Journal of Maobi is a scientific periodical published by the Confucius Institute, at Universitas Sebelas Maret which focuses on the development of Chinese studies. The scope of the publication is in the latest studies and research in the fields of language, linguistic, teaching, education, literature, culture, philology, history, and journalism. Journal articles are the result of studies and research originating from literature studies, field research, and best practice of literation of the Chinese studies. Each article contains the latest information by prioritizing the values of novelty, originality and usefulness. The purpose of publishing is to actively improve the quality and accessibility of scientific knowledge in the fields of language, linguistic, teaching, education, literature, culture, philology, history, and journalism. Journal of Maobi is published twice a year, in May and November. Every article published by Journal of Maobi has gone through a strict review and editorial process and respects the provisions of copyright law, privacy and scientific publication ethics. Abstract

This research is motivated by Mandarin, which is not limited to economics, business, and education but also to the entertainment sector, especially radio broadcasts. The problem formulation in this research is how to use Mandarin in the Happy Sunday program on Radio Cakrawala, the obstacles in using Mandarin, and the solutions. The data collection techniques used in this research were observation, interviews and literature study. The research results show that the use of Mandarin in the Happy Sunday program dominates 75% of the total content of the program, and the remaining 25% is in Indonesian. This can be seen in its use in the opening of the event, the announcer's comments and the event's closing. Several obstacles were encountered, such as using varied language, language that attracted listeners, and the broadcaster's limited Mandarin vocabulary.

Abstract

Classroom questioning and assessment are important components of classroom interaction and are also crucial in Chinese language teaching. However, in actual classroom teaching, most Chinese language teachers fail to understand the importance of student questioning and assessment. As a result, classroom teaching fails to achieve good results, to some extent diminishing students' interest in learning Chinese. This paper takes 96 students from the second grade of CHRISTIAN MARANATHA High School, divided into 24 students from class XI MIA, 36 students from class XI IIS 1, and 36 students from class XI IIS 2, as research subjects to investigate the current situation of classroom question and answer evaluation in high school and to propose relevant teaching strategies for classroom question and answer evaluation. This study mainly uses classroom observation, questionnaire survey, and interviews to analyze the current situation and strategies of classroom questioning and assessment. The survey results show that the current situation of classroom questioning and assessment for the second-year students at Pontianak MARANATHA High School includes seven aspects, analyzed in terms of the form of questions posed by teachers, the objects of assessment, the subjects of assessment, the timing of assessment, the content of assessment, the effectiveness of assessment, and the methods of assessment. Mainly, it includes: teachers often pose questions that focus on memory; the objects are mostly the teachers themselves, and opportunities for students to be assessed in classroom questioning are not profound; teachers mostly assess individuals; teachers' assessments are mostly direct; teachers pay more attention to the learning process and knowledge skills; questions posed by teachers mostly have a positive impact; and teachers mostly use oral language for classroom questioning assessment. The author hopes that this research will provide guidance and assistance for Chinese language teaching at CHRISTIAN MARANATHA High School. It analyzes the existing problems in classroom question and answer evaluation and proposes relevant teaching strategies based on theoretical guidance and classroom standards. These strategies aim to help teachers better understand the importance of classroom question and answer evaluation, continually enhance their evaluation capabilities, and promote the overall development of students' abilities. Additionally, it can serve as a reference for Chinese language classroom question and answer evaluations in other high schools.

Abstract

This article aims to find out and identify the cultural differences that exist in the two regions, as well as being one of the efforts to preserve regional cultural heritage. The writing of this article uses quantitative methods, namely by collecting data found on the internet and related journals. Cultural acculturation between Javanese and Chinese is a process of mutual interaction and influence between the two cultures. Both cultures have a long history with their characteristics. Artistic elements can merge through cultural contact and create new forms of cultural adaptation. Cultural exchange between Javanese and Chinese occurs in various areas of life, such as language, religion, art, and lifestyle. For example, many absorbing words are used from both languages, the use of traditional Chinese clothing in specific festivals, the adoption of Chinese architectural styles in the construction of houses, and the presence of Chinese cuisine flavours, which are in the taste of Javanese cuisine. The acculturation of Javanese and Chinese cultures provides opportunities for both cultures to explore and share experiences. This creates a rich diversity of unique and rich cultural identities. This acculturation is also an important example of how cultures can evolve through interaction and exchange between different cultural groups.

Abstract

Marriage is a significant life event that concerns the development of lineage in the family and social stability. Around the world, there are many customs related to marriage. From ancient times until today, traditional wedding ceremonies are still considered significant events in a person's life. This happy event marks an important milestone in life; hence, almost all the time, the wedding ceremony is grand and solemn. This study aims to find the similarities between the wedding customs of the Uighur tribe in China and the Javanese people in Indonesia. The author uses a qualitative comparative method, namely comparing references from one source to other sources to get information that matches the author's needs. The result of this research is that the author found out that there are similarities in the traditional wedding processions of the Uyghur and Javanese tribes, including the proposal procession, engagement, sending engagement gifts, wedding ceremonies and going to the groom's house. The length of time for the traditional Uyghur and Javanese weddings is the same, which is two to three days. Then, the differences between traditional Javanese and Uighur weddings lie in wedding attire, religious traditions, music and dance.

