Abstract

This article presents the study result of error analysis on English sounds pronunciation produced by Indonesian students studying at Faculty of Language and Literature of Universitas Sains Al-Qur’an (UNSIQ). Students had many problems related to adapt English sound system as they learnt English in the class. The Focus of this study is to analyze the pronunciation errors of English vowel sound namely ‘schwa’ which is symbolized as /ə/ in phonetic writing based on IPA (International Phonetic Association). This study applies qualitative research methodology. In collecting the data, the researcher attempted to arrange and compile schwa sound utterances in a text and give the text to be read by students. Through the step of listening and recording the students’ pronunciation, the researcher eventually got the data source to be analyzed. The methods of analyzing the collected data, among others are, listening to the student’s pronunciation, making notes of pronunciation errors made by students, and analyzing the problems of mispronunciation of English schwa produced by students. The result of the study shows that English schwa sounds produced by the students are affected by the student’s habit of speaking in their colloquial language of their mother tongue. Even though in Indonesian language they have such a schwa sound, however, it does not mean that they alert with correct pronunciation as they were examined to read the given utterances in correlation with pronouncing test of English schwa sound. Abstract

Ritual cukur rambut gimbal or dreadlocks shaving ritual is tradition ritual which is done by people who live in Dieng plateau. The ritual is inherited from ancestor of the Dieng people, Kiai Kolodete. This ritual aims to eliminate the dreads in children which done based on Javanese calendar calculation. This paper aims to find out the relationship between the ritual and myth and Dieng people’s belief. Finding out the good and correct ritual procession based on empirical facts of the local community is the goal of this research as well. Parikesit is the village which is located in Kejajar sub-district, Wonosobo in Dieng plateau. There are some children with the dreadlocks who live in the village. Therefore, its people still maintain the ritual well. Parikesit is chosen to collect the information about the ritual of this research by interviewing its people. Meanwhile, this research also uses some books to define the myth and the ritual. Dreadlocks shaving ritual is done as a form of praying to dreads in children do not grow anymore. This ritual is done differently in every village in Dieng plateau. There are some communities with Javanese belief (Kejawen) held the ritual in Arjuna temple area with Javanese tradition and the ritual also held by other communities at their own home like other traditional party based on their religion (slametan). This ritual basically has same essence which is to pray and fulfill the desires of the children (who will be shaved) which is an absolute requirement.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the translation shift which happen in Indonesian translation of Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. The researcher focuses on analyzing the parts of speech shift on the process of translation from source language (SL) to target language (TL). Reading for both English text and Indonesian translation are conducted to get the deepest understanding between them. The researcher takes the data randomly and displays the data which is found. The data is then comprehensively analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study shows that based on parts of speech shift analysis, it is found that the translator uses that shift (pronoun can be translated into noun, adjective into verb and noun, noun into adjective and verb) to find the equivalence of meaning between source language (SL) to target language (TL).

Abstract

This study elaborates the utterances spoken by Tsunami's Victim in Central Celebes. It focuses on the exclamatory speech acts. There are kinds of utterances cried by victim especially video or audio taker when the tsunami occurred in the end of September 2018. The disaster destroys the city of Palu, Donggala regency, Parigi Moutong Regency, and Mamuju Utara Regency of Central Celebes. This study is expected to get the kind of Illocutionary Speech Acts especially illocutionary acts forces and the function of those. The kinds of illocutionary acts frequently appeared are expressive and declarative. The function of the illocutionary acts in a panic circumstance are informing, commanding, asking, requesting, shouting, wishing, expecting, complimenting as well as blaming.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the case study of multilingualism and bilingualism in three provinces in Java, among others are East Java, Yogyakarta, and Central Java. The people from the three provinces communicate with two or more than languages which causes double-overlapping diglossia phenomenon. The diglossia phenomenon happens in the use of language spoken by the majority and minority people lived in the provinces. This study is qualitative study. The data is collected through library research and the language observation in the field. The study shows that the language shift from Javanese to Bahasa Indonesia happens in the Javanese society. Kromo Inggil is rarely used by the society. They tend to shift the language by speaking Bahasa Indonesia for their daily conversation. However, the Javanese language is used in the way the family members communicate each other with their immediate family. Hence, Javanese language can be insured that it will be used by the next generations.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to analyze the symbols of ecofeminism and the reflection of ecofeminism in Chris Wedge’s Epic (2013). In the first problem statement, the researcher analyzes some symbols of ecofeminism and the second, the researcher explains the reflection of ecofeminism in animation movie, Epic (2013). The object and primary data of this study is the movie entitled Epic (2013). The researcher applies two main theories, they are Peirce’s semiotics and ecofeminism. This research is kind of descriptive qualitative research. It means that the researcher explains every finding and interprets it based on the theory used. In collecting data, the researcher did steps such as watching movie, selecting primary data, and collecting the secondary data. While in procedure of analysis, the researcher did some steps as like preparing, reading, coding, describing, presenting, and interpreting. As the result, the researcher found that femininity and nature are the symbol of ecofeminism which represented with the existence of woman, flower, forest and animal. The existence of fairies are the sign of human’s nature, by that, ecofeminism is reflected in Epic (2013).

