Abstract

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a prevalent yet underrecognized neurodevelopmental condition that affects children's expressive and receptive language skills. This study explores pragmatic communication difficulties in children with DLD using a clinical-pragmatic framework to inform assessment and intervention. A qualitative case study was conducted with three children aged 6 to 8 years diagnosed with DLD. Data were gathered through naturalistic observations, semi-structured interviews with caregivers and therapists, and video recordings of classroom and playtime interactions. Analysis followed Cummings’ clinical pragmatics model, focusing on speech acts, turn-taking, topic coherence, contextual relevance, and responses to indirect communication. Findings indicate a dominance of directive speech acts, reduced narrative coherence, delayed turn-taking, and limited understanding of indirect speech. Children frequently relied on nonverbal cues such as gestures and prosody to support meaning. The study highlights the need for multimodal interventions that integrate structural language development with pragmatic training. These findings offer implications for clinicians, educators, and researchers in designing ecologically valid, socially responsive interventions for children with DLD.

Abstract

This study explores how gender identity is encoded through word formation in culinary naming, focusing on dessert names from Season 14 of MasterChef Australia. Employing a socio-onomastic and corpus-based mixed-method approach, the study analyzes linguistic patterns in the naming of desserts by male and female contestants across 51 episodes. Results indicate that nouns were the most dominant word class, with compounding, borrowing, multiple processes, and nonce formations being the main word formation techniques. Male contestants predominantly favored compounding with emotional or narrative elements, while female contestants employed more complex, ingredient-based structures using multiple processes. These linguistic strategies not only reflect individual creativity but also reveal patterns shaped by gender norms. This study contributes to discussions on language, identity, and culinary culture, offering insights into how gendered discourse is encoded in naming practices within popular media.

Abstract

This study investigates the forms and effects of phonological interference in the recitation of Indonesian poetry by Thai students. Phonological interference occurs when the phonetic system of a speaker's first language (L1) influences the articulation of a second language (L2), in this case, Indonesian. Using a qualitative case study method, this research analyzes audio recordings of Thai students reading the poem "Guru adalah Lampu" and draws on data from semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal several consistent interference patterns, including consonant substitutions, vowel additions, and incorrect stress placement. These patterns significantly impact the rhythmic and aesthetic qualities of the poem, disrupting elements such as rhyme, alliteration, and emotional resonance. Despite these challenges, the study also identifies potential positive contributions of interference, such as the emergence of novel rhythmic structures and cultural inflections. The findings underscore the importance of phonetic training and aesthetic awareness in BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) pedagogy, especially in literature-oriented instruction.

Abstract

This study explores the cultural adaptation experiences of Cambodian international students in West Sumatra, focusing on affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions of culture shock. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected from 14 Cambodian students enrolled at three universities in Padang and Batusangkar. In-depth interviews, observations, focus group discussions (FGDs), and documentation provided a comprehensive view of their adaptation journey. Findings reveal a spectrum of emotional reactions, from enthusiasm to confusion; cognitive dissonance related to religious, culinary, and social norms; and behavioral challenges linked to language and social etiquette. Despite these challenges, students employed various strategies—peer support, cultural observation, language learning—to navigate cultural differences. The study underscores the importance of intercultural communication training and inclusive campus environments to support international student integration in Indonesia

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of asynchronous learning through YouTube on vocabulary acquisition among eleventh-grade students at SMK PN 2 Purworejo, Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative case study design, researchers collected data through pre- and post-tests, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of student engagement with the Vocab App-Learn English Words YouTube channel. Results indicate that integrating asynchronous multimedia content significantly improved students' vocabulary mastery, motivation, and engagement. Initial vocabulary test scores averaged 64, increasing to 76.75 after treatment. The study also found that visual and audio elements enhanced comprehension, memory retention, and speaking confidence. Students reported increased interest in using video-based resources and preferred interactive strategies such as quizzes and group projects. The findings suggest that asynchronous YouTube-based instruction provides a flexible and engaging platform for vocabulary development and recommend its integration into English language learning curricula in similar educational contexts.
