Abstract

Predictors of Mathematics Performance: An Inductive Approach Towards Theory Generation. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the predictive factors that affect the mathematics performance of the students towards developing a theory. Methods: Quantitative non-experimental method employing correlational approach was used in the study and inductive approach as basis for the theory development. Multiple regression was the main analysis in this study. Random sample students from the English and Communication Department participated in the study. The researcher used three standardized questionnaires, Mathematics and Technology Attitudes Scale (MTAS) and Revised Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (RMARS). Findings: The findings exposed that of the 15 domains, effective communication has the highest mean while self-efficacy has the lowest. This study also discovered that there was a significant difference between the sex and students’ level of anxiety in terms of numerical test anxiety and mathematics course anxiety. The multiple regression also further revealed that of the 15 domains, only instructional planning strategies and effective communication were the best predictors of mathematics performance with regression equations of Y= 1.563 + 0.358X and Y= 1.563 – 0.556X, respectively. Conclusion: This study concluded The level of mathematics performance of the students is multi-factorial in nature which depends on teachers’ delivery, pedagogies, and coping with assessment anxiety. Keywords: mathematics performance, predictive factors, students’ attitude, teachers’ effectiveness, theory generationDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i1.202303

Abstract

Epistemological Beliefs and Academic Performance in Physics of Grade 12 Filipino Stem Learners. Objectives: This descriptive-correlational study investigated the existing relationship of epistemological beliefs to the academic performance in Physics of Filipino STEM learners. It further described the levels of academic performance and sophistication of epistemological beliefs about Physics of the Filipino STEM learners. Methods: This study involved a convenient sample of 407 Grade 12 Filipino STEM learners enrolled in A. Y. 2021-2022. This study used EBAPS to solicit the epistemological views of the students in Physic. Findings: Frequency, mean and standard deviation shown that majority of the students have a very satisfactory academic performance but their epistemological beliefs about Physics are generally poorly sophisticated. Pearson product-moment coefficient revealed that the four non-orthogonal dimensions of epistemological beliefs about Physics (structure of scientific knowledge, nature of knowing and learning, evolving knowledge, source of ability to learn) established significant association to students’ academic performance except real-life applicability. Multiple regression analysis revealed that among five dimensions of epistemological beliefs structure of scientific knowledge and nature of knowing are found to be significant determinants of the students’ academic performance in Physics. Conclusions: It is recommended for the physics teachers to craft an instructional intervention to enhance the students’ epistemological beliefs in physics, which in turns affect the performance of the students in the class. Keywords: academic performance, epistemological beliefs, multiple regression.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i1.202302

Abstract

Achievement Profiles in Math, Science, and English: Exploring Contextualized Sex Differences. Objectives: The study used a person-oriented approach to explore sex differences at the level of achievement profiles and describe such differences in the context of urban/rural schools. Methods: The achievement test scores in math, science and English of 2,408 tenth graders sampled from the database of the Center for Educational Measurement (CEM) in the Philippines  were used to derive achievement profiles through cluster analysis. Findings: Four profiles were derived: 1) Low Achievers, 2) True Average Achievers, 3) High Achievers with weak math and science skills, and 4) High Achievers with strong math and science skills. Significant sex and urban/rural school differences among the profiles were found. The “female advantage” was more evident among Low Achievers, but not among High Achievers. When the urban/rural school context was considered, the female advantage tended to disappear and the urban school advantage became more apparent. Finally, High Achievers with weak math and science skills were mostly females in urban schools. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it was important to situate sex differences in context in order to understand achievement in key courses, such as STEM, of young children. Keywords: sex differences, urban and rural schools, achievement profiles, cluster analysis, FilipinoDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i1.202308

Abstract

Improving Teachers’ Organizational Citizenship Behavior Based on Emotional Intelligence and Psychological Capital. Objectives: This study investigates the effect of emotional intelligence on teachers’ psychological capital (PsyCap) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and how PsyCap mediates emotional intelligence in affecting OCB. Methods: A questionnaire on the Likert rating scale collected data through the survey methods from 250 junior high school teachers in Indonesia. Data analysis uses path analysis supported by descriptive and correlational analysis. Path analysis was performed by Lisrel 8.80, meanwhile descriptive and correlational analysis by SPSS 22. Finding: Emotional intelligence had a significant effect on teachers’ OCB, directly and indirectly, mediated by PsyCap. Besides mediating the effect of emotional intelligence on teachers’ OCB, PsyCap also has a direct effect strongly than emotional intelligence. Hence, it shows the cruciality PsyCap for teachers’ OCB. Conclusion: A model regarding the effect of emotional intelligence on teachers’ OCB, mediated by PsyCap, was confirmed. Accordingly, the researchers and practitioners can discuss, adapt, and adopt an empirical model to improve teachers’ OCB based on emotional intelligence and PsyCap in various researchs fields in the future. Keyword: emotional intelligence, psychological capital, organizational citizenship behavior.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i1.202305
