Abstract

Women's involvement in the public sphere is still an issue that requires in-depth study, especially related to women's abilities to become a community leader. This view is considered to have the legitimacy of the Qur'an, so it is necessary to look again at the view of the mufassir as the holder of authority in the study of the verses of the Qur'an. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze the thoughts of 'Izz al-Din bin Abdi Salam regarding women's leadership. The issue of women's leadership has always been a growing study and not a few that make it a central issue in political battles. To achieve this goal, the author of this article uses a qualitative method, namely library research. The source of the data is taken from a book written by 'Izz al-Din with the title al-Qawā'id al-Kubrā (Qawā'id al-Ahkām fī Ishlāh al-Anām. The data was analyzed using the content analysis method. The findings in this article reveal that with the concept of maslahat offered by 'Izz al-Din, gender is not the main requirement to become a leader but what is most important is one's capacity and integrity as well as the ability to uphold leadership principles such as justice. The above results can be a scientific basis for women, both for policymakers and the general public regarding their involvement in the public sphere.

Abstract

The phenomenon of hadith rejection (Inkar al-Sunnah) promoted by the Quranism movement poses a serious challenge to the authenticity of Islamic teachings in the contemporary era. This study aims to examine the historical roots, key figures, and ideological structures shaping the worldview of Quranism, while offering a critique of its theological and epistemological implications. Employing a qualitative method with a literature review approach, the research analyzes the works of prominent figures such as Muhammad Tawfiq Sidqi, Rashad Khalifa, and Edip Yuksel, and applies Ziauddin Sardar’s framework of ideological critique. The findings reveal that the rejection of hadith is not merely a methodological error, but also threatens the epistemological foundations of Islam, undermines the authority of scholars, eliminates the principle of ijma‘ (consensus), and triggers interpretive relativism that could potentially divide the Muslim community. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on critiquing Quranism as an ideological movement rather than merely engaging in normative debate, thereby enriching the discourse on strategies to strengthen Islamic scholarly methodology. The implications of this research are expected to serve as a foundation for policymakers, educational institutions, and religious authorities in formulating preventive measures to counter the spread of ideas that may weaken the authority of Islamic sources.

Abstract

The issue of human freedom is a significant topic in contemporary discourse, particularly in the intersection between Western values and Islamic teachings. This study aims to examine the concept of human freedom according to Wahbah az-Zuhaili in Tafsir al-Munir and to evaluate its relevance to Western humanist thought, which emphasizes absolute individual liberty. Using a qualitative method with a library research approach, data were obtained from Tafsir al-Munir as the primary source and Western philosophical literature as secondary sources. The findings reveal that Wahbah offers a balanced concept of freedom, acknowledging the human capacity to choose while limiting it within the framework of moral responsibility and divine law. Analysis of verses such as QS. Al-Kahfi [18]:29, QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:256, and QS. An-Najm [53]:39 demonstrates that Islam views freedom as a means toward conscious submission to the truth, rather than liberation from God’s laws. The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive comparison between contemporary Islamic exegesis and secular humanism, producing an alternative framework to address the modern crisis of freedom. The implication is that this study affirms Islam’s position as a source of values capable of guiding human freedom ethically, spiritually, and socially in facing global challenges.
