Abstract

Indonesia’s agricultural sector is increasingly exposed to climate change, as shifts in rainfall, temperature, and humidity disrupt crop yields and farmer livelihoods. These disruptions weaken domestic supply and heighten reliance on external sources. To capture regional differences, this study examines East Java, Central Java, Bali, and North Sumatra, using a Power BI-based interactive dashboard to integrate climate indicators, production data, commodity prices, and consumption patterns from 2018 to 2021. The results highlight distinct provincial dynamics. In Bali, yields respond positively to humidity but decline with rainfall, while Central Java’s rice production is strongly shaped by rainfall variability. East Java’s horticultural crops are highly sensitive to humidity and temperature, and North Sumatra’s diversified systems show inverse effects from all three climate variables. Correlation analyses suggest that higher harvest yields slightly reduce commodity prices, particularly for rice, shallots, and garlic; the coefficients remain weak (–0.1 to –0.4), reflecting the role of transportation, market access, and trade pressures. By visualizing these relationships, the dashboard underscores interconnected vulnerabilities such as dependence on staple crops, reliance on imports, and affordability challenges. It also provides policymakers with a practical tool to monitor climate-related risks and price instability. Overall, the findings emphasize the need for integrated food security policies that combine climate science, crop management, and economic equity to support sustainable outcomes across Indonesia.

Abstract

In this study, the Geographic Information System (GIS) is used to assess the risk of multiple hazards in eight rural villages of Kecamatan Licin, Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia. The study looks at six natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, forest fires, droughts, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. It maps and classifies the level of risk using Digital Elevation Models (DEM), soil amplification factors, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and Kawasan Rawan Bencana (KRB) zonation. Weighted overlay and fuzzy logic were used to calculate the risk level of each village (low, medium, or high) with the standardized hazard factors. The results demonstrate that the risks are in very different locations. Tamansari and Kluncing villages are highly prone to multiple hazards, for instance, due to their proximity to volcanic zones, steep slopes, and floodplains. On the other hand, villages of Licin and Pakel have high risks from volcanic lahar and landslide. Villages that are close to the ground, like Banjar and Gumuk are more susceptible to flooding, while places that do not hold on to rain are more susceptible to drought. The study illustrates how risks can intersect. For example, 32% of the Tamansari area is at high risk for flooding, landslides, and volcanoes at the same time. The GIS-based framework provides useful information for selecting the best disaster prevention plans by encouraging tailored actions based on the peculiar risk profiles of each town. The results show the significance of spatial analysis to develop more disaster-resilient rural areas. This is in conformity with the Sustainable Development Goals for disaster risk reduction.

Abstract

Natural ventilation is widely applied in tropical residential buildings to improve indoor environmental quality and reduce cooling energy demand. However, increasing opening size does not always proportionally enhance ventilation performance. This study aims to experimentally determine the relationship between inlet opening variation and natural ventilation performance in a residential test room (6.0 m × 2.5 m × 3.5 m; 52.5 m³) oriented along the Southwest–Northeast axis. The investigation was conducted by measuring variations in indoor air velocity, temperature, relative humidity, and estimating the air change rate (ACH) under different inlet opening conditions. The inlet door opening was varied from 20% to 100%, while the outlet door remained fully open. Results indicate a non-linear relationship between opening variation and ventilation performance. Indoor air velocity increased from 0.09 m s⁻¹ at 20% opening to a maximum of 0.11 m s⁻¹ at 60%, then decreased at larger openings. ACH followed a similar trend, peaking at the intermediate configuration. Temperature differences remained minimal, confirming the dominance of wind-driven airflow, while relative humidity varied with airflow distribution and dilution effects. The findings suggest that moderate inlet openings may provide more efficient ventilation than fully open configurations in tropical residential buildings.

Abstract

Well service operations in the oil and gas industry utilize sweep fluids based on xanthan gum (XCD), which generate high-viscosity waste with the potential to cause environmental pollution. Due to its natural polymer characteristics, XCD waste has significant potential to be utilized as a raw material for biodegradable bioplastic production. This study aims to synthesize and characterize biodegradable bioplastics derived from XCD waste generated from Hi-Vis sweep operations during well service activities in Bunyu Field. The bioplastics were prepared using the solution casting method with variations in XCD concentration (1.0–2.0%), plasticizer type (glycerol and sorbitol), and plasticizer concentration (20–40%). The resulting bioplastics were characterized through film thickness, water absorption, and biodegradation rate tests. The experimental data were further analyzed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a Central Composite Design (CCD).The results showed that increasing plasticizer concentration enhanced both water absorption capacity and film flexibility. Bioplastics plasticized with glycerol exhibited a higher biodegradation rate compared to those containing sorbitol. These findings demonstrate that XCD waste from Hi-Vis sweep operations can be effectively valorized as an environmentally friendly raw material for biodegradable bioplastic production.
