Abstract

To complement MBKM (Freedom Campus-Freedom to Learn) featuring threesemester off-campus internship program, we are keen to establish Bali International School of Arts (BISA) for international students coming to Bali. i While MBKM policy renewing educational system by realizing on multiple partnership, BISA is committed to serve as the epicenter of the academic artistic collaboration. In doing so BISA provides creative space to welcome international students, artists, scholars, and cultural visitors to network and to develop stronger performance position with exhibition outcomes, ensuring the preservation of cultural expression while encouraging contemporary extensions. Just as MBKM, BISA cherishes partnership based on equal-global-relation in seeking better ways of doing things through industrial partnership and free enterprise. Adopting English as the primary way of communication BISA also opens her doors for enriching students’ knowledge, skills, and preworking experiences beyond its area of specialty, capable of seizing future opportunities through necessary creativity and innovation. To guaranty our service to international students (including visiting artists scholars who may be interested in experiencing fantastic cultural art uniquely Bali) we are cooperating to merge our current Balimodule (https://www.balimodule.com/) with the best art companies in several regions of the island. Adapting such method of co-operation BISA will invest four hallmarks from Badung to Karangasem regency: (1) Contemporary / Environmental Dance directed by Dr. Agung Rahma; (2) Traditional and Contemporary Topeng Mask & Wayang Puppetry directed by Made Sidia; (3) Traditional Dance and Gamelan Music directed by Agung Anom; and (4) Folk Arts and its Ethnology, directed by Dr. Catrini Pratihari. Balimodule as the main trunk should keep on nurturing such four branches, while enjoying better capacity to serve her local and international students.

Abstract

In the midst of the 2020 pandemic, an intriguing writing project landed. It was uncertain how it could be done with all the restrictions, as the project requires involvement of a heritage that needs to be observed directly. Yet gradually it leads to encouraging better understanding of our position as humans in this current situation. The heritage was Ida Bagus Njana’s sculptures. Njana is a well-known sculptor from Mas Village, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. His works have been said to be the start of modern Balinese sculptures, especially his wood works. Very little of his works still exist in Bali, namely in his own family museum Njana Tilem Museum, then Museum Puri Lukisan, Pura Taman Pule temple, and Taman Werdhi Budaya. Existing writings on Njana lie in the existence of Pita Maha, the community or group of painters and sculptures in the 1930s. However, when conversations took place with his family in 2020, Njana’s sculptures were not merely an artwork to be sold, it’s filled with spiritual thinking and expressions. His works with the title “Dewi Pertiwi” (meaning: Goddess of Earth) are filled with surrealism - not only its elegant carved shapes being different from the traditional Balinese methods, but also its mysterious narration about the Goddess itself. It was later observed that these narrations were not that mysterious. It actually came from Njana’s knowledge from scriptures (lontar), which means he really thought through what he was expressing about the Goddess of Earth narratives. These “Dewi Pertiwi” sculptures speak of the environment and earth that we live in and serve as somewhat reminders. This then inspired us to continue the conversation of appreciating and understanding these narrations with our current life. And interestingly landed as a curatorial project “Pertiwi” with the theme resilience in a form of website, where Njana’s Dewi Pertiwi sculptures were part of its starting point.

Abstract

At the beginning of the Netherland-Indies colonial era in Bali, photography became an important medium that introduced Bali to the westerner. Photography in the realm of documentation in Bali began in 1912 by Gregor Krause, a German doctor who was commissioned by the Netherland-Indies colonial government to treat the cholera epidemy outbreak in southern Bali. Gregor Krause for the first-time photographed Bali from the viewpoint of community life, agriculture, religion, women and children, dance, markets, nature, culture and arts. Most of Krause's photographic works totalling more than 4000 frames were published in 1920, the photos in the book then played an important role as a media for promoting exotic Bali in the early tourism era, and inspired many Western photographers, artists, writers and explorers to come to Bali. The activities of the early travellers then published in the tourism promotion media in the form of books, posters, postcards, magazines, brochures and travel guides which published by the colonial government, shipping, airlines, and travel agents in various needs. This article discusses the role of Krause photography and analysis of Gregor Krause's photographic work as a photography pioneer at the beginning of the tourism era in Bali. Abstract

