Abstract

Background: Primary dysmenorrhea is a condition of menstrual pain without structural abnormalities that is experienced by some women. One of the influencing factors is stress. Final-year students are potentially at risk of experiencing stress due to academic burdens, such as thesis preparation, which can affect the menstrual cycle and worsen menstrual pain. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between stress levels and primary dysmenorrhea among undergraduate Midwifery students at Sari Mulia University, Banjarmasin. Methods: This study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational approach and a cross-sectional design. A total of 30 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The respondents’ stress levels were measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the degree of dysmenorrhea was assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). The data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results: This study found a significant correlation between stress levels and primary dysmenorrhea (p < 0.05). The Spearman Rank test indicated a significant positive relationship between stress levels and primary dysmenorrhea (r = 0.612; p = 0.001). Higher levels of experienced stress are associated with more severe dysmenorrhea pain. Conclusion: Stress management should be considered as one of the efforts to reduce primary dysmenorrhea.
