Abstract

Among Muslims the term amar makruf nahi mungkar (promoting good and preventing vice) is frequently used as a kind of motto for lslamic dakwah. This term has been studied by a good number of Islamic scholars-both classical and contemporary including Ibn Taymiyah in his work amar makruf nahi mungkar. The Mu'tazilites interpreted it to fall within the category of al-Ushul al-Khamsah, (the five principles of belief). In fact, for the Mu'tazilites the doctrine of amar makruf nahi mungkar is held to be a part of faith, to the point that amar makruf nahi mungkar must be enforced when necessary. Because of this, theological groups in the past have resorted to acts of violence in carrying out their duty of amar makruf nahi mungkar, even though this is done only as a last resort when there are no other means.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i2.550

Abstract

Book Review: Robert w. Hefner and Muhammad Qasim Zaman, schooling Islam: The culture and Politics of Modem Muslim Education (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2007).This book offers a portrait of Islamic education while presenting their struggles with s variety of political systems, modernization, and religious ideology. Cases were studied in important regions in the lslamic world such as Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Morocco, and Mali as well as Islamic education in the West, in this case, England. In the discussion is revealed that the Islamic educational institutions, especially the madrasah are not only confronted by changing social and political realities, but also by the issue: How to make a modern Muslim. In response to these challenges various models of Islamic education appeared in various regions in the Muslim world.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i3.551

Abstract

This book is largely based on the writer's PhD thesis completed at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. This book represents an in-depth study of Laskar Jihad. Laskar Jihad has become somewhat prominent in recent times namely because of its role in the bloody conflict in Ambon. This religious conflict between Christians and Muslims resulted in countless casualties on both sides. The author takes the view that the phenomenon of Laskar Jihad represents a kind of synthesis between Islamic doctrine, militancy and efforts to strengthen the identity of a group that felt sidelined by modernization. Laskar Jihad's involvement in the conflict in Ambon was supported by - amongst others - fatwas from Salafi scholars in the Middle East (Mecca, Medina and Yemen).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i2.552

Abstract

PPIM UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, assisted by PUSKADIA-BUMA UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta has conducted a three year project (2004-2007) of mainstreaming pesantrens and madrasahs in Indonesia. The project initiative and execution were the result of cooperation between UIN Jakarta and the Royal Danish Embassy The project was intended to introduce contemporary, democratic civic values (democracy, civil society, religious pluralism, human rights, and gender equality) into pesantrens and madrasahs and to their leaders, and to initiate participatory and accountable management within these schools. The program was designed to eventually create an atmosphere in which the worldviews of Islamic educational institutions could change and adapt to the diversity and complexity of the modern world.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i3.553

Abstract

The importance of religious courts initially rose with the introduction of Marriage Law no. 1, 1974 which mainly aimed to prevent arbitrary divorces, which was viewed to be a common problem among Muslims at the time. The enactment of this law meant that divorces needed to be approved by the religious court, hence acting as a disincentive for men to divorce their wives at the drop of a hat. The impact of this law is evident: the rate of divorce for Indonesian Muslims declined from 16.7% in 1955 to 1.1% in 1990. The survey looked at a range of issues related to the use of the religious courts across the nation and access to these courts. Hence the survey touched on the background of users, equity, satisfaction, accessibility, knowledge of the religious courts and the services provided, and trust in public institutions.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i2.554

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze how one group, that is, the Justice and Welfare Party (PKS), is attempting to clean up politics from within the political party system. This article argues that the existence of PKS has given a new but unique political nuance to the political party system in post-New Order Indonesia. The seemingly sudden rise of PKS has taken many by surprise, and it is for this that the party has become the topic of much discourse amongst scholars of Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i1.555

Abstract

Law no. 38/1999 on zakat administration was able to be successfully enacted not solely because the roots of democracy had began to grow in the country; but also because this law is based on the rationale purpose of zakat, that is, to help the poor. In this article, furthermore, the state is responsible to protect and provide necessary support for the poor and needy citizens, even though in fact, the state fails to do so, This is of course of great relevance considering the main aim of zakat is to improve the social and economic position of the poor.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.556

Abstract

This article has examined the dynamics of the formation of KPPSI, its emergence and the character of its supporters. It can be concluded that the legacy of DI is clearly observable in the former DI followers - who supported the establishment of the movement. Aziz Kahar Muzakkar is the son of Kahar Muzakkar. However, the DI factor cannot wholly explain the emergence of KPPSI. This discussion has shown that there were many other Islamists in KPPSI who had no DI ties. This attests to the continuing influence of Islamic modernism, including the role of Muhammadiyah educational training in the radicalization of Islamism in the region. Furthermore, young Islamists have begun to be shaped by broader Islamist movements due to their access to global Islam. To some extent, KPPSI also attracted young activists with attitudes of intolerance to others.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i1.557

Abstract

This article examines a Javanese Muslim celebration known as Grebeg Besar, a celebration which maintains cultural heritage, disseminates Islam and raises the regional income of the people of Demak. Demak was established by Raden Fatah.6 According to Babad Tanah Jawa, Raden Fatah was a descendant of the last Majapahit king, Kertabhumi Brawijaya V, from a Chinese prince who was given to his favorite boy, a governor of Palembang, Arya Damar or Joko Dillah. Together with his younger brother, Raden Husen,e Raden Fatah went to Java to devote his life to the King Brawijaya V,10 by joining a ship of a trader. After landing on the coast of Java, these two brothers went their separate ways. Raden Husen continued his journey to Majapahit and became an Adipati of Terung, while Raden Fatah felt reluctant to serve a kafir (infidel) king and preferred to learn Islam under the tutelage of Sunan Ampel.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.558