Abstract

This research aims to find out about the semiotic elements in the characters in the game Genshin Impact as well as the meaning of the semiotic elements in the characters in the game Genshin Impact which have a relationship with culture in China which can be useful in general. The type of research used is qualitative research with descriptive analysis using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory.  The techniques used to obtain the results of this research are exploring, searching, writing and collecting data. Based on the results of research and discussion, it shows that, firstly, in the game Genshin Impact, every character from Liyue that is described has semiotic elements that represent the appearance of each character, such as signifiers, signifieds, denotative elements and connotative elements. Second, every character in the game Genshin Impact, especially from Liyue, is explained as having meaning in denotative elements, and connotative elements starting from appearance, clothing and the myth behind each character.

Abstract

In the process of learning Chinese, the inadequate tone and intonation are the main reasons for the phenomenon of "Western accent and tone". The author hopes to use the intonation pattern research approach and experimental phonetic research methods adopted in this article to identify the prosodic features of Indonesian non Chinese learners' acquisition of Chinese declarative sentence intonation, as well as the similarities and differences between the performance of various parameters of Indonesian non Chinese learners' declarative intonation and that of native Chinese speakers. This article adopts the research approach of intonation pattern and uses quantitative analysis methods such as fluctuation, pause delay rate, and volume ratio to examine the intonation of Chinese declarative sentences of Indonesian non Chinese learners (NURUL JADID SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL). Conclusion: Non Chinese Indonesian learners have a smaller overall fluctuation in acquiring Chinese declarative sentences compared to native Chinese speakers. There is a significant increase in sound length before the word boundary at the beginning and end of the sentence, and a noticeable decrease in sound intensity and volume at the end of the sentence.

Abstract

Contrastive analysis aimed at comparing two languages that are not cognate but are sought for similarities. Contrastive analysis has two types: pure contrastive analysis and applied contrastive. Pure contrastive analysis is linguistic analysis that compares first and second languages in linguistic typology studies, while applied contrastive analysis is linguistic analysis that compares first and second languages to solve pedagogical problems of language learning. The results of this study come from boria songs that have been modified with the discussion of 不 (bù) and 没 (méi) in the song lyrics already contained the correct use of the words 不 (bù) and 没 (méi). In this study of motion media and songs 不 (bù) and 没 (méi), researchers make interpretations by pouring all movements and songs into stanzas and then the verse will be analyzed.

Abstract

Films and dramas have become one of the most powerful mediums in reflecting and shaping our perspective on various aspects of life and have long been recognized as an effective method in helping to improve students’ learning ability in learning and practicing foreign languages. Through the combination of audio, visual and narration, they not only create authentic communicative situations, but also allow students to learn the culture and social context in which the language is spoken. In Chinese language learning practice, Chinese movies and dramas are able to provide an interesting learning experience, not only as a fun medium but also greatly to improve listening, speaking skills as well as the addition of common vocabulary contained in movies and dramas. In the context of Mandarin Chinese, movies and dramas can be valuable tools in providing an introduction to pronunciation, tone, and intonation and emphasis in speaking. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of using Chinese films and dramas as learning media to improve Chinese speaking among Chinese language learning students at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). The unit of analysis in this study is the students majoring in Mandarin at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), who will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the impact of Chinese movies and dramas on their Mandarin language and speaking skills. The researcher wanted to understand the extent to which this approach can improve students’ speaking skills in Chinese and how students respond to this method. Theoretically, this study contributes to the language learning literature by providing insights into how audiovisual media can be effectively used in the context of foreign language education, specifically Mandarin language. Thus, this study aims to provide valuable insights for the development of more innovative and engaging learning strategies in the context of teaching Chinese in an academic setting.

Abstract

The dynamics of ethnic Chinese life in Indonesia have been a part of historical civilization since ancient times. The involvement of ethnic Chinese is sometimes rarely highlighted by the public, even though there are various roles of ethnic Chinese in the traditions that exist in Indonesia. This research aims to examine the role of ethnic Chinese in Grebeg Sudiro from a historical perspective. This research is based on a literature study with data obtained from various books, journals, and theses to find out the role of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia in the Grebeg Sudiro tradition. The results show this tradition exists in the Central Java region, especially in Surakarta. The ethnic Chinese in this tradition present their cultural heritage and foster a sense of unity and tolerance within the Javanese community. This tradition represents the beauty of diversity and wealth from different backgrounds. It not only shows the role of ethnic Chinese but also shows the symbolism between Javanese and Chinese culture. The awareness of the Javanese community itself can produce a form of diversity in the form of the Grebeg Sudiro tradition.

Abstract

Todays, the number of graduates has rapidly increased; hence, this situation will affect the difficulty of applying jobs and employment of graduates. Therefore, improving employability skills of the graduates will be a seriously concerned issue of many higher education institutions. Due to undergraduates’ perspective on general employability skills, there are specialized differences of disciplines and qualifications of each field. The general employability skills are standard abilities and qualities of Thai undergraduates which are used to consider for employment. Moreover, basic employability abilities skills, professional abilities, non-technical skills and transferable skills are also included for seeking and gaining employment. This article is conducted according to the basic principles of Thailand Qualification Framework (TQF). This paper studies definitions of general employability skills including explore and understand the current situations of employability skills of Thai undergraduates. This article used in-depth interviews which interviewed three relevant groups consisting of lecturers, organizations, and graduates. The factors influencing employability include: social factors, individual factors, family factors, and higher education factors. Therefore, the results of this article can be used to develop the curriculum of higher education institutions, especially, in general employability skill perspective to be more efficient. The recommendations of this article are given for new graduates in Thailand.
