Abstract

Bullying is also called bullying, which is still one of the problems affecting children in Indonesia with serious impacts on both the perpetrators and the victims. Some of this happens to elementary school children, who should be at an age where they develop their emotional intelligence and empathy that can be influenced by their environment. To solve this problem, an approach consisting of various steps is needed. By prioritizing aspects such as sensory experience, architecture has the power to deeply influence emotions and behavior. This method does not only use punishment but also acts proactively to encourage better behavior. This study aims to find the influence of architecture in forming a child-friendly environment in terms of psychology. A case study at MI Khoirul Huda indicates that designing a learning environment that accommodates aspects of safety, comfort, and sensory stimulation makes a significant contribution to the formation of emotional intelligence in children. However, there are still several design elements that need to be optimized so that the quality of the space truly supports the process of psychological and emotional development of students as a whole. This study uses a qualitative method with primary data collected through observation techniques on the study object of the MI Khoirul Huda Education building. The results of this study indicate that architectural design can have a good or bad impact on the emotional intelligence of elementary school children.

Abstract

The spatial atmosphere in the architectural realm is defined by Gernot Böhme as the quality perceived by the user of the space through sensory experience. This sensory experience serves as an indicator of the success of architectural design. However, the theory provided still needs to be studied through more empirical architectural planning cases. Through the evaluation of the performance of the Nur Andakara Mosque building, this study focuses on understanding the variables that form the atmosphere and its generators in the three atmospheric characters proposed by Böhme: impression of motion, synaesthesia, and social character. The relationship between the elements that form the space and the atmosphere that appears is studied to provide a complete picture of the performance of a building built with a certain design intensity. The results of this study identify the elements of the building planned into the three characters, along with their impact on the quality of the design, in terms of the impression of motion formed by the accessibility elements in the building. The use of materials and thermal control operations becomes synaesthetic characters. Processing the shape of both the exterior and interior into social characters. The results of this study contribute to the design strategy in similar design cases, enabling them to achieve the quality of the spatial atmosphere.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the meaning of Tallu Lino as a cosmological foundation in shaping the traditional architecture of the Duri people, particularly in Bola (residences) and Landa’ (rice barns) in Kampong Pepandungan, Enrekang Regency. Tallu Lino, consisting of Lino Jiong (underworld), Lino Tau (middle world), and Lino Jao (upper world), is believed to form a cosmological framework that influences spatial structure, building orientation, and the relationship between domestic and storage spaces. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach through field observations, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation. The findings show that Tallu Lino principles are reflected in the vertical spatial arrangement, the separation of functions between Bola and Landa’, and building orientation aligned with cosmic symbolism. This concept not only shapes physical structures but also embeds spiritual and sociocultural values. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding local cosmology as a foundation for preserving traditional architecture and guiding spatial planning based on indigenous wisdom.

Abstract

Adequate lighting is a crucial factor in ensuring visual comfort and supporting productivity, especially in academic environments. This study aims to identify areas with insufficient artificial lighting and simulate lighting solutions using DIALux software in the corridors of the Muhammad Nu’man Somantri Building at FPIPS Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method through direct observation and visual documentation. The findings indicate that corridors on floors 1 to 5 exhibit artificial lighting levels below the standards set by SNI 03-6575-2001 (350 lux for learning areas), particularly on the right side of the second-floor corridor and in areas on the third and sixth floors that lack natural lighting. The DIALux simulation demonstrates that lighting distribution can be improved through repositioning of lighting points and the use of more reflective wall colors to enhance visual comfort for building users.

Abstract

Mosques serve not only as places of worship but also as centers of social activity for Muslim communities. However, many mosques in Indonesia still fall short in meeting accessibility standards for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, persons with disabilities, and individuals with special needs. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS, 2022), there are more than 22 million people with disabilities in the country. This study highlights the importance of applying the Universal Design concept in mosque architecture to create inclusive, safe, and comfortable worship spaces for all. Referring to the seven principles of Universal Design, the study evaluates their implementation in three mosques in Indonesia—Al Mujahidin Mosque in Bandar Lampung, Baitus Shobur Mosque in Tulang Bawang Barat, and Sudalmiyah Rais Mosque in Surakarta. Using a qualitative descriptive method and comparative analysis, this research reveals the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges in realizing mosque designs that are accessible to everyone. The findings aim to serve as a foundation for developing more inclusive mosques in the future. Keywords: Mosque, Universal Design, accessibility, inclusive architecture, disability.

Abstract

Accessibility for the elderly in public spaces, especially mosques, is very important to create an inclusive and safe environment. The Grand Mosque of Bandung, as one of the main mosques in the city center with very diverse visitors, is an important study to examine the extent to which its architectural design supports the comfort and convenience of the elderly in worship. This mosque also functions as a center for social and cultural activities that are often visited by the elderly as an active community. With the increasing number of elderly people and the need for accessible spaces, this study is important to assess the suitability of the mosque design with accessibility standards. This study uses observations and interviews of the elderly as well as evaluation of architectural elements based on PUPR Ministerial Regulation No. 14/2017 and PP No. 16/2021, focusing on the dimensions of the stairs, the width of the access path, the slope of the ramp, and supporting facilities such as toilets and ablution. The results show that several aspects such as uneven stairs, limited ramps, and less than optimal facilities do not meet accessibility standards. These findings emphasize the need for design improvements to create a more inclusive and comfortable mosque for the elderly, as well as being a recommendation for mosque managers and designers.

Abstract

Quonset Hut is a semi-permanent prefabricated building with a light steel structure and a curved corrugated roof, designed by the United States military during World War II as a barracks and storage warehouse. Although initially temporary, this building still survives in various countries, including Indonesia. In Balikpapan, Quonset Hut is known as "Rumah Lengkung" and has been designated as a cultural heritage building, although now only 7 out of 8 units remain due to minimal attention to its historical and architectural value. This study aims to document the typology of Quonset Hut facade elements in Balikpapan with a qualitative descriptive approach using Moneo's typology theory (1978). Data were obtained through interviews, field observations, and literature and document studies. The results of the study indicate that the typology of the facade can be categorized based on the type of building and its constituent elements. Based on the type of building, there are three main types, namely Redesain 24 'x 36' Hut (1941), U.S. Navy Steel Arch Rib Hut 20' x 56' (1944), and U.S. Navy Steel Arch Rib Hut 40' x 100' (1944). Meanwhile, based on the facade elements, 10 types of doors, 12 types of windows, 4 types of front walls, 4 types of side walls, 2 types of roofs, and sun shading elements consisting of 2 types of overhangs, 6 types of canopies, and 1 type of double façade were found. These findings reveal the diversity of forms, materials, and orientations, but still maintain the distinctive character of the Quonset Hut as an iconic historical heritage building.
