Abstract

Gestational hypertension is a common pregnancy complication associated with increased risks for maternal and fetal health. Non-pharmacological approaches, including dietary modification, have been explored as potential supportive strategies for blood pressure management. Ambon banana (Musa acuminata) is a potassium rich fruit that may be relevant in this context. This study aimed to examine changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure following Ambon banana consumption among pregnant women with gestational hypertension attending Puskesmas Jalan Emas, Tangerang Regency. A quantitative pre-experimental study using a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted among 31 pregnant women aged 23 to 30 years. Participants consumed two Ambon bananas per day, approximately 200 grams, for seven days. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention period. Descriptive statistics and paired t tests were used to assess changes in blood pressure. Mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 147.2 ± 5.0 mmHg to 127.0 ± 5.2 mmHg, and mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 94.2 ± 4.0 mmHg to 83.4 ± 3.1 mmHg, with both changes reaching statistical significance (systolic p = 0.0001; diastolic p = 0.0005). Given the absence of a control group and the small sample size, these findings should be interpreted as preliminary and do not establish causality. The results indicate an observed association between Ambon banana consumption and short term reductions in blood pressure, warranting further investigation through controlled trials with larger samples and longer follow up to determine clinical relevance and generalizability.

Abstract

The WHO states that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease experienced by people around the world. The result of the 2023 SKI shows that, on average, people aged ≥ 3 years in the last year complained of having dental and oral problems. One of the teachings of Islam regarding health is the Islamic recommendation on dental and oral health, and one of the things recommended by the Prophet Muhammad is to use a miswak. Islamic boarding schools are expected to educate their student in all aspects in accordance with Islamic values and norms, including aspects of dental and oral health. This study aims to analyze the differences in education with the addition of an Islamic approach in the diffusion of innovation in oral health maintenance using siwak. This approach is examined through five characteristics of innovation according to the theory of innovation diffusion, namely relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, triability, and observability. The research method used a quasi-experimental design with two treatment groups: education without the addition of an Islamic approach and education with the addition of an Islamic approach. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and the total number of respondents in this study was 60 students. The result shows that education with the addition of an Islamic approach showed a significant increase in the characteristics of triability and observability, and generally yielded higher scores compared to education without the addition of an Islamic approach. The Islamic approach was proven to be more effective in increasing respondents' decisions to use siwak and had a strong influence on the persuasion stage in the innovation adoption process. The conclusion is that the integration of religious values into health education can strengthen public acceptance and intention toward innovations in dental care based on the Sunnah.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a disease spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a species that reproduces very quickly and infects around 390 million people each year. The objective of this research is to identify risk factors associated with the occurrence of DHF in the village of Sungai Pinang, located in the city of Samarinda. This study employs a quantitative approach and uses an observational method with a case-control design, which allows for the analysis of the relationship between the disease or health condition and specific risk factors. The sample consisted of 74 participants, divided into 37 cases and 37 controls, selected through purposive sampling. Odds ratios were used for data analysis. The results indicated that the presence of a lid on the water container represented a risk factor (OR = 1.135; 95% CI: 0.424–3.039). Similarly, the habit of emptying water containers was shown to be a risk factor (OR = 1.556; 95% CI: 0.617–3.928), as was the type of container material (OR = 1.268; 95% CI: 0.487–3.301) for the incidence of dengue in the village of Sungai Pinang Dalam, Samarinda City. In conclusion, the water container cover, the practice of emptying it, and the container material were identified as factors that influence the occurrence of dengue cases in this area.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern in Asia, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. Comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and HIV/AIDS substantially contribute to the regional TB burden, while multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) continues to challenge TB control efforts. This study aimed to identify key factors associated with the high prevalence of TB in Asia and to highlight the need for integrated prevention and treatment strategies. A quasi-systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA-based screening procedures. Peer-reviewed articles and official health reports published between 2015 and 2024 were systematically searched and assessed. After screening and eligibility evaluation, 15 studies were included in the final analysis. The results revealed consistent patterns indicating that diabetes mellitus significantly increases the risk of TB and worsens treatment outcomes, particularly in countries such as Indonesia, while HIV infection remains a major driver of active TB cases in Thailand and other high-burden settings. MDR-TB emerged as a critical regional threat, primarily associated with delayed diagnosis, limited laboratory capacity, shortages of trained healthcare personnel, and weak surveillance systems. Additionally, socioeconomic inequalities and inadequate healthcare infrastructure were recurrently identified as major barriers to effective TB control. In conclusion, reducing the TB burden in Asia requires a multifaceted and integrated approach addressing medical, social, economic, and health system factors. Strengthening diagnostic capacity, improving data reporting consistency, and enhancing regional collaboration are essential to achieving global TB elimination targets.

