Abstract

This article describes pictures series modified using digital text through Hot Potatoes. Classroom action research is used to discover the process of improving text reading comprehension by modifying serial images using digital text. The classroom action research used consisted of two cycles. The instrument used in this study was a written test in the form of an essay using the hot potatoes application, observation sheets and questionnaires with the help of Google forms and conversations with the help of voice messages on the WhatsApp application. The findings in this article are that in the new normal era, students are faced with new habits of learning with the help of the internet with various applications. Therefore, there is a new climate that emerges in the learning process itself, from refusing to be comfortable with online learning habits. Educators must be more creative in creating learning activities in this network, so as to improve students' learning abilities, especially reading skills.

Abstract

Students made errors in writing narrative text. Two reasons why students made errors because less in grammar mastery and confuses to differenciate of the verb. This writing is to find out the grammatical errors. The method of research is descriptive quantitative. Process of data are analyzed by reading students’ writing firstly, identification, classification, tabulating, describing, and taking conclusion about the errors. After analyzing the data, it found that students made errors in omission, addition, misformation, and misordering categories. The highest frequency of item error  was in using verb tense with total of 61 errors. Meanwhile, the lowest frequency of item errors were in using adverb and adjective with total of 6 errors. Total of the errors was 204.

Abstract

This research tried to find out the realization of repetition as one of component of taxonomic relation in the Al-Quran. Then, it was analyzed by using logogenesis partern to find out the text density. This study had been conducted by using qualitative research. The data consist of clauses of Taxonomic Relation that limited to repetition type. The source of the data was taken from surah Al Baqarah in English Quran Translation by Yusuf Ali. The result of study showed the realization of taxonomic relation were realized in logogenetic pattern. From ten most frequent lexicals of repetition, it had found that in surah Al Baqarah, medium is the most dominant. It happened because there were some clausea that contain about certain lexical has function to track the discussion in the previous clause as the warning, command and prohibition. Therefore it was concluded that repetition that realized in Surah Al Baqarah make the text in the level moderate until easy to be understood by reader because the frequency of repetition is dense.

Abstract

This research focused on simile analysis and meaning on Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets novel. Simile is a figurative language that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things. Qualitative research is used in conducting this research. The result of the research has found 55 sentences of Simile on Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets from chapter one up to chapter nine. The author used Simile to describe emotion of characters, to explain circumstances and to raise the interesting impression in the novel.

Abstract

This study aims to explain (1) the teacher’s challenges using the application in online teaching classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) the strategies used by teachers in teaching using the application. The participants of the research were the English teachers at SMA/SMK/MA in Yogyakarta, Gunungkidul, Magelang, and Kebumen. A qualitative method was employed in this research and using interviews via WhatsApp as a data collection technique. The findings showed that teachers had the challenges such as (1) operating the application during online learning, (2) developing the material, assessment, and evaluation in teaching, (3) developing the teaching method, (4) combining the material and application, and (5) motivating the students and parents. The strategies used by the teacher when using the application in teaching such as (1) watching the video tutorial, (2) choosing a  suitable application for teaching, (3) arranging the new learning schedule, (4) developing the creativity in designing the material, and (5) giving the simple material and task for the students.

Abstract

The aims of the research to describe about students’ ability, difficulties, and the efforts of a teacher in mastery reading of recount text. There were many problems in reading recount text such as the students lack of vocabulary, cannot understand the meaning of the text, lack of motivation, and less of facilities. The research was conducted by mixed research. The researcher used the test and interview to collect the data. After doing the research, it can be concluded that the ability of the grade VIII students of MTsN 3 Tapanuli Selatan in mastering reading recount text based on the test has done, was categorized into “very good” category. The mean score of good category was 85,33. After interviewing the students, the researcher concluded that the students’ problems in mastering reading recount text was in vocabulary mastery, low of understanding the grammar and the generic structure of recount text. While, the efforts have done by the English teacher was keep the students learn, review, and explain detailed about the difficulties that the students got.

Abstract

This research focused on the students’ ability in writing procedure text at grade XI MAS NU Sibuhuan. Based on first observation, the students are difficult to create text because they have lack of vocabulary and confidence in expressing idea into written form. The researcher applied mixed method by giving essay test and interview to evaluate the students’ writing in procedure text and identifying students’ difficulties. Students’ of XI MIA 2 that consisted of 33 were as sample. The indicators of test divided into content, organization, syntax, vocabulary and mechanics. The result of this research has found that students’ ability in writing procedure text lied on mean 57.56 score. It means that students’ writing procedure text ability categorize into poor category. Moreover, the students’ difficulties are vocabulary mastery and syntax.

Abstract

This study is to explore the students’ motivation in learning English. The kind of the research is quantitative research. The writer presented 40 items of questionnaire. Population of this research were the students at the sixth semester of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan (112) and the samples were 28 respondents that is taken by simple random sampling technique. The research is done by online. The data were taken by Google-Form or questionnaires trough Whats-App Group. Based on calculating the data, it was found that the highest scores was 172 and the lowest score was 122 . The mean score was  147, the median score was 149.7857 and the mode was 153.9. Students who has high motivation were 14.2% and medium were 64.2% and the students’ motivation who has low motivation were 21.4%. It concludes that the students’ motivation in learning English were medium category.
