Abstract

This study aims to analyze production risks faced by layer chicken farmers in Dadakitan Village, Baolan District, Tolitoli Regency, as well as the strategies implemented to overcome them. The research employed a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The research informant was the owner of a layer chicken farm with a population of 7,000 birds producing an average of 3,000 eggs per day. The results revealed that the main risks in layer farming include human resources (HR), climate change, diseases, chicken mortality, environmental issues, and feed price fluctuations. These risks directly impact productivity decline and business sustainability. Strategies applied by farmers to mitigate these risks include developing standard operating procedures (SOP), conducting technical training, improving farm management, implementing biosecurity measures, administering vaccines and vitamins, maintaining environmental hygiene, and adjusting feed formulations with local ingredients. In conclusion, risk identification and the application of appropriate mitigation strategies can help farmers maintain productivity and ensure the sustainability of layer chicken farming in the study area.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the reproductive performance of Kacang does raised by smallholder farmers in Galang District, Tolitoli Regency. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method through field observations and structured interviews with 44 farmers representing a total of 332 Kacang goats. The observed variables included age at first mating, postpartum mating interval, kidding interval, litter size, and pre-weaning mortality. Data were analyzed descriptively by calculating the mean, frequency, and percentage for each parameter and were compared with previous studies. The results showed that the average age at first mating ranged from 6 to 12 months, postpartum mating interval was 2–4 months, kidding interval was 7–9 months, litter size was 1–2 kids per birth, and pre-weaning mortality was 9.09%. These findings indicate that Kacang does in Galang District exhibit good reproductive efficiency and adaptability to tropical conditions. The main contributing factors are the availability of natural forage throughout the year, farmers’ experience, and stable traditional management practices. However, the low educational level of farmers and the lack of reproductive record-keeping remain limiting factors that need to be addressed through improved management and targeted extension programs

Abstract

This study aims to determine the public perception of the impact of Bali cattle farm waste, focusing on aspects of odor and environmental cleanliness. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with a field survey approach, involving 50 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and direct interviews, then analyzed using a five-point Likert scale to assess the level of community disturbance caused by livestock waste. The results showed that the community experienced a high level of disturbance from the presence of Bali cattle waste. The total perception score reached 901, consisting of 448 for the odor sub-variable and 453 for the cleanliness sub-variable. This indicates that the community felt highly disturbed by the impact of livestock waste, particularly due to the strong, persistent odor and scattered cow dung in residential areas. The unpleasant odor was generated from the decomposition of organic materials in cattle feces and urine, which produced gases such as ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Inadequate waste management also led to a decline in environmental cleanliness and an increase in fly populations. These findings confirm that improper management of Bali cattle farm waste has a significant negative impact on community comfort and environmental quality in the surrounding areas.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of chicken manure fertilizer doses on the growth and yield of setaria grass (Setaria splendida) at different defoliation ages. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with four treatments of chicken manure doses, namely P0 (without fertilizer), P1 (3 kg/plot), P2 (6 kg/plot), and P3 (9 kg/plot), each with three replications. The observed parameters included plant height and fresh weight at defoliation ages of 60, 70, and 80 days, analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test when significant differences were found. The results showed that chicken manure fertilizer had no significant effect (P>0.05) on plant height or fresh weight at all defoliation ages. However, the application of 6 kg/plot (P2) tended to produce better growth and yield, particularly at the first defoliation (60 days). At 70 and 80 days, the effect of fertilizer decreased as the plants entered the generative phase. These findings indicate that the response to organic fertilizer is more optimal during the early vegetative phase, while its influence declines with increasing plant age. Therefore, a moderate dose of chicken manure can be recommended to enhance the vegetative growth of setaria grass while maintaining efficient use of organic fertilizers.

Abstract

Chicken eggs are a highly nutritious food, but they are prone to quality deterioration during storage due to physical and chemical changes. One effort to extend their shelf life is by using natural coating materials such as Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of VCO coating on the internal quality of chicken eggs during storage at room temperature. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with seven treatments and four replications, resulting in 28 experimental units. The treatments consisted of fresh eggs (control), uncoated eggs stored for 7, 14, and 21 days, and VCO-coated eggs stored for the same periods. The observed variables included Haugh Unit, egg weight, air cell size, albumen index, and yolk index. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and significant differences among treatments were further tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that VCO coating significantly preserved the internal quality of eggs compared to uncoated eggs. Eggs treated with VCO had higher Haugh Unit values, albumen and yolk indices, and experienced lower weight loss and air cell enlargement during storage. It can be concluded that coating eggs with VCO is a simple and effective method to maintain the quality of chicken eggs during storage at room temperature.

Abstract

Goats have good adaptability to tropical environments; however, scientific information regarding the reproductive performance and mortality rate of local goats under smallholder farming systems remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the reproductive characteristics and mortality of local goats raised in smallholder plantation systems. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with a survey approach. Data were collected through field observations, structured interviews with farmers, and recording of biological parameters of the animals. Data analysis was carried out descriptively by calculating means, standard deviations, and percentages, which were then compared with relevant literature. The results showed that local goats in Kayu Lompa Village had an average age at first estrus of 6.45 months, age at first mating of 7.18 months, and age at first kidding of 13.18 months. The average gestation length was 5.64 months with a kidding interval of 6.73 months. The average litter size was 2.00 kids per kidding with a birth weight of 1.045 kg, while the average weaning age was 4 months. The sex ratio of kids born was 1:2 (male:female). The mortality rate of kids was 2.44% and adult does 3.40%, which are considered low compared to previous reports. This study provides empirical data on the reproductive performance and mortality of local goats under smallholder plantation systems, which can serve as a basis for improving herd management, enhancing productivity, and supporting the development of local goat genetic resources in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of garlic soaking duration on the organoleptic quality of salted duck eggs. Garlic (Allium sativum L.) contains bioactive compounds such as allicin, diallyl disulfide, and phenolic compounds that act as natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents, thereby potentially improving the sensory quality of salted eggs. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four soaking duration treatments: P0 (without garlic soaking), P1 (10 days), P2 (15 days), and P3 (20 days), each with three replications. A total of 60 duck eggs were used in this study. The soaking solution was prepared from a mixture of water, salt, and garlic, with the garlic amounting to 20% of the salt weight. After soaking, the eggs were steamed for 30 minutes and then subjected to organoleptic testing by 15 semi-trained panelists on four sensory parameters—color, aroma, texture, and taste—using a 1–5 hedonic scale. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) when significant differences were observed (P<0.05). The results showed that the duration of garlic soaking had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on all organoleptic parameters. Panelists’ preference scores decreased with increasing soaking duration. Treatments P1 (10 days) and P2 (15 days) produced sensory scores that were still well accepted by the panelists, whereas P3 (20 days) resulted in a significant decline in color, aroma, and texture. It can be concluded that garlic soaking duration significantly affects the organoleptic quality of salted duck eggs, with an optimal duration of 10–15 days to achieve the best sensory characteristics.