Abstract

The phenomenon of increasing numbers of elderly people is a demographic challenge that has a wide impact, especially on their physical, mental, social and economic health. This study aims to trace changes in marital status and its relationship to the incidence of depression in the elderly in Indonesia. This study used secondary longitudinal data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) waves 4 and 5, with elderly respondents aged >60 years who had complete data on marital status, depression, and other covariates. The dependent variable is depression which assessed using the Centers for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D 10). The main independent variable was changes in marital status, accompanied by control variables such as age, gender, place of residence, and religion. Data were analyzed in a wide format using univariate, bivariate (Chi-square and t-test), and binary logistic regression. The findings of this study showed that 9.07% of elderly people experienced depression at the time of the follow-up study. The changes in marital status, age, and place of residence were significantly related to depression, while gender and religion did not show a significant relationship. Elderly who changed their marital status from married to divorced/separated/widowed/widower had a lower risk of depression, higher age decreased the likelihood of depression, while living in rural areas increased the risk. Gender and religion were not significantly associated with the incidence of depression. Interventions such as psychosocial support and mental health-based programs that take into account factors such as changes in marital status, age, and place of residence are needed.

Abstract

Indonesia faces serious challenges in dental and oral health and nutrition, with dental caries, stunting, and obesity remaining major public health problems among children. Schools play a crucial role in shaping children’s health behaviors through structured health education and interventions. The School Health Program model “SEGIGIKU” was developed to enhance the involvement of teachers, peers, and parents in improving oral health behavior and nutrition awareness as preventive measures against dental caries, stunting, and obesity in preschool children. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the “SEGIGIKU” School Health Program model as an effort to improve oral health behavior and nutrition awareness among preschool children. This research employed a research and development (R&D) design, consisting of stages of information gathering, program design, expert validation, product testing, and final product development. The results showed a consistent weekly increase in students’ weight and height. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon test demonstrated a highly significant improvement in dental hygiene, as indicated by the PHPM score (p = 0.000), and a significant reduction in dental caries, as reflected by the decay score (p = 0.002). In conclusion, the “SEGIGIKU” School Health Program model effectively improves oral health behavior and nutrition awareness, which are closely interconnected, and contributes to the prevention of dental caries, stunting, and obesity in preschool children.

Abstract

Persistent challenges in health workforce planning, distribution, and performance management remain prevalent in developing countries, largely due to fragmented and underutilized human resource data systems. Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) have emerged as a strategic tool to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen health workforce governance. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) synthesizes empirical evidence published between 2015 and 2024 on the role of HRIS in enhancing strategic health workforce management in developing countries, with the objectives of identifying key Information System (IS) evaluation models, examining the relationship between system quality and individual performance, exploring the integration of competency planning and Person–Job Fit (P–J Fit), and highlighting critical research gaps. A systematic review of 20 peer-reviewed studies was conducted following the PRISMA protocol, encompassing system design foundations, adoption processes, interoperability challenges, and workforce-related outcomes in healthcare settings. The findings indicate that HRIS functions as a strategic enabler for decentralized management, evidence-based workforce planning, and performance improvement; however, its effectiveness is constrained by persistent interoperability barriers, fragmented data architectures, and the absence of internationally standardized workforce data. In conclusion, maximizing the strategic value of HRIS requires a dual emphasis on data standardization and organizational readiness, while future research should integrate behavioral theories with IS success frameworks, assess long-term HRIS impacts, and foster international collaboration to establish unified health workforce data standards that support policy coherence and digital health transformation in the public sector.
