich Girlfriend (2015) including want to acquire high status, recognized by influential people, accepted by the society, and acquire power. The power of connection in China Rich Girlfriend (2015) that Kitty Pong can use to gain high social status including economic, cultural, and social capital, also cultural fields, and habitus. The impacts of a social climber in China Rich Girlfriend (2015) including impacts in economic, psychological, and social life.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ vocabulary through the use of audio-lingual method by using WordUp application at MA Al-Fatah Gondang in the eleventh grade. The data were collected using a mixed-method approach, including interviews and tests. This study uses an intact-group comparison design where the researcher divides the eleventh grade into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. In its application, the experimental group uses the audio-lingual method by using WordUp application while the control group uses other methods and is carried out in one cycle, namely pre-test, treatment, post-test. The results of the study show that the use of the audio-lingual method by using WordUp application can improve students’ vocabulary because this method successfully motivates students to continue learning vocabulary. The audio feature makes students aware that their pronunciation is still lacking and the example sentences in each word help students’ motivation and confidence to continue learning vocabulary. The students’ vocabulary has increased, as shown by test scores from pre-test to post-test. Therefore, the audio-lingual method by using WordUp application are considered effective in improving students’ vocabulary and fostering motivation to learn English.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of sarcasm as a satirical tool in the film “The Dictator” (2012) starring Sacha Baron Cohen. This study aims to identify the types of sarcasm used in the film and how the audience responds to the sarcasm. The research method used is qualitative analysis using pragmatic and semantic theories to understand how sarcasm is used as an effective satirical tool. The results of the study indicate that there are four types of sarcasm used in the film, namely lexical sarcasm, “like”-prefixed sarcasm, illocutionary sarcasm, and propositional sarcasm. The audience’s response to the sarcasm varies, including off-record politeness responses, confrontational responses, and ignoring sarcasm. This study shows that sarcasm can be used as an effective satirical tool to criticize power and dominant ideologies in society in a humorous and ironic way. Thus, this study can contribute to the understanding of the role of sarcasm in communication and social criticism.

Abstract

This study discusses feminist values and the representation of women’s empowerment in the film Nyad (2023). The film is based on the true story of Diana Nyad, a woman who attempts to fulfill her lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida at the age of 60. This research aims to find out how feminist values are represented in the film and how women’s empowerment is shown through the main character. The theory used in this research is Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist theory, especially the idea that women are often seen as “the Other.” This study applies a descriptive qualitative method, with the main data taken from dialogues in the film. The data were collected by watching, identifying, classifying, and analyzing scenes related to feminist values and acts of empowerment. The results show six feminist values in the film, namely equality, resistance, agency, solidarity, empowerment, and self-determination. The film also shows how Diana fights against age limitations, public doubt, and social pressure. The film delivers a message that women deserve to be heard, respected, and given equal opportunities in life.

Abstract

This thesis explores the types and functions of figurative language in the Lover album on the Spotify platform. Figurative language is a style of language that is not conveyed directly, but rather through beautiful and meaningful ways to reinforce the message and convey feelings more emotionally. The study identifies various types of figurative language, including similes, metaphors, personification, symbolism, metonymy, apostrophe, and others. These are used not only to enrich the poetic quality of the lyrics but also to deliver deeper meanings. The functions of figurative language are observed to create vivid imagery, to make abstract ideas more concrete, to emphasize important ideas, and to add emotional intensity. The study concludes that Taylor Swift uses figurative language to convey complex feelings and themes of life that many people can relate to in beautiful songs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze: (1) the representation of social class reflected in Tulip Fever (2017), and (2) the marriage of Sophia in Tulip Fever (2017) portrayed as a reflection of class struggle. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film Tulip Fever, directed by Justin Chadwick, as the object of research. The data collection technique includes watching, transcribing, identifying, classifying, and selecting scenes and dialogues related to social class and marriage. The data analysis involves displaying, interpreting, and relating findings to Marxist literary criticism. The theory is used to understand how power, ideology, and class structure influence character interactions. The result of the study show that: (1) social class is clearly represented through characters, spaces, and power dynamics, such as the contrast between the bourgeoisie (Cornelis) and working-class characters (Maria, Willem); and (2) Sophia’s marriage is portrayed not as an emotional choice but as an economic strategy shaped by class oppression. Her failed attempt to rebel reflects the limited autonomy of lower-class women under a capitalist structure.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze: (1) how traumatic experiences become the trigger for Cheryl Strayed’s journey in Wild (2014), and (2) how her self-transformation is reflected in the film, using Abraham Maslow’s theory of human needs. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method with the film Wild (2014) as the primary data source. Data were collected through observation, transcription of dialogues, classification of scenes, and interpretation based on psychological theory. The analysis reveals that Cheryl's personal traumas such as the death of her mother, drug use, and a failed marriage become the main motivations for her solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. Throughout the film, Cheryl gradually fulfills Maslow’s five levels of human needs, from physiological needs to self-actualization. The findings conclude that Wild is a narrative not only of physical survival but also of psychological healing and identity reconstruction.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays a vital role in supporting students' language skills, especially in English learning at the elementary school level. However, many students still struggle with memorizing and understanding English vocabulary due to monotonous and conventional teaching methods. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using English songs as a teaching medium to improve students’ vocabulary mastery and learning motivation. It employed a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design involving all fifth-grade students of MI Ma’arif Surengede Kertek in the academic year 2024/2025, using total sampling technique. The experimental class was taught using several English songs by DJ Raphi, such as Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes, Move It, Superstar, and If You're Happy and You Know it, while the control class was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and observation sheets, then analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25 covering validity, reliability, normality, homogeneity, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test. The analysis results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s post-test scores compared to both their pre-test scores and the control group’s scores, confirming that the use of English songs effectively enhances students’ vocabulary mastery and learning motivation, with statistical tests.
