Abstract

The loss of mother tongue among youth has become a pressing issue worldwide, particularly in linguistically diverse nations. This phenomenon threatens not only the survival of native languages but also the preservation of cultural heritage and national identity. This article examines the causes and implications of mother tongue decline among young generations through a comprehensive literature review and theoretical analysis. Factors such as globalization, educational policies, urbanization, and negative language attitudes are identified as key drivers of this trend. The study highlights the profound cultural and social consequences of mother tongue loss, including cultural erosion and weakened national unity. Recommendations are provided to promote mother tongue preservation through education, community engagement, positive language attitudes, technology, and supportive language policies. Preserving mother tongues is essential for sustaining cultural diversity and strengthening national identity in an increasingly globalized world.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has had a significant impact across various sectors, including education. One of the technologies that has been increasingly utilized is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which offers tremendous potential for enhancing students' character and soft skills. Although AI is widely used to support the development of technical skills, research on its application for enhancing students' soft skills remains limited. This article aims to explore the use of AI in improving students' character and soft skills in the digital age. The study employs a literature review approach, gathering and analyzing various relevant sources on AI and character education. Data were collected through a literature search of academic articles published between 2020 and 2025. The analysis was conducted by assessing the types of AI technologies utilized, the learning models integrated, and the impacts and challenges of implementing these technologies in education. The main findings indicate that technologies such as chatbots and AI-based adaptive learning systems have the potential to enhance students' communication, leadership, and empathy skills. However, challenges related to technology access and the objective measurement of character remain significant barriers. This research contributes to the development of technology-based education by offering insights into how AI can be applied to support the development of students' soft skills. In conclusion, while AI demonstrates great potential, further research is needed to address implementation challenges and to develop more effective AI-based evaluation tools.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine differences in male and female courtesy strategies in oral communication within the Gorontalo language community. This study uses qualitative approaches through extensive literature research and analyzes a variety of recent academic sources from sociolinguistics, practical application and linguistic anthropology. The analysis shows that women tend to use more indirect, more expressive and respectful language forms when communicating in general. In contrast, men with high probability are direct and assertive strategies in their speech. These differences are not only language decisions, but also reflect the underlying social structure and gender roles that exist in Gorontalo culture. Therefore, course strategies play an important role in maintaining social harmony and expressions of cultural identity related to all genders. By highlighting these distinctions, this study provides valuable insight into the functioning of language as a medium to reinforce social norms and gender expectations in a particular cultural context. Furthermore, research on the broader domain of gender-specific language studies is contributed by focusing on local Indonesian languages, which were often underrepresented in such discussions. Ultimately, this study enriches our understanding of how culturally embedded linguistic practices shape communication patterns and social relationships in Gorontalo society.

Abstract

Language is a powerful tool that not only facilitates communication but also reflects and reinforces social structures, including gender roles. While numerous studies have investigated gendered language, there remains a gap in understanding how everyday language subtly maintains gender hierarchies. This study aims to examine the use of gendered language in daily interactions from a sociolinguistic perspective. Utilizing a library research method, the study analyzes data from academic journals, textbooks, and reports using qualitative analysis to identify key themes in gendered language use. The findings reveal five major themes: gender differences in communication styles, power inequality in verbal interaction, language use reflecting stereotypes, awareness of inclusive language, and critiques of the binary approach. These findings highlight the dynamic role of language in shaping and maintaining gender ideologies. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the importance of inclusive and non-binary language practices in promoting gender equality across social contexts.

