Abstract

This study examines how economic development and its social impacts are perceived across different socio-economic groups in Palu, Central Sulawesi, a post-disaster urban context. It aims to assess whether economic growth promotes inclusive development or reinforces inequality. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted with 150 respondents selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires with a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation, and regression techniques to evaluate relationships between socio-economic status and development perceptions. The findings show that economic development is generally perceived positively, particularly in infrastructure and employment. However, significant disparities exist across income groups, with higher-income respondents reporting more favorable perceptions. The results also indicate moderate levels of perceived inequality and declining social cohesion, especially among lower-income groups. Regression analysis confirms that income and education significantly influence perceptions, while economic development is negatively associated with social cohesion. Economic development supports recovery but may exacerbate inequality without inclusive policies and social integration strategies.

A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with 25 participants, including smallholder farmers, plantation workers, community leaders, and local government representatives. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns in community responses. Economic considerations were found to dominate perceptions, with most participants prioritizing tangible benefits such as income and employment. In addition, limited participation in decision-making processes contributed to skepticism and reduced trust in the program. The study concludes that the effectiveness of carbon emission reduction programs depends not only on technical design but also on community engagement, equitable benefit distribution, and context-sensitive communication strategies.

The study also shows that although higher income groups are more likely to embrace economic development than negative its lower income groups experience social vices, inequality and rejection of modernity. Furthermore, the loss of the traditional value system and decline of solidarity, which both pale in comparison to the changes that the urbanization of Palu has brought to the participants in the field of study, are mentioned. The study helps to fill the gap in the literature on how various social groups are affected by economic development of mid-size cities and contributes to the international understanding of issues of urban development. That is why, according to the study, without liberationist policies, the process of economic growth only intensifies divisions within society and deepens existing fissures. These findings have policy implications for the policy makers who wish to foster balanced and inclusive development in such urban environments.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the key barriers affecting access to educational facilities in Moyo Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, and to provide an integrated understanding of how these challenges influence educational inequality in remote island contexts.A qualitative case study approach was employed using semi-structured interviews with 30 participants, including parents, teachers, and community leaders. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify major patterns and relationships among barriers. The findings reveal four primary barriers: geographical constraints, infrastructural deficiencies, economic limitations, and teacher shortages. These factors operate in an interconnected manner, where geographic isolation reduces school attendance, poor infrastructure creates unfavorable learning environments, economic pressures increase dropout risks, and teacher shortages lower educational quality. The study demonstrates that educational access in remote areas is shaped by a systemic interaction of multiple barriers. Therefore, integrated and multi-sectoral policy interventions are required to improve equitable access to education in rural and isolated communities.

Abstract

mitigation projects in the coastal villages of Dumai, Riau Province, Indonesia, with a focus on how social, cultural, and economic factors influence participation and perceived effectiveness. A qualitative approach was employed using semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations involving 25 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and relationships. The findings reveal that while structural mitigation measures, such as embankments and drainage systems, have reduced flood intensity, their long-term effectiveness is constrained by inadequate maintenance, unequal distribution of benefits, and limited community involvement. Community participation emerges as a critical mediating factor that shapes both the sustainability and acceptance of mitigation efforts. Furthermore, social cohesion, cultural compatibility, and economic capacity significantly influence how communities engage with and evaluate these projects. The study contributes to the literature by proposing an integrated conceptual framework that links contextual factors, participation, and perceived effectiveness in a coastal setting. The results suggest that flood mitigation strategies should adopt a more inclusive, culturally sensitive, and economically sustainable approach to enhance resilience in vulnerable coastal communities.
