Abstract

Despite the flow of FDI in Nigeria, there is still high rate of unemployment, leading to greater level of insecurity, banditry, kidnapping etc. Until adequate economic investments are actualized, it will be difficult to achieve and measure both human and material resources. The study investigated the relationship between foreign direct investment and economic growth in Nigeria using ex-post-facto research design. The time series data used covered the time period 1990-2022. The data were obtained from the Annual Statistical Bulletin of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The population for this study consists of the national economic data that is pertinent to this research. However, this limitation applies specifically to foreign direct investment, which includes both oil and non-oil foreign direct investment, as well as economic growth measured by real gross domestic product (RGDP). In line with the positivist investigation ethic and quantitative design, this study use parametric statistics as the technique for inferential analysis. This technique involves the utilisation of quantitative models to determine the connection between two variables. It uses sample-based parameters as metrics to make inferences about the population being studied. The analysis was conducted with linear regression. The analysis confirmed a substantial correlation between characteristics related to foreign direct investment and economic growth. Consequently, the study demonstrated a substantial and favourable correlation between variables related to foreign direct investment and economic growth. Hence, the study recommends that policymakers should formulate policies that both encourage foreign investment and safeguard and enhance domestic production and investment. These policies should align with the development objectives of the host countries. The Nigerian government should prioritise substantial investments in non-oil sectors like agriculture and mining to generate a multiplier effect and boost the productive capacity of non-oil exports. This will contribute to the long-term economic growth and sustainability of Nigeria.

Abstract

The work examined equities market operations and capital market performance in Nigeria. It covered the periods 1990 to 2021. Equities market operations were captured by equities market capitalization (ecap), number of listed equities (nole), number of traded equities (note) and value of traded equities (vote). The performance of the capital market on the other hand was encapsulated using market capitalization of the entire market. Data on these variables were obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) statistical bulletins. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration analysis technique aided by the e-views software was used to analyze the data. The result of the study revealed the existence of long-run relationship between equities market operations and performance of the capital market. This led to the conclusion that equities market operations influences capital market performance in Nigeria. Therefore, it was recommended that there is need for increased awareness on the activities of the equities market in Nigeria, promotion of market transparency, confidence in the system and regulatory stability for improved efficiency and effectiveness.

Abstract

The present study is concerned with the analysis of profane words uttered by characters in comedy movies starred by Kevin Hart. The research aims at identifying the semantic shifts of SWs in the Arabic subtitles of the selected movies and the possible causes of these shifts. In addition, it is devoted to diagnosing the changes in the pragmatic functions of SWs in the subtitles in comparison with those in the movies, specifying the translation strategies used by amateur subtitlers when subtitling SWs in the selected corpus into Arabic. The difficulty that the study tries to find a solution to is that subtitlers tend to omit swearwords or tone them down with less interest of the contextual meaning of the words. Although there are many studies conducted on swearing in the subtitles, there are not so many studies concerned with the semantic shifts between the source and the target text. It is hypothesized that in subtitling comedy movies, literal translation is mainly avoided to bridge the cultural differences between both speech communities since it involves introducing harsh and offensive subtitled swearwords. Besides, target language receivers may consider some words offensive which are not so in the movies due to cultural differences. In subtitling swearwords in comedy movies, it has been evidenced that subtitlers are mainly concerned with conveying the messages behind the words uttered by characters as far as possible. And at the same time, offensive words are typically subtitled non-literally owing to the fact that literal translation sometimes conveys harsh and socially undigested expressions. A lot of subtitled swearwords were regarded by TL receivers as non-profane words and expressions. The reverse happens in that TL readers watching the subtitled comedy movies consider some words as being socially rejected while they are not so in the original spoken text. This is attributed to cultural differences between the two languages.

Abstract

The study investigated oil tax revenue and infrastructural development in Nigeria. Specifically, the study investigated the relationship between oil tax revenue and road construction, education facilities and healthcare facilities in Nigeria. The study adopted ex-post-factor research design. The population of this study was the entire Nigerian economy where the properties of data used for this research were extracted covering 1981 to 2022. A sample is a part or unit of the population. Using judgmental sampling technique, a sample of 42years’ period from 1981 to 2022 was used. Time series secondary data obtained basically from the CBN bulletin for a period of 42years (1981 to 2022) were used. Simple linear regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis on the strength of relationship between the predictor and criterion variables (Road construction, healthcare facilities, and education facilities). Co-integration test was used to determine the long-run effect of the predictor on the criterion variables (Road construction, health facilities, and education facilities). The study further suggested that Policymakers should implement transparent mechanisms to ensure efficient allocation and utilization of oil tax revenue for infrastructure projects, with regular monitoring and evaluation to track progress. Policymakers should also focus on diversifying revenue sources beyond oil taxes to reduce dependency on oil-related fluctuations and ensure a stable funding base for infrastructure development.
