Artsedes draws its contributions from academics and practitioner-researchers at the interface of new visual and performing arts. It acts as a forum for critical scholarship, innovative practice, and creative pedagogy, addressing themes that may be domain-specific (e.g. Visual Arts, Design, Animation, theatre, dance, music, live art) or situated at the convergence of two or more disciplines. The journal invites original, significant, and rigorous inquiry into all subjects within or across disciplines related to visual and performing arts. It encourages debate and cross-disciplinary exchange across a broad range of approaches. The spectrum of topics includes Animation, Fine Arts, Photography, Music Education, Dance Theatre, Movie and Television, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Media Arts. These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books and live/media-based visual and performing arts. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.

Abstract

This study is entitled “The Coach’s Strategies in Developing Vocal Quality of the Eklesia Choir Members at Medan State University”. The purpose of this study is to describe the strategies implemented by the coach in developing the vocal quality of the Eklesia Choir members at Medan State University. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the coach and choir members. The results show that the trainer implements structured and gradual training strategies in the vocal coaching process of the choir members. These strategies include providing basic understanding of choir singing and voice classification, as well as training in fundamental vocal techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, body posture, articulation, phrasing, resonance, and song interpretation. In addition, the trainer consistently applies vocalizing or vocal warm-ups with various exercises such as humming, lip trill, tongue trill, interval training, and articulation exercises using vowel sounds. During the training process, the trainer also applies demonstration, drill, and imitation methods to help members understand and practice vocal techniques directly. These training strategies not only improve the members singing techniques but also develop musicality, harmonic balance and cooperation among choir members. Therefore, the trainer’s strategies play an important role in systematically and sustainably developing the vocal quality of choir members.

Abstract

Vernacular architecture is a form of collective cultural knowledge born from the relationship between humans, the environment, and local value systems. In Tanaberu, Bontobahari District, Bulukumba Regency, this heritage is embodied in traditional coastal settlement landscapes and the Pinisi boat-building tradition recognized by UNESCO. However, modernization, shifting lifestyles, and the disruption of intergenerational knowledge transmission pose serious threats to its continuity. This study aims to examine the visual heritage quality of vernacular architecture in Tanaberu as an object of cultural advancement through a measured drawing documentation approach and an exploration of coastal community cultural values. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through field research, with data collected via direct observation, in-depth interviews, visual documentation, and building measurement, alongside purposive sampling for object selection. Findings reveal that Tanaberu's vernacular architecture possesses strong visual heritage characteristics, reflected in its stilt-house forms, use of local timber materials, and building orientation adapted to the coastal environment. Beyond physical attributes, traditional buildings also embody social, cultural, and spiritual values that remain alive in community practices. Measured drawing documentation proved effective as a conservation medium, capable of capturing spatial details and cultural values comprehensively. This research affirms the need for a holistic preservation approach encompassing physical conservation, strengthened visual documentation, cultural education, and local community engagement as part of the effort to advance Bulukumba's cultural heritage.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji karya kriya logam Munarai karya Wahyu Putra Pratama melalui pendekatan kritik seni untuk mengungkap aspek visual, makna simbolik, serta posisi karya dalam perkembangan kriya logam kontemporer. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan kritik seni Edmund Feldman yang meliputi tahapan deskripsi, analisis formal, interpretasi, dan evaluasi. Data diperoleh melalui pengamatan visual karya, studi pustaka, serta analisis kontekstual terhadap latar budaya yang melatarbelakangi penciptaan karya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa karya Munarai merupakan karya kriya logam tiga dimensi berbentuk lampu hias yang mengangkat nilai budaya masyarakat Kerinci melalui visualisasi Tari Rangguk, Tari Iyo-Iyo, dan Tari Sembah Anak Batino. Analisis formal memperlihatkan pengolahan unsur garis, bentuk, tekstur, cahaya, serta komposisi tripartit yang membangun keseimbangan visual dinamis. Interpretasi semiotik menggunakan teori Charles Sanders Peirce dan Roland Barthes menunjukkan bahwa karya berfungsi sebagai sistem tanda yang memuat makna ikon, indeks, dan simbol terkait ritual Kenduri Sko serta nilai spiritual masyarakat Kerinci. Evaluasi komparatif dengan karya kriya logam lain menegaskan bahwa Munarai memiliki kekuatan pada narasi budaya, simbolisme sosial, dan integrasi fungsi estetis dengan nilai tradisi lokal. Temuan penelitian menegaskan bahwa kriya logam tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai objek dekoratif, tetapi juga sebagai medium representasi identitas budaya dan artikulasi nilai sosial melalui bahasa visual kontemporer.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang salah satu koreografer perempuan Minangkabau Deslenda yang produktif dan inovatif dalam menciptakan sebuah karya. Melalui analisis proses kreatif, hasil karya serta kiprah professional Deslenda, penelitian ini terfokus dengan bagaimana Deslenda mampu mengembangkan ruang ekspresi khususnya bagi penari maupun koreografer perempuan di Minangkabau. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif yang bersifat deskriptif analisis dengan cara melihat kreativitas dalam karya tari Deslenda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa gaya koreografi Deslenda yang menggabungkan tradisi Minangkabau dengan pendekatan kontemporer telah menghasilkan karya yang kuat secara estetis, sarat makna sosial, serta mampu beradaptasi mengikuti perkembangan zaman. Melalui komunitas tari Galang, Deslenda tidak hanya berperan sebagai koreografer saja, tetapi juga sebagai mentor sekaligus pemimpin komunitas seni Tari Galang. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Deslenda merupakan representasi salah satu koreografer perempuan Minangkabau modern yang mampu merubah persepsi terhadap perempuan Minangkabau di publik seni.

Abstract

Pertumbuhan platform e-commerce di Indonesia telah mendorong jutaan UMKM berbasis budaya lokal untuk mengomunikasikan identitasnya melalui kemasan produk digital. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis bagaimana identitas budaya lokal direpresentasikan secara visual dalam kemasan produk UMKM yang dipasarkan melalui platform e-commerce, serta memetakan posisi representasi tersebut dalam spektrum autentisitas hingga komodifikasi. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah kualitatif kritis dengan semiotika sosial visual Kress dan van Leeuwen sebagai kerangka analisis utama, diperkuat oleh teori representasi Hall dan konsep komodifikasi budaya. Objek penelitian mencakup tiga produk UMKM yang beredar di Shopee, yaitu ikat kepala Beke' dari Toraja (TORAJAKU), minyak herbal dari Bali (Taru Bali Nature), dan sambal roa dari Manado (Ratu Rica). Data dikumpulkan melalui dokumentasi visual listing produk di platform Shopee dan dianalisis secara berlapis, mencakup pembacaan elemen visual, semiotis, hingga penempatan produk pada spektrum analitis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketiga produk menempati posisi berbeda dalam spektrum tersebut: Beke' TORAJAKU berada pada posisi autentik adaptif karena identitas kulturalnya melekat langsung pada materialitas tenunnya; Taru Bali Nature berada di zona hibrid yang menggunakan ikonografi Bali yang sah namun telah tereduksi menjadi bahasa pemasaran wellness global; sementara Ratu Rica menyimpan identitas kultural Manado hanya dalam lapisan verbal tanpa penanda visual yang kuat. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa kedekatan dengan autentisitas berkorelasi dengan sifat produk sebagai artefak budaya, kematangan ekosistem desainer lokal, serta kesadaran produsen bahwa narasi kultural merupakan nilai kompetitif yang tidak dapat sekadar ditempelkan pada permukaan kemasan.
