Abstract

This paper presents the implementation and outcomes of a community service project aimed at improving Qur’anic literacy among children in the village of Gunung Melayu, Asahan, North Sumatra. The project was initiated in response to the limited access to structured Qur’anic education in the area, particularly among children aged 6 to 12 years. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis involving religious educators, youth participants, and community members. The findings reveal that structured activities such as Qur’an classes, halaqah (study circles), and community service initiatives significantly contribute to the development of moral character, religious discipline, and social responsibility among adolescents. Despite challenges such as limited resources and competition from digital distractions, the mosque remains an effective center for non-formal religious education. The study recommends stronger collaboration between mosques, schools, and local governments to enhance the reach and impact of such programs.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to enhance the English speaking proficiency of youth in Sei Tualang, Labuhanbatu Utara, through the implementation of interactive learning methods. The background of this program lies in the limited exposure and opportunities for rural youth to practice English communicatively, resulting in low confidence, limited vocabulary, and anxiety in speaking. To address this gap, the program designed a four-week interactive learning workshop that utilized student-centered methods such as role-playing, vocabulary games, storytelling, peer discussions, and real-life conversation simulations. The implementation involved both instructional delivery and motivational strategies to create a non-threatening, supportive learning atmosphere. The participants, aged between 13 and 18 years, were actively involved in communicative tasks that gradually increased in complexity. Pre- and post-activity observations and facilitator journals indicated a noticeable improvement in fluency, vocabulary range, pronunciation accuracy, and confidence. Participants demonstrated a higher willingness to communicate in English and showed a growing ability to sustain short conversations on familiar topics. Beyond linguistic outcomes, the program also fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and self-expression among the learners. Despite challenges such as limited access to technological tools and English materials, the creative adaptation of activities to suit the local context ensured the success of the program. This community engagement highlights that interactive and contextualized learning methods can serve as an effective approach to address the language learning needs of youth in under-resourced areas.

Abstract

This study explores the role of mobile library initiatives in promoting a reading culture in remote and underserved areas. Limited access to educational resources, infrastructure, and books has long posed a challenge to literacy development in rural communities. In response, mobile libraries have emerged as a grassroots solution, bringing books and literacy programs directly to isolated populations. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and observations in several remote villages served by mobile libraries. The findings indicate that mobile libraries significantly enhance access to reading materials, improve reading behavior among children and youth, and foster community engagement in literacy activities. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of local participation and identifies key challenges, such as sustainability, funding, and logistical constraints. Despite these obstacles, mobile library initiatives demonstrate a positive impact on educational equity and literacy development. The study concludes that with adequate support and strategic collaboration, mobile libraries have the potential to become sustainable instruments for empowering marginalized communities through reading.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in raising environmental awareness among school students. Amid growing global environmental challenges, schools have a critical responsibility to equip young learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for sustainable living. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observations, and document analysis across five schools committed to sustainability education. Findings reveal that integrating environmental themes across curricula and promoting extracurricular activities effectively enhance students’ understanding and engagement with environmental issues. Students reported positive behavioral changes, demonstrating increased environmental responsibility both inside and outside school. However, challenges such as limited teacher training, insufficient resources, and competing academic priorities were identified as barriers to effective implementation. The study underscores the need for systemic support, including professional development, resource allocation, and policy integration, to strengthen the impact of ESD in schools. Ultimately, this research highlights the transformative potential of education to foster environmental stewardship and contribute to a sustainable future.

Abstract

Inclusive education remains a significant challenge in rural areas where access to appropriate learning media and professional training is limited. This study aimed to develop contextually relevant and accessible learning media for students with special needs through a collaborative, community-based approach in Rahuning, Asahan. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method and grounded in participatory action research (PAR), the project engaged elementary school teachers, parents, local education officers, and university lecturers in co-designing and implementing inclusive learning tools. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observations, and document analysis. The results demonstrated that active stakeholder involvement led to the creation of practical, low-cost, and engaging learning materials tailored to various disabilities. Furthermore, the process fostered increased awareness, empathy, and a sense of ownership among participants, leading to a shift toward more inclusive practices in the classroom. The study concludes that inclusive education can be significantly improved in under-resourced settings when driven by community collaboration and local empowerment. This research contributes a practical model for inclusive media development that is both sustainable and scalable in similar educational contexts.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve English language skills among village youths in Pantai Labu, Deliserdang, through the implementation of fun and interactive learning activities. Recognizing the limited access to formal English instruction in rural areas, the program focused on fostering a positive, engaging, and learner-friendly environment that emphasized communication over memorization. A thematic curriculum was developed, incorporating games, songs, role-plays, group projects, and creative tasks designed to introduce basic vocabulary and conversational skills. Student motivation is a fundamental aspect of academic success, especially in higher education environments where learners often face a range of personal and academic challenges. This study explores the implementation of a community-based educational counseling program designed to enhance students’ learning motivation at STIT Al-Ittihadiyah Labuhanbatu Utara. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study involved 60 undergraduate students who participated in an eight-week series of counseling sessions focused on motivational strategies, goal setting, and peer support. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-intervention questionnaires based on the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), while qualitative insights were gathered via focus group discussions. The results showed significant improvements in intrinsic motivation, task value, and self-efficacy, alongside a reduction in test anxiety. Students also reported a greater sense of belonging, emotional resilience, and academic purpose. The findings suggest that community-based counseling is an effective and culturally responsive approach to fostering student motivation and can be a valuable model for institutions in similar educational contexts.