Abstract

This study proposes the revelation of meaning through signification process in a film entitled ‘A Star is Born’ directed by Bradley Cooper and released in 2018. The research intends to discuss the signification process in creating meaning and representation of freedom and loneliness in two major characters. Signification is a process to find meaning and sign is created by generating the matter from objects, images, or sounds. As a qualitative research, this study is conducted by explaining, deciphering, or making representation in order to gain findings. The findings include major signifiers that signify the signification of freedom such as character’s ability to sing and play instruments; and loneliness such as alcohol addiction.

Abstract

Subtitling editor softwares have been widely used as teaching media in education field such as in teaching English. To be more specific, in Subtitling class in IAIN Surakarta, several well-known subtitling editor softwares have been so far implemented by the lecturers as teaching media whereby students can do their tasks in subtitling class. Aegisub is one of those softwares which is used in English Education Department of IAIN Surakarta. This study aims to know the implementation of Aegisub in subtitling class of the fourth semester students of English Education Department, IAIN Surakarta and to learn about the benefits and challenges during the implementation of this subtitling editor use in subtitling class. This study implements descriptive qualitative method. Data was gathered through interviews and questionnaire while data triangulation was used to analyze it. Overall, the results shows that Aegisub is easy to be implemented by the students or user-friedly, having a good operating system compatibility, having a series of Easy-to-Follow Instruction, rich in feature and it also can increase students’ motivation both in doing the subtitling tasks and having the class. Moreover, some challenges were also found in its implementation such as recognizing all the tools or memorizing it during the editing process; difficulty in changing from one tool to another, matching the text of subtitle and the time of video process, and such technical problem like it could not be installed in every operating system and lastly difficulty in inputting the subtitle.

Abstract

This library research paper aims to reveal the author’s world view about American cowboy/cowgirl and the American frontier life. The subject of the study is a novel entitled A Million Ways to Die in the West written by Seth MacFarlane. This research will apply genetic structuralism theory. Furthermore, to understand the context deeper, some supporting data concerning the history of cowboy/cowgirl and the frontier life are also applied. With MacFarlane well known specific writing style, his novel is different and unique, whereby he blends irony as well as humor in it. His world view about cowboy/cowgirl and the frontier life is quite negative although he ends the story with a happy ending. He considers most of the cowboys are brutal, mean, and extravagant. While he considers living in the frontier is tough because the frontier is a kind of uncivilized place to live. His negative view is mostly presented through the representation of some characters’ characterization, especially from the male and female protagonist characters.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explain about how song lyrics in Blurryface album by Twenty One Pilot (2015) reflect the teenager’s anxiety How the teenager’s psychological condition in facing social pressure which in Twenty One Pilot’s song lyrics in Blurryface album (2015) The object and primary data used in this research are some song lyrics of Blurryface album as follows; Stressed Out, Ride, Lane Boy, Polarize, Heavy dirty soul and Doubt which whole the lyrics are written by Joseph Tyler. In conducting the process of the research, the researcher applied theory of psychoanalysis, focusing on teenager’s anxiety. The method applied in this research is qualitative method. The steps are reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. In analyzing data, the researcher uses the steps such as displaying, explaining, and interpreting.
