Abstract

This article discusses whether Jesus as the Messiah means an anointed person; in the view of the Samaritans as well as the Jews it is the same or not. As well as providing an answer to the Jesuit group about the question of where Jesus said He was the Messiah, or why Jesus didn't say the truth about who He really was. This study uses a qualitative approach, and traces the history of the use of the word Messiah, the Jewish understanding of the Messiah, and the Samaritans about Teheb, and ultimately provides an answer from a Christian perspective about why Jesus did not say frankly that He was the Messiah or God incarnate. In the end, I conclude that Jesus was the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament and that the understanding between Jews and Samaritans about Taheb and also the Messiah was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and that He was far beyond the understanding of Jews and Samaritans. The reason why Jesus did not tell the crowd frankly about who He really was because the context of life at the time did not allow Jesus to say that. If Jesus said that He was God or He was the Messiah, it would make the Jews refuse to listen to Him and would consider it blasphemous and would result in rejection.

Abstract

This study examines Christian missions at the intersection of the gospel and Batak Toba traditions, focusing on the Silaban Margu Indonesian Protestant Christian Church (GKPI) in Lintongnihuta. This study is based on the understanding that Batak Toba customs are not merely cultural expressions, but rather a communal value system that governs social relations, life rituals, and the formation of the congregation's faith identity. Customary practices such as mangongkal holi and mangalap tondi provide a concrete space for the encounter between the gospel and culture, which requires critical and responsible theological assessment. This study attempts to examine the relationship between the gospel and tradition, identify normative tensions in church practice, and formulate a direction for contextual mission strategies. The research method used is interpretive qualitative with a missiological and anthropological approach through literature study and interviews with purposively sampled church elders and local traditional leaders, selected based on their direct involvement in religious and customary practice. This study emphasizes the importance of dialogical contextual mission where the gospel plays a role as incarnational praxis rooted in a communal rural context. These findings enrich the discourse on rural church missiology in Indonesia and offer a reflective framework for GKPI in formulating contextual and theologically pastoral sustainable mission practices.

Abstract

The theological position of John Wesley has long been debated, particularly regarding its affinity with Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which similarly emphasizes human transformation toward holiness. Although international scholarship has explored this relationship, a systematic theological evaluation of Wesley's thought from an Eastern Orthodox perspective remains scarce, especially within the context of Indonesian theological studies. This study aims to critically analyze the principal theological doctrines of John Wesley and evaluate them from the perspective of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Employing a qualitative library research approach, the study examines John Wesley's writings, Holy Scripture, Wesleyan theological literature, the writings of the Church Fathers, and major Eastern Orthodox theological sources through descriptive and comparative analysis. The novelty of this research lies in its systematic engagement between the Wesleyan-Nazarene theological tradition and Eastern Orthodox theology within Indonesian academic discourse, while applying Holy Tradition, the teachings of the Church Fathers, and the Ecumenical Councils as evaluative theological criteria. The findings reveal significant theological convergences, particularly concerning divine love, human free will, moral transformation, and growth in holiness. Nevertheless, substantial differences remain regarding the authority of Holy Tradition, the doctrine of original sin, the theological function of religious experience, and the understanding of salvation. The study concludes that Wesley's theology demonstrates a closer affinity to Eastern Orthodox Christianity than many other Protestant traditions, yet it cannot be fully identified with Eastern Orthodoxy because fundamental structural differences require continued critical theological evaluation.
