The crossword puzzle method is utilized to enhance English vocabulary proficiency among employees of a local financial agency named LPD (Lembaga Perkreditan Rakyat) which is located at Guwang Village, Gianyar Regency. This research adopts a qualitative approach combined with a case study model and a pre-experimental design to assess the method’s effectiveness. 15 employees with diverse educational backgrounds, ranging from high school (SMA), vocational school (SMK), diploma, to bachelor’s degree are participated in this research. This research applied crossword puzzle set as the instrument which contained of 20 English financial glossaries. The data collection was conducted through the distribution of questionnaires and preliminary interviews to assess the employees’ understanding of banking terminology in English before and after the training. Data analysis was performed using an interactive model that includes three main stages: data collection, data analysis, and conclusions. The results showed that the crossword puzzle method is fruitful in enhancing employees’ interest in actively learning English vocabulary. Furthermore, the method also expanding their confidence in using English, especially in the context of banking terminology. The evaluation results revealed that 4 employees (27%) only mastered fewer than 10 vocabulary items after the training (Category A), 5 employees (33%) mastered between 10 to 15 vocabulary items (Category B), and 6 employees (40%) successfully mastered more than 15 vocabulary items (Category C). These findings indicate a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, although there are still differences in the level of proficiency among the participants. Overall, this method has a positive impact on employees’ English vocabulary mastery, particularly in banking terms, and has the potential to be applied more widely in other workplace settings.

Abstract

This research examines gender resistance in the film Enola Holmes through Sara Mills' critical discourse approach. The study focuses on how the film's narrative challenges gender stereotypes by portraying a strong, independent female lead in an adventure story that defies typical gender expectations in popular media. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study applies Mills' framework to analyze language and narrative elements that shape Enola’s character. Concepts like subject positioning, objectification, and audience reception are explored to demonstrate how Enola challenges traditional gender roles. The analysis reveals implicit critiques of gender inequality, especially in political and social contexts within the film’s narrative. Enola’s portrayal as an active agent of change, intelligence, and empowerment is central, encouraging viewers to reconsider traditional gender roles and advocate for equality. Her journey of self-understanding prompts viewers to reevaluate their own perceptions of gender roles. These findings highlight the film’s role in promoting gender equality and social change, offering insights into how such narratives can influence societal perceptions. This study expands discussions on gender representation in media, emphasizing the significance of empowering female characters in reshaping cultural conversations around gender roles and empowerment.

Abstract

"Green Book," directed by Peter Farrelly, depicts the evolving relationship between Dr. Don Shirley, an African-American pianist, and Tony "Lip" Vallelonga, an Italian-American bouncer, during a 1960s concert tour in the American South. This study employs Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to examine how the film conveys complex social messages about race, identity, and friendship. Utilizing theories by Halliday & Matthiessen (2013, Kress & van Leeuwen (2020), and (O’Halloran, 2011), the research focuses on 23 key scenes set in a Cadillac. The study addresses three main questions: What messages are conveyed in "Green Book"? How are these meanings realized? Why are these meanings realized in their specific social context? Findings reveal significant messages about the struggles and resilience of African Americans, realized through linguistic and visual elements. The confined space of the Cadillac symbolizes broader societal issues, emphasizing personal and cultural conflicts. This research contributes to understanding multimodal discourse analysis in film studies and provides insights for filmmakers, educators, and media analysts. "Green Book" demonstrates the power of film as a medium for social commentary and cultural reflection

Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a crucial role in making conversations clear and smooth, but their function in stand-up comedy remains underexplored. While previous research has examined DMs in speeches and films, little attention has been given to their use in comedy. This study focuses on cognitive DMs, which reflect thinking processes, elaboration, or self-correction, and analyzes their use in Matt Rife’s stand-up routine. Unlike other DMs, cognitive DMs convey the speaker’s mental state, guide the audience’s comprehension, and signal self-monitoring, all of which are integral to the comedic performance. The descriptive qualitative method was used to examine a popular 2023 stand-up special, focusing on how Rife uses these markers to structure his jokes and connect with the audience. This study found 151 cognitive DMs, categorized into four types: elaboration such as “like”, thinking processes like “um”, Assessment of the listener’s knowledge about utterances like “you know what I mean”, and self-correction “I mean”. The most frequently used marker was “like,” primarily serving the function of elaboration. The study shows that cognitive DMs help with timing, clarifying jokes, and engaging the audience. This research sheds light on how DMs are used in comedy and suggests that further study could improve our understanding of their role in making humor effective and engaging.

Abstract

English has distinctive characteristics that may differ from those of a student’s native language, and it is essential to grasp the differences. That is why it is crucial for students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to understand the nuances of English pronunciation because a mispronunciation of a word may result in a lack of comprehension. The objective of this study is to identify the mispronunciation made by students in their pursuit of fluency in English. It employed a descriptive qualitative approach. In order to collect the data, the EFL students were required to read ten prepared English sentences, which had been selected according to the topic that they had been learning. In this study, Davies' theory was used as a reference, particularly in relation to English phonemes. The results demonstrated that there were pronunciation errors in six vowel sounds, three diphthongs, and six consonant sounds. When pronouncing a word in a sentence, EFL students tend to be influenced by their first language. Therefore, the acquisition of knowledge regarding the phonemic differences inherent to the English language will have a beneficial effect on the advancement of the language skills of students engaged in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) studies.

Abstract

Accurate subtitle translation is essential in films, as it influences viewers' comprehension and connection with cultural nuances. This study addresses the challenges in automated subtitle translation, focusing on translation errors in idiomatic expressions, abbreviations, slang, onomatopoeia, and address terms. This research addresses a gap in the field by directly comparing the two automated translation tools using Koponen's (2010) error classification theory, highlighting their limitations in handling idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances, thereby providing insights necessary for enhancing automated translation algorithms. The methodology applied is descriptive qualitative. This study evaluates and compares translation errors in subtitles generated by YouTube Automated Translation and DeepL for F The Prom movie, highlighting that both systems have significant limitations in accurately translating idiomatic expressions, slang, and cultural nuances. YouTube often misses culturally specific terms, while DeepL struggles with idioms and slang, indicating a critical need to enhance translation algorithms to improve accuracy and the viewing experience, particularly for non-native speakers.