Abstract

Language is a dynamic entity that continuously adapts to societal changes, especially in the 21st century with the rise of digital communication platforms like social media, instant messaging, and online communities. This digital environment, coupled with globalization and technological advancements, has fostered the evolution of new language patterns, vocabularies, and communication norms. Digital media not only alters how language is used but also redefines what constitutes language itself, contributing to the democratization of language where individuals from diverse backgrounds influence its development. This research aims to analyze the socio-cultural and linguistic impact of digital technologies and global networks on language evolution by examining real-life language use across digital platforms. Employing a qualitative approach with a library research method, data was collected through a literature review of academic sources such as books, scientific journals, articles, and publications discussing language change in the digital era. The analysis involved reviewing and comparing theories and findings from previous research to identify common patterns in language evolution. Key findings indicate five main themes: lexical innovation, code-switching, grammar simplification, the increased use of emojis and GIFs, and the emergence of globalized vernaculars. These changes align with technolinguistics, where technology actively shapes language, and Darwinian adaptation theory, where language evolves in response to social and communication demands, prioritizing efficiency and relevance.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of the Approbation Maxim in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice through a pragmatic lens, focusing on how compliments function within character interactions. Drawing on Leech’s (1983) Politeness Principle, particularly the maxim of Approbation, the research explores praise as a linguistic strategy for managing face, expressing transformation, and navigating social hierarchies. Using a qualitative descriptive method and discourse analysis, 27 utterances were identified and categorized by topic—appearance, ability, and personality. The findings reveal that praise in the novel is shaped by gender roles, social class, and interpersonal motives, functioning not merely as politeness but also as a tool for emotional and relational negotiation. Characters such as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet exhibit varying degrees of sincerity and strategic politeness, reflecting broader cultural values embedded in 19th-century English society. The study affirms the relevance of pragmatic theory in literary analysis and offers insights for further interdisciplinary exploration.

Abstract

In the film Dilan 1990 through a pragmatic approach based on the theory of speech acts proposed by John Searle. Illocutionary speech acts play an important role in interpersonal communication because they reflect the speaker’s intentions and communication strategies in interacting with the interlocutor. As part of the study of pragmatics, illocutionary speech acts include various forms of speech, such as commands, requests, suggestions, promises, and expressions of feelings conveyed in certain contexts. Films as a representation of life present communication dynamics that are rich in meaning, where the characters’ speaking styles not only function as communication tools, but also reflect identity and social relations. The character Dilan in this film is known to have a unique way of communicating full of subtle allusions, humor, and implied meanings that reflect his attitude and communicative strategies in establishing relationships with Milea and other characters. Thus, this study aims to identify and classify the illocutionary speech acts used by Dilan, as well as to understand how his language choices contribute to shaping the dynamics of interaction and characterization in the film. The main data in this study are Dilan’s dialogue transcripts, which are analyzed based on Searle’s speech act categories, namely assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The results of the study show that directive and assertive are the speech acts most often used by Dilan, with speech forms dominated by invitations, mild sarcasm, and statements of belief packaged with humor. In addition, commissives often appear in the form of promises or commitments to Milea, which shows the intensity of the relationship between the two characters. Expressives function to convey emotions indirectly, while declaratives play a greater role in shaping Dilan’s social identity in his social environment. The diversity of these speech acts reflects the typical communication patterns of adolescents, where language is not only used as a means of self-expression, but also as a tool to build social relationships and create a certain impression in front of the interlocutor.

Abstract

Hate speech on social media necessitates forensic linguistic analysis to decode its legal and societal implications. This study addresses the gap in research on gender-targeted cyber violence against high-profile women, employing descriptive qualitative methods to analyze 26 hate-speech samples directed at Jada Smith from Twitter (2022–2024). Using Canadian legal frameworks (Sections 319, 372 Criminal Code; Human Rights Act), data were categorized via pragmatic, semantic, and syntactic analysis. Findings reveal five hate-speech typologies: defamatory libel (35%, n=9), false messages/harassing communications (27%, n=7), willful promotion of hatred (15%, n=4), public provocation of violence (12%, n=3), and stereotyping (12%, n=3). Dominant tactics include dehumanizing metaphors ("gutter," "road kill"), violent directives ("kill yourself"), and gendered slurs ("bitch"). The study concludes that language weaponization severely damages reputations, with Twitter’s lax moderation exacerbating harm. Forensic linguistics proves vital for legal evidence and platform policy reform.
