Focus The journal aims to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the history and contemporary developments of Islam in Indonesia and Southeast Asia through the publication of scholarly articles and book reviews. Scope STUDIA ISLAMIKA specializes in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular, and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general. Abstract

This article covers the efforts being made by two regions of Indonesia to implement Islamic law, that is, Aceh and West Sumatra. As one of the Special Autonomous Regions in Indonesia, Aceh has far greater freedom and authority to make its own rules and regulations, which includes the use of Islamic law as the rule of law in the area. In order to achieve this objective, the government of Aceh has introduced a regulation regarding the implementation of Islamic law and is quite extensive in that it covers aqidah (Islamic beliefs), ibadah (matters of worship), muamalah (dealings between people), akhlak (character), pendidikan (education), dakwah, baitul mal (the treasury), kemasyarakatan (social matters), syiar Islam (Islamic propogation), pembelaan Islam (defending Islam), peradilan (judicature), jinayat, munakahat (marriage) and waris (inheritance). This means that Islamic law should in theory govern almost all aspects of Islamic law and daily life.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.560

Abstract

This article focuses on the role of the four lslamic reformers during the Iate 19th century and early 20th century. These four scholars include aI-Syaikh Ahmad ibn Muhammad Zayn al-Fathany (1273-1325 H/1865-1908 M); al-Syaikh al-Murabbi Muhammsd Sa'id al-Lanaqi (1292-1355 H/1875-1926 M); Tok Kenali (1287-1352 H/1870-1933 M); and al-Syaikh Thahir JaIal aI-Din al-Falakial-Azhari (1286-1376 H/1869-1956). These four Malay scholars led the reformist push at the same time of the arrival of the colonial powers from Europe. Abstract

This article looks closely at the process of the growth and development of Islam in Malaku, focusing on the role of one of the rulers of Tarnate, Sultan Zainal Abidin, in this process. As the oldest son of the previous ruler, Kolano Marhum, Zainal Abidin was the logical choice to become the 19th Sultan of the Ternate Kingdom; this was bolstered by the fact that he inherited all of his father's good character traits. Zainal Abidin ruled the Kingdom of Ternate from 1468 until1500. The northern area of Maluku (Ternate-Halamahera) is a region which is rich in spices. It was this that brought merchants on masse from the Middle East to Maluku. Further to their business activities, the Arab merchants also carried out dakwah activities.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.562

Abstract

This article provides biography of the great General Soedirman (born 24 January 1916), one of the key figures in the fight for Indonesia's independence. one of the more interesting aspects of this article is how it looks at Soedirman's youth and education in Muhammadiyah circles. It was Muhammadiyah - or Hizbul Wathan, a scouting organization underneath the umbrella of Muhammadiyah, to be precise - that provided the young Soedirman with critical experience and lessons that were aimed at giving Muhammadiyah youth physical and mental training. Furthermore, particularly in the period of the fight for Independence, this training prepared them for becoming deeply involved in the fight for Indonesia's independence.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i1.563

Abstract

Book Review: Ahmad Baso, NU Studies: Pergolakan Pemikiran antara Fundamentalisme Islam dan Fundamentalisme Neo-Liberal (Jakarta: Erlangga, 2006), 510 halaman + xxi.Although this book is entitled NU Studies, which gives one the impression that it constitutes an academic study about the ideological developments within NU, it is in fact more so an effort on the part of the author to advocate and strengthen his own position and opinions against those who hold opposing ideas, be they within NU or outside of the organization. As a result of this aim, it's not surprising that many contradictions and inconsistencies have made their way into the book. This is mainly because the author has employed a strategy of rejecting ideas from his opposition, often without basis, whilst promoting his own views which he considers to be appropriate with the ideology of Ahlussunnah Waljamaah as held by NU.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i3.564

Abstract

In mid-October this year (17 October 2006), the University Senate at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta was convened with the task of electing a new rector for the University. The meeting, presided over by the outgoing rector Dr. Azyumardi Azra, was attended by eighty members of the University Senate. This number comprised of lecturers, assistant lecturers, and department head. Those in attendance included Dr. A. Malik Fajar (former Minister for Education), Dr. Din Syamsuddin (Head of Muhammadiyah), Professor M. Atho Mudzhar (Head of the Research and Development at the Department of Religion), Dr. Husni Rahim (Secretary of the National Higher Education Accreditation Board), and one of the leaders of MUI, Dr. Huzaemah Tahido. Abstract

This study seeks to explain the reasons behind people's participation in the Tarbiyah Movement in Indonesia. Although this movement has had phenomenal political and social achievements, it appears to be exclusive in the sense that it is dominated by a certain type of Indonesian Muslim. That is, as observed by the likes of Bahtiar Effendy, the core participants of the Tarbiyah Movement tend to be Muslims who are young and well-educated. This does not mean, however, that all those who fit this description join the Tarbiyah Movement. In fact, there are many of those with the same characteristics who not only do not participate in the movement but even oppose of it.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i2.566

Abstract

Three main points will be elaborated on in the following discussion. Firstly, the author would like to explain the chronology of the conflicts and at the same time reveal their intractable nature. Secondly, the author will analyze the cause of the conflict in terms of the security dilemma: whether the conflicts were triggered by real or assumed causes? Thirdly, the author will address the specific "Islamic" factor of the conflicts, which was denied by Southeast Asian governments as being among the features of the conflicts, and propose a more appropriate approach to it in order to reduce the intractability of the conflicts.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i2.567

Abstract

This article, particularly the discussion on pesantrens, shows that only tariqa which supports fiqh is acceptable to and practiced by kiai and santri. This contradicts Trimingham's argument that Indonesians prefer heterodox mysticism. Comparing Muslims in Africa and Indonesia, Trimingham argues that Muslims in Indonesia place more emphasis on "thinking than upon acting" and therefore "speculative mysticism" is prevalent in this countryDOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i2.568

Abstract

Intellectual Muslims generally began to attain prominence in the early 20th century, in line with the growing modernization of the Islamic world. During this period, the Islamic world faced colonialism and imperialism which had unthought-of of implications for the wider Muslim community. The struggle against colonialism sparked debate about jihad with a more varied and complex meaning. The cultural struggle that took place between Islam and the West gave rise to a "cultural exchange" that not only resulted in the rise of the social class that we now refer to as intellectual Muslims, but also created a new-found sense of enthusiasm and passion for debating lslamic doctrine and issues in the context of modern values.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i2.569
