Abstract

Intertextuality is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of academic writing that enables students to construct well-supported and persuasive arguments. This article explores how teaching intertextuality enhances students' ability to integrate sources effectively, establish connections between ideas, and develop a strong academic voice. By examining various forms of intertextual references—such as direct quotations, paraphrases, summaries, and implicit allusions—this study highlights strategies to improve coherence and argumentation in student writing. Furthermore, it discusses how a deeper understanding of intertextuality can help students avoid unintentional plagiarism while strengthening their critical thinking skills. The article also presents pedagogical approaches, including scaffolded exercises and reflective writing, to help students engage with texts more meaningfully. By fostering an awareness of intertextuality, educators can empower students to participate more confidently in academic discourse, constructing arguments that are both original and well-grounded in existing literature.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental aspect of language learning that significantly influences students’ communication skills and academic performance. However, traditional vocabulary teaching methods often emphasize rote memorization and word lists, neglecting less commonly explored strategies that can enhance vocabulary growth more effectively. This study examines the impact of integrating rarely discussed aspects of vocabulary development, such as lexical chunks, morphological awareness, etymology, and contextual learning, on second-grade senior high school students. The research employs a qualitative and quantitative approach, incorporating classroom observations, student assessments, and teacher feedback to analyze the effectiveness of these strategies. Findings indicate that students exposed to these methods show a deeper understanding of word formation, improved retention, and greater confidence in using new vocabulary in different contexts. Additionally, engaging students in interactive learning activities, such as word mapping, etymological exploration, and phrase-based instruction, fosters a more meaningful and long-term vocabulary acquisition process. By shifting the focus from isolated word memorization to a more holistic and contextualized approach, this study provides valuable insights for educators aiming to enhance students' vocabulary proficiency. The findings suggest that incorporating innovative vocabulary learning strategies into English language teaching can create a more dynamic and effective learning environment for senior high school students.

Abstract

Abstract

Sustainable tourism has gained significant attention as an approach to balancing environmental conservation, economic growth, and cultural preservation. However, eco-tourism practitioners often face challenges in effectively communicating with international tourists due to limited English proficiency tailored to their specific needs. This study aims to analyze the English language needs of eco-tourism practitioners and develop an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) syllabus that aligns with the requirements of sustainable tourism. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and field observations involving eco-tour guides, local community members, and tourism stakeholders. The findings indicate that eco-tourism practitioners require English proficiency in key areas such as environmental interpretation, cultural storytelling, customer service, and crisis communication. Furthermore, the study highlights the gap between existing general English training and the practical linguistic demands of eco-tourism. Based on the needs analysis, a tailored ESP framework is proposed, incorporating communicative tasks, contextual vocabulary, and interactive learning strategies. The study underscores the importance of designing language programs that not only enhance professional communication skills but also promote sustainability awareness. The findings contribute to ESP curriculum development and offer insights for policymakers and educators in integrating sustainable tourism into language training programs.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in English instruction for students majoring in Physical Education. The primary objective is to enhance students’ ability to use technical sports terminology, deliver clear instructions, and build speaking confidence in professional contexts. A quasi-experimental design involving 30 participants was employed, comprising a pre-test, TBLT-based instructional intervention, and a post-test to measure fluency, accuracy, and comprehension improvements. Both quantitative data (test scores) and qualitative data (observed student performance) were analyzed. The results indicate significant improvement in students’ ability to communicate training-related instructions effectively. Nevertheless, challenges such as limited vocabulary and issues with sentence structure were observed. The study recommends incorporating structured feedback, supplementary learning materials, and a specialized sports glossary to address these. Overall, TBLT proves to be an effective approach for integrating English language development into sports education. Future studies may consider applying this model to other sports-related disciplines.

Abstract

Criminal acts such as assault or rape are things that cannot be tolerated. This research uses qualitative data with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation, attention, and notes. As for the analysis method, the approach is based on the Critical Discourse Analysis model of Teun A. Van Dijk. Based on the discourse analysis of the news discourse of Spanish celebrities raped by 7 people in India, 4 suspects were arrested published by CNN Indonesia media, it can be concluded that the news preparation structure has a conceptual framework following Teun A. Van Dijk's theory which includes macro structure, superstructure and micro structure. Microstructure is a dimension of AWK that has the most detailed discussion. The microstructure consists of semantics, which consists of 6 data, syntax has 8 data, and rhetoric consists of 2 data. The level of a person's understanding in conducting discourse analysis on a news discourse can influence the perception to respond to the contents of the news.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and digital transformation, mastering foreign languages, especially English, has become an essential skill in various aspects of life. This ability not only plays a role in cross-cultural communication, but also determines individual success in education, work, and global social interactions. English is now not just a subject, but a key tool in accessing information, building international relations, and participating in the global economy. However, behind the importance of mastering English, significant psychological challenges arise, namely social anxiety. Social anxiety is defined as excessive fear or nervousness in social situations, especially when speaking in front of other people. In the context of foreign language learning, social anxiety can manifest in the form of fear of making mistakes, fear of being evaluated, and worry about negative judgments from others. Recent studies show that individuals who have high levels of social anxiety tend to experience difficulties in speaking skills, even when they have a good command of grammar or vocabulary. This study aims to explore the relationship between social anxiety and English language skills among college students, specifically focusing on the correlation between anxiety and self-confidence in speaking a foreign language. Utilizing a quantitative survey design with 6 respondents from Gorontalo State University, the research collected data via online questionnaires and analyzed it using descriptive and Pearson correlation analysis. The main findings indicate a significant negative correlation (r = -0.56) between anxiety and self-confidence, suggesting that higher anxiety levels are associated with lower self-confidence in speaking English. This highlights the importance of addressing psychological factors, such as social anxiety, in English language education at the university level to foster more effective and holistic language learning strategies
