Abstract

Some Indonesian archaeologists, however, have focused on the nation's Islamic past. Uka Tjandrasasmita is one of Indonesia's leading archaeologists and is largely behind the writing of Volume III of the Sejarah Nasional Indonesia, the national history that was the "standard text" for the teaching of history in Indonesian schools during the New Order; the volume he worked on dealt with Indonesia's Islamic history. For many years he held the position of the head of the Islamic Antiquities section of the Indonesian Archaeological Service (Bidang Arkeologi Islam, Pusat Penelitian Kepurbakalaan dan Peninggalan Nasional) and carried out survey and excavation work in West, Central and East java. He has published many reports on the Islamic archaeology of Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.530

Abstract

The study of traditional Minangkabau society has stimulated a considerable amount of work on the nature of social change in West Sumatra. In Minangkabau one of the central themes of its intellectual history is the search for the formulation of the relationship between adat and Islam. As a result, some scholarly debated has concentrated on how a matrilineal society, such as Minangkabau, can become one of the most thoroughly Islamized ethnic groups. The survival of adat is under the domination of Islam, although its rules are extremely different from adat, and the integration of Islam with adat.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.531

Abstract

Pattumateang, conducted after the burial service, is conceived as a means through which the living can transfer blessings to the dead. This practice has been the cause for an everlasting debate among Muslims in Cikoang. Some object to the concept of being able to help the dead and call on followers to accept proper Islamic teachings and practices. This article is an illustration of how the Pattumateang ritual, and others like it, can lead to the creation of two opposing groups of Muslims, those for and against such a ritual.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.532

Abstract

Research in various public institutions of higher education in Indonesia, which forms the basis of this article revealed that - especially Islamic - books have been greatly influential in the dissemination process of individual thoughts, especially among campus Islamic activists. The original thought of an individual is influenced by his/her prior experiences, In the modern context, this means, by the most important media: books. Thus, the process of the transmission of ideology among campus Islamic activists is shaped by reference works published by Islamic publishers. It is therefore safe to say that books are the means of transmission for campus Islamic movements in IndonesiaDOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.533

Book Review: M. C. Ricklefs, Mystic Synthesis in lava: A History of Islamization from the Fourteenth to the early Nineteenth Centuries (USA: EastBridge, 2006), xvi + 263.M. C. Ricklefs, Polarising Javanese Society: Islamic and Other Visions (c. 1830-1930) (Singapore: National University of Singapore Press, 2007), xviii + 297.Kedua buku tersebut secara sinambung menjelaskan sejarah Islamisasi Jawa selama enam abad: dari abad 14 sampai abad 20.

Abstract

PPIM's programme intends to strengthen civic values in Indonesia through pesantrens and madrasahs, i.e. through in-service training for two target groups within these institutions of Islamic education (pesantren leaders [kyai/nyai] and teachers of religious subjects) in three locations on Java (West Java (including Banten), Central Java (including Yogyakarta), and East Java). This geographic limitation is in part due to the high concentration of pesantrens and madrasahs on the island, further to the fact that the areas are highly Islamized as indicated by their demands for the implementation of the shari'ah (Islamic law).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.535

Abstract

This article states: "In exercising his/her rights and freedoms, every person shall have the duty to accept the restrictions established by law for the sole purposes of guaranteeing the recognition and respect of the rights and freedoms of others and of satisfying just demands based upon considerations of morality, religious values, security and public order in a democratic society." According to some members of the legislature who are involved in the sessions of constitutional amendment. This article is an important key to understanding the issue of the implementation of human rights in Indonesia. Thus, human rights may be restricted insofar there is a national statute that instructs to do so. This provision could result in a situation where individual citizens fail to enjoy rights relating to religious freedom, since to embrace, or carry out, a particular religious interpretation, which is different to the established practice or to the majority of Muslims' understanding, will be considered heresy, and, hence, becomes unlawful and has no right to surviveDOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i1.536

Abstract

Founded in 1912, Muhammadiyah claims to be the largest puritan-modernist Islamic organisation not only in Indonesia but also in the world, with more than 25 million followers. Originally Muhammadiyah was purely a religious organisation. However, after the declaration of Indonesian independence in1945, particularly after Masy'umi -of which Muhammadiyah was one of its special membership - was transformed into a political party, Muhammadiyah has been involved in Indonesian politics in one way or another. Since it was founded, Muhammadiyah promotes ijtihad as opposed to ijma' as in the case of the Nahdlatul Ulama the largest traditionalist Islamic organization founded in 1926. However, it was after the collapse of New Order regime that Muhammadiyah started to associate its political role by combining its basis of worldview that is ijtihad with political attitudes of its leaders.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i1.537

Abstract

In sociology-or more correctly sociology of religion - there exists a theory which views religion as an economic commodity. That is to say, religion is a commodity which is produced and marketed in a religious market. This theory is known as the supply-side approach. The idea of applying an economic concept to religion has been promoted by many sociologists particularly the likes of Bain-bridge, Finke, Iannaccone, and Stark. This paper examines the application of the supply-side approach, with particular focus on its application in the Indonesian context (with reference to Islam). We will further consider the possibility of the eventuation of a triple market in Indonesia, drawing on a case study of the Eden-Salamullah group.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i1.538

Abstract

The research for this piece was carried out in Embau - one of the sub districts of the region of Kapuas Hulu. Socio - demo graphically, this region is inhabited by n community of Muslims that that continues to grow in numbers. Further to the Muslims, the area is inhabited by considerable numbers of non-Muslim Dayaks and other migrants to the area. What is interesting to note is the process of Islamization of the Dayak community, which has occurred naturally as a result of its intersection with the Muslim community. It was the Malays, who appeared in the area hundreds of years ago, who brought Islam to the area. The introduction of Islam to the area has brought with it a number of changes to the Dayak community in West Kalimantan. Not only did many Dayaks adopt Islam as their religion, they further adopted the culture typical of other Muslims.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i1.539
