The Journal of Feminism and Gender Studies (JFGS) main objectives are to develop scientific discourse and analysis on issues of gender and feminism. JFGF accommodates articles with both empirical and discursive approaches by providing freedom of scientific development within the framework of feminism and gender perspectives. Articles with empirical and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of feminism and gender are preferable. In keeping with its commitment to distribute and disseminate information on issues of feminism and gender worldwide, as part of the advocacy efforts undertaken by the University of Jember, JFGS provides free and open access to all of his published works. This journal aims to become a forum for dialogue between academics, experts, practitioners, and feminist activists around the world. It also builds and creates new knowledge in favor of justice and equality in a humanitarian framework so that JFGS will later become a platform for discussion and debate as we also accept the plurality of thoughts.

Abstract

The declining birth rate in South Korea has become a crucial issue affecting the country’s demographic balance since the early 2000s. This study analyzes the failure of birth rate policies during President Moon Jae In’s administration using Ted Hopf’s constructivism approach, which emphasizes the role of identity, norms, and social constructions in shaping public policies. the result show that despite the implementation of policies such as financial assistance and the recognition of non-traditional families, their effectiveness remains limited. the dominance of social norms emphasizing the importance of marriage before having children, along with changing social values that encourage younger generations to delay marriage, are key factors hindering policy success. therefore, more responsive policies that adapt to social dan cultural shifts are needed to address the declining birth rate more effectively. This study contributes to understanding the relationship between social norms, cultural identity, and social constructions in public policy formulation in South Korea. it also provides insights for policymakers in addressing demographic challenges in the future.

Abstract

This study focuses on the dynamics of self-image among female artists in the traditional Janger performance group, Sri Budoyo Pangestu (SBP), Banyuwangi, using Erving Goffman's dramaturgical approach. The main objective of the research is to explore how women as Janger performers overcome the social stigma attached to their profession. The study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The findings reveal that the negative stigma toward female Janger artists—particularly the stereotypes of being "vulgar" or "erotic"—has prompted them to develop self-image strategies through the concepts of front stage and back stage. The front stage represents the artists’ efforts to create a positive impression in the eyes of the audience, while the back stage provides a space for them to step away from their artistic roles and live their personal lives. In this context, Lilis, as the leader of the SBP Janger troupe, plays a vital role in upholding ethics and professionalism among group members. The study concludes that the dramaturgical strategies employed by female Janger performers have successfully shaped a positive self-image despite strong societal stigma. This indicates that traditional performing arts can serve as a space for women to demonstrate professionalism and maintain personal dignity.