Abstract Color is very essential in life; it is hard to imagine this world without color or only black and white. All colors appear between black and white because they exist due to the effects of light and energy. This article focuses on how to use color as a medium of healing. The color of the Balinese mandala in form of the circle color wheel, each direction has its color, meaning, gods, place in the body, day, and number. The color is related to balance human emotion and healing psychology. Psychology is part of the field of science and applied science about human behavior, mental function, and mental processes. At first, color healing is only considered as a discourse in the development of visual art, but over time, gradually the understanding of using color healing began to develop. Painting becomes a pleasure that is very useful in developing and exploring various layers of life, both physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The main methods of using color as healing are play, flow, and freedom. There are several steps I used to practice using color healing; (1) study the psychological level of feelings of the participant; (2) classify the problem and search for the methods of expression; (3) interpretation and analysis of the artworks produced by participants; and (4) interpreting the colors and interviewing according to the participant's needs. In this case, the aspects of generating internal awareness and high sensitivity within the participant become the main focus. Keywords: painting, color, and healing.

Abstract

This article aims to report practical intercultural experiences in the experimental choreographies’ creation relating characters from the Brazilian Amazonian culture under the structure and movement bases belonging to traditional Balinese mask dance-dramas. From aesthetic rules pertaining to classical dance, after ten years of training with the master I Made Djimat and his family, in Batuan village, there is a need to elaborate choreographic compositions based on characters from the artist’s Amazon mythology who seeks to narrate the roots of its people and culture through Balinese dances learned over a decade of dedication and refinement of its techniques. More than an artistic experience, it is a rediscovery of origins that presupposes the intersection of myths that are similar despite their divergent homelands. The choreographic composition uses Balinese masks, costumes, music and movements that were integrated with native Amazonian cultural elements. The research aims to find out which elements are viable in the crossing of cultures (Bali-Brazil) regarding the development of new creations. Other questions arise from this study, such as: How can one experience interculturality so that none of the cultures lose their roots, thus maintaining their traditional knowledge? The mythical character in development for this study is a bird of prey that, at night, flies over the villagers’ houses announcing ill omen. The next morning, the bird, already transformed into an old witch, goes through the same houses announcing her arrival with a whistle. The residents then, to avoid the old witch’s curses, present her with coffee, tabacco and fish. Such myth is structured basing its composition of movements and choreographies on traditional characters from Balinese culture such as Garuda and Matah Gede, among others.

Abstract

A discussion of figure of speech types and their meanings in the text Brahma Satisfies Lord Siva is presented in this paper. In addition to it, the Balinese cultural values, namely tri hita karana (three causes of happiness) conveyed by the figure of speech is presented as well. It will be useful not only for those who are engaged in text but also for puppeteers who love to use figure of speech in their performances. This topic needs to be researched because the text is a religious text which contains figure of speech with their cultural values. The meanings of the figure of speech cannot be separated from the theme of the text which is in line with the cultural values of the text. The data about the figure of speech is collected through library research and analyzed based on semantic theory and also on cultural elements since cultural elements are needed to reveal the cultural values of the text. In this study, the cultural elements are limited into 3 such as the custom and tradition, religion, and language. Theoretically, this paper will provide an insight of a religious text, specifically in relation with the cultural value contained in it. Practically, this paper can contribute to the world of education so that it will help people to grow their understanding of religious text and Balinese cultural values.

Abstract

The unpopularity of wastra bebali among the Balinese themselves inspired the writer to explore further and in depth about the thoughts of the sulinggih (pedanda) who intensely described Balinese Hindu religious teachings through the visual art in the medium of textile called wastra bebali, as well as what made it not so popular. known even by the people themselves. Case study research and cultural studies approach is used to uncover the causes of the unpopularity of wastra bebali in Balinese society. The results of the study indicate that there is an indication of the exclusivity of the geriya as the upstream of the knowledge and practice of making wastra bebali as the key factors in the unpopularity of wastra bebali, the exclusivity of the geriya occurs as a result of several accumulative factors caused by past experiences. This attitude of exclusivity is like a double-edged sword, an attitude that can protect the existence of wastra bebali while making it slowly extinct. The emergence of figures like a descendant of the Brahmins who consciously began to introduce wastra bebali to the community, needed support from local researchers, so that they could bring this wastra bebali as an exclusive product not only for the geriya but for Balinese society. Keywords: Wastra Bebali, Cultural Exclusivism, Bali
